Modern Marvels: Walt Disney World - DVD Information

Post by Luke »

Modern Marvels: Disney World

Clandestine land grabs. A maze of hidden tunnels. High-ranking Army and Navy officers. Secret technology, known only to a handful of carefully chosen insiders. Cloaked in secrecy for years, the project began as one of the world's biggest, most ambitious, and little-known undertakings. Military research installation? No, Walt Disney World. Orlando's Walt Disney World is not only the most visited theme park in the world, it's also the most technologically advanced. From a network of underground tunnels connecting the various regions of the park, to the space-age propulsion technology called linear synchronous motors, Disney has been at the leading edge of theme park technology since it invented the theme park with the opening of Disneyland in 1954. Soaring castles, sleek monorails, life-like animatronics, Modern Marvels: Walt Disney World takes viewers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the ingenious technology and incredible engineering feats that went into building the 27,000 acre complex.

DVD Features: Interactive Menus; Scene Selection / A & E Home Video / 100 Minutes / Suggested Retail Price: $24.95

Thanks for posting this here, Luke.

There was a discussion going on over in the Theme Parks forum, but because there is only a handful of people who go there regularly, it is good to see some kind of "official" listing.

Also good to see that it is "double" the length of the regular Modern Marvels episodes, but without too much of a price increase (only $16.99 at Amazon)!

Look forward to seeing this, and I hope that the eventual Secret, Stories of Disneyland DVD will be in a similar vein to this one (i.e. informative and entertaining in the History Channel mould).

I also recommend Modern Marvels: Rollercoasters: Search for Ultimate Thrill , as it deals with Disneyland and the development of the first steel rollercoasters. Unfortunately, this is an A & E exclusive and they don't seem to ship outside the US. I guess I will also have to wait until March for the WDW DVD. (I also save $8 )

I'm so excited for this DVD!!! I had no idea that something like this was coming out. :)

Looks like I'll be waiting until March to save some $$ though!

If you want the A&E Disneyworld DVD for $19.95, not $25.

It will give you 20% off. Yes, it'll still be a few dollars cheaper at Amazon six weeks later. But you will get the earlier release date--if that matters to you. Also, for me, I picked up that rollercoaster DVD, which I assume includes Arrow Designs information on the Matterhorn. That's NOT available anywhere else. I also picked up one other DVD.

I do not know how long that coupon is good for. So use it quickly. It was supposed to have expired in December. But it worked fine today--Jan. 4.

I finally got around to watching Modern Marvels: Disney World (I recorded it on my dvr when it aired).
It was facinating to watch. I learned a lot about the parks from the episode. I liked it so much, that I
just preodered it from Amazon using Luke's link.

Has anyone heard about this? It's released on March 28 and I'm definitely thinking about getting it since it's a hardy 100 minutes. Not too bad, the pre-order price is $16.99. And since it's hard to get anything Disney makes on themselves with the Treasures series that goes out-of-print so fast - it would be a good idea to get this DVD. Has anyone seen this special? I've only heard good things about it.

It certainly is really good! It was on as a two-hour Modern Marvels special last Christmas... I made a topic about it here at the time. :)

I have this on pre-order from Amazon. I've never actually seen the special myself, but I know History Channel produces quality documentaries. I've really liked the WDW specials shown on the Travel Channel. I assume this one is better? Either way, for 17 bucks, it's still worth a purchase even it's mediocre (which I know it won't be).

Thanks for the info Luke. I had no idea this was being released.

This was a wonderful show. It aired again a couple of nights ago. I just preordered it for Amazon. The price it very reasonable.

Anyone know if these Modern Marvel releases are available in regular stores? I've never seen any before but maybe was just missing them. If not, I guess I could just preorder from amazon as it's not that expensive.

I'd like to use my Target gift card for BB reward zone card if it will be in regular stores though!! :)

And I'd like to add that I'm SO EXCITED for this release!!! :pink:

Knowing the limited supply that most Targets have, I doubt it would be carried there. You have a better chance at Best Buy or Circuit City (and other Modern Marvels are carried at BestBuy.com), but it's a small studio release, so I wouldn't guarantee on it being there on release date, for instance. Aaron's splendid review of this disc should be up by the end of today.

That was an excellent review, and the new cover art's gorgeous (I hope that's the one my DVD comes with). I like how Aaron tackled the Travel Channel/History Channel comparison I had been wondering about earlier in this thread. I really want the Travel Channel specials to come to DVD because each park had its own 40-minute special. Because of the general focus of the History Channel one, each park only gets 20 minutes in it. Still, I know I'm going to love it.

Anyone see the Moderm Marvels episode about Walt Disney World on the History Channel? It shows Walt's original idea for EPCOT and the plan that was built as well as the other parks there.
