Donald in Mathmagic Land

That is true in some cases, especially with the Reading Rainbow series that airs on PBS. Each video is around $40.

But as for Disney, I know that the school that I teach at is required to purchase a license from Disney every couple of years to show any Disney film, and it costs us about $200 each time we have to renew it.

I suspect your license covers any Disney film, whether or not it includes public performance rights. The school in which I teach has a similar arrangement. Currently, however, Donald in Mathemagic Land is only sold with public performance rights included (until they release it to the stores), so you could actually show DiML without having secured general public performance rights. In the case of DiML, you are double-covered. Once it is released to the general public--since you have the license--you could show it legally, whereas other schools (without the license) could not.

I am not here to defend Disney, but their response to preventing copyright violation is typical, not unusual. Copyright holders must defend their copyright, or they may lose it.

On the other hand, don't ask me about the recent Sonny Bono extension to copyright! That is just plain evil!

Woah, sure wish the VCR hadn't chewed up my VHS of it a few years back.

Excellent featurette, got to watch this in fourth grade and in my high school geometry class. Doubtless that it will be on DVD eventually. Any word on the rumored educational Treasures set?

It's available in Region 2 on Walt Disney's Fables, Vol. 3. But that's no good if you don't have multi-region capabilities.

I received my copy of this DVD today. Unfortunately, the image quality is murky (as I already moaned in "International DVD") and the transfer is missing the PAL speed-up, which causes unpleasant interlacing artifacts, especially on a progressive display. Perhaps the transfer comes from an analogue source (laserdisk)?

Wow, that's pretty bad. I'm almost certain it'll be on one of the remaining Chronological Donald sets. At least I hope so!

I think it should be included in Donald Treasure vol 4. Since three volumes probably won't be enough, there should be enough space on the final volume even for this "long short".

I have this one on VHS in the Mini Classics Collection, or whatever it's called. It's a legendary film and I hope it does come out on DVD soon, along with Small One, Soccermania, Fluppy Dogs, and several others that haven't been received a decent DVD release in the U.S.

There has long been fan speculation on an "Educational Shorts" Disney Treasures set to include stuff like "Scrooge McDuck and Money" (which I'm dying for), the Jiminy Cricket cartoons, the What Should I Do series, Harold and his Amazing Seed, Winnie the Pooh Discovers the Season, Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land, and more, but I don't think there's ever been any official word on such a thing. It'd be a great set though!

Anyways...

I found "Donald in Mathmagic Land" at a thrift store a few years ago for $5 and grabbed it. It was the Disney Movie Club exclusive version.

In order to get "Reluctant Dragon" - I got the DiML / Reluctant Dragon bundle on Disney Movie Rewards.

Now I want to sell a copy of this movie as I have 2.

The one that arrive with Reluctant D said it was restored.

Is this just a gimmick or is it a better transfer than the older DMC edition?

Actually, the increased cost is due primarily to the educational version of this video/DVD having public performance rights. That's what makes it legal for schools and other institutions to show it without having to contact Disney to secure those rights ahead of time.

I remember seeing this in 3rd grade, and then again in my college math class. The professor was showing it for us to see what kind of materials we can use to help out students. I hope that it will eventually be released on some kind of set!

I'm kind of questioning the use of movies in schools and them having to pay Disney to do so. That just doesn't seem to fit what I have read about in copy right law. But, I'm hardly an expert.
