Though it's semi out-of-date, and mostly irrelevant, since the Gold Collection is over...but the Platinum Editions are all far and away better than the Gold Collection discs.

As far as Disney's animated films go, there are the Platinums and now Disney's new line of 2-Disc Special Editions, which they appear to be calling "Masterpiece Editions". At this point, it's kind of silly to get hung up on the naming, since even Disney can't decide what's what anymore - the Sleeping Beauty "Special Edition" is considered a Platinum Edition.

Some of them will. For example Disney announced that Alice in Wonderland and Pochahontas are going to become 2-disc (masterpiece) editions. Previously those two were released in the Gold Collection line. It's not known what others (if any) from the Gold Collection will be released as 2-disc sets in the future.

Originally, Disney's 10 most popular/best selling/whatever films were to be 2-disc Platinum editions and everything else (that wasn't a new release) a skimpy 1-disc Gold Classic. Eventually the Gold Classics line died out, and every animated classic (minus Aladdin, Cinderella, and Bambi) is now available on DVD. So now what Disney is doing is revisiting some of their already-released Gold Classic titles as 2-disc Masterpiece Editions that aren't much different from the Platinums. So here's the gist of it all:

Platinums:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Pinocchio (newly added)
Fantasia (newly added)
Bambi
Cinderella
Peter Pan (newly added)
Lady and the Tramp
Sleeping Beauty (newly added, the September Special Edition does not count as Platinum despite similarities)
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
The Lion King

Masterpiece/Special/Collector's Editions:
Fantasia
Alice in Wonderland
Sleeping Beauty
Pocahontas
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (rumored)
Mulan (rumored)
Tarzan
Fantasia 2000
The Emperor's New Groove
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Lilo and Stitch

Everything else is either a Gold Classic like Hercules or has no real banner like Treasure Planet. Hope this helps.

The initial collection was known as "Limited Issue" not "Limited Edition"

And what an eloquently written history of the Disney DVD!!! Excellent Luke or whomever wrote it! :D

the Gold Collection is probably worst than the Limited Isuue DVDs. The Platinum Editions and the Masterpiece Editions give new meaning to DVDs.
