The Santa Clause

Post by Prince Adam »

Since Christmas is just around the corner, I thought I'd take the opportunity to discuss one of my absolute favourite Christmas movies-THE SANTA CLAUSE!!!!!!!!

Now, I love this movie! It's so funny! Tim Allen is just hilarious as both Scott Calvin and Santa Claus, and whatever person he is during his transformation!

The best scenes are:

1. When Scott wakes up that morning to see that he's gained all that weight, and has to rush to work. "There's something wrong with the mirror! There's something wrong with the scale!!"

2. The doctor's office scene. Not a lot of story development or anything, just pretty funny. Love the Jingle Bells heartbeat.

3. The ending scenes when Scott-no-Santa has to tell Charlie that it's best he stays with his mom and Neil.

What does everyone else like about this movie, if they like it at all (which they should!)?

Love that scene too. "Besides, you can dye it. And you should di-et!"

I also really like the opening scene, with Carol of the Bells. It sets up Scott's character, gets the movie in a realistic Christmas setting which gives the entire film its emotional grounding, and is just funny and cool.

I also like the one where he's shaving (got creme on his face and a towl flung on his shoulder) and he has all the "parcels" delivered to SC.

It's just so funny when he's all happy and whistling and jolly and then leans over the banister, where it is waiting for him...

With him whistling down the stairs, it's the first time he really seemed like a Santa Claus. That is, until he started running in the street after the trucks.

Definitely a solid Holiday film. Not one of my favorites, but a good watch all-the-same. I have yet to see The Santa Clause II, however.

For me, A Christmas Story, Home Alone and Emitt Otter's Jug Band Christmas are my "must-see" selections each and every Holiday season.

Good film. Just not one that I feel compelled to watch every year.
Of course, if it's on and I come across it while channel surfing I'll probably stick with it.

Um, not to sound Scrooge-y, but this topic is for The Santa Clause (the almost-perfect Christmas movie), and the others you mentioned might feel more at home in Off-Topic :x :) :D  .

Okay, enough with my sarcasm (I'm a little tired tonight).

Another thing I failed to mention earlier was that The Santa Clause is a movie that's easy to watch year-round, and I think that's because the majority of the film doesn't take place at Christmas. Almost the entire movie takes place during Scott's transformation, between two Christmases.

Very true. Some of my favorite scenes are the ones in the fall when Scott is coping with his changes and losing his son.

Anyway, I feel that the sequel didn't come close to touching the original, and in some ways, it felt as if the filmmakers were too removed from the original film - and selectively chose to keep only a few elements. Such is the case when 8 years elapse between original and sequel. Nonetheless, I still very much enjoyed the sequel, despite most odds. NY Times critic A.O. Scott idiotically lumped SC2 with the live-action "Grinch" movie today in his Elf review. Jerk.

The scenes taking place at Christmas actually aren't the most heartwarming (the ones between Christmases are) nor are they the most funny (ditto).

And the second movie was more of a Christmas fantasy-it's the boy-meets-girl-falls-in-love-because-of-Christmas-magic type of thing, and is comletely different than the first one.
But I love the second one too!

"Are you Santa Claus?"
"Why would you ask that?"
"Because you have a reindeer."
"Lots of people have reindeer."
"Name five."

"You do not want to see this in a Speedo!"

"I'm Santa Claus!"
"What :? ?"

Tim Allen is about as funny as a slab of 12 year old salami...

Don't tell Luke though! :}

Which film? My whole family loved both. When the first one came out, I was 6 and loved the Santa parts, and my parents loved Tim Allen. Then I grew up to like the "adult stuff" too.
Now with the second one, my parents and I really like the Santa having to find a wife parts, while our friends' kids liked the fake-Santa parts.

So both films are meant for all ages. They both have a wide range of appeal, and can be like by anyone (except for those people who took offense at the Tim-Allen-in-a-fat-suit jokes!)

Both of them in fact. For me silly doesn´t need to mean that they are childish, I didn´t mean that.
I simply doesn´t like them at all...
They doesn´t ring true to me (in that sense a fantasy feature ever can do this! ).

Does anyone know if there's any "easter egg" short film on the Santa Clause 2 DVD? (Hmmmm. Easter egg on a Christmas DVD... ?)

The first film had "The Night Before Christmas". It would be appropriate, I think, for the sequel to have "Santa's Workshop". Well, does it?

It would be nice, but I must say the game to get through in order to see the short on the Santa Clause "Special" Edition was way too many hoops to jump through. I guess we'll know about SC2 in a couple of weeks.

I agree. That game is really stupid. However, on most DVD-players, you can easily go directly to the short film by jumping to "Title 5". (See your player's manual if you don't know how to do that.)

You may have to either press stop first, or start the feature film. It depends on your player.
