I've seen two different copies.
Between the copies I've seen so far the "Songofthesouthdvd.com" appeared to be the better of the two. It had some video noise, but the overall color and picture quality appeared to be more accurate.
The second copy was dubbed from a laser disc. It had a softer image and its colors were more subdued.

I own 3 different copies of the Song of the South. one is the original VHS Version and 2 DVDs. Now here is the trick with the DVD. When it gets transferred make sure which one it was transferred from. The Laserdisc transfer is good quality, But there are anoying Hong Kong subtitles at the bottom of the screen during all of the songs.
The color is also more muted. On the second DVD offered, the colors are a bit more technicolor and as if it were released here.
On both DVDs, there are spots where the color is very very dark and the sound is so-so in areas. If you are going to buy them buy it from either. just check into which one was the transfer.
As for me, I am taking the original Laserdisc my borther owns and transferring it to DVD as we speak. I have used a variety of programs from Adobe Premiere to lighten up area, and Sound Edit to heighten the sound, pulling it all together in DVD Studio Pro. I'll be sure to post once it is done.

Uh... That would be JAPANESE subtitles during the songs, since it was transfered from the Japanese LD.ArtOfDisney wrote:I own 3 different copies of the Song of the South. one is the original VHS Version and 2 DVDs. Unfortunately though, the NTSC Hong Kong LD (no subtitles at all -- and, yes, has more vibrant colors than the Japanese LD) was mastered incorrectly from a PAL source and has overlapping still fields, which is noticeable when the movie is paused.ArtOfDisney wrote:The color is also more muted. The color gets more dark for the Hong Kong transfer (or in the vernacular -- muddier), just because the range of color saturation is broader for the Hong Kong LD than it is for the Japanese LD.ArtOfDisney wrote:On both DVDs, there are spots where the color is very very dark and the sound is so-so in areas.
EXACTLY WHERE is the sound so-so? I haven't noticed any sound issues, other that the mono sound was encoded to DD 2.0, where it should have been DD 1.0. This is a pretty small error to quibble about.
WHAT are you talking about here????ArtOfDisney wrote:If you are going to buy them buy it from either. just check into which one was the transfer.
That's what we all need -- yet ONE MORE SOTS bootleg. Like there aren't enough of them out there already...ArtOfDisney wrote:As for me, I am taking the original Laserdisc my borther owns and transferring it to DVD as we speak. Re: I've seen two different copies.
FYI... BOTH copies were dubbed from LD. The one without subtitles was dubbed from the Hong Kong LD, and the one with the Japanese subtitles (during the songs) was dubbed from the Japanese LD.ckturtle wrote:The second copy was dubbed from a laser disc. Didn't mean to step on any toes here....geez. Let's all be friends. As for the transfers, the sound fades in areas of the films, which once I get home I will make note and let you know. And I never said yours were bad transfers. I just made note to small details since I work in Advertising/Design and Video for my profession.
And as for my transfer, I am using the top of the line Professional Equipment that will allow me the vers. to establish an ultimate clean copy of the film. Also, I never said I was trying to move in on anybody's market.
My speciality is Vintage Disney Park Memb.
Maybe with both of our knowledge of the DVD process, we could make an ultimate version of the Song of the South. we should put our heads together. i also have a ton more extras to add to the bonuses.

That would actually be from a poor NTSC >> PAL >> NTSC copy, the overlapping images coming from the initial NTSC >> PAL conversion.Unfortunately though, the NTSC Hong Kong LD (no subtitles at all -- and, yes, has more vibrant colors than the Japanese LD) was mastered incorrectly from a PAL source and has overlapping still fields, which is noticeable when the movie is paused.

Bootlegs
Do we want to discuss bootlegs here as anything but something to avoid? Bootlegging & Piracy are EVIL!!! They burn me up.
If this site has any kind of official connection to Disney, we should desist as of now.

Do you know this to be fact for this particular LD? Or are you making a generalization regarding your multiple observations about the overlapping still fields from other titles?2099net wrote:That would actually be from a poor NTSC >> PAL >> NTSC copy, the overlapping images coming from the initial NTSC >> PAL conversion.

I collect, buy and sell Vintage disney Theme Park Memb.
i.e. - signage, classic ticket books, clothing, park maps, autogrpahs, toys, and many park exclusives.
Some of my own personal collection items are of a framed piece of art of the Haunted Mansion signed by Thurl Raven., and it is also framed along with a classic E-Ticket for the attraction.
Also, if people are looing for specific items and I will track it down and get it.

PAL transfers don't have overlapping fields - they just speed up the film from 24 frames per second to 25 - no frames are duplicated or part duplicated. This is what causes the infamous PAL Speedup on soundtracks - the whole film is shown intact, but 4% faster. This means music has incorrect tempo and voices are higher. Most people don't actually notice this though. And on the plus side, Titanic is over 13 minutes earlier than the NTSC versionThe Lizard King wrote:Do you know this to be fact for this particular LD? NTSC uses something called 3:2 pulldown to extend 24 frames to 30 frame per-second. This results in sequential frames being extended by merging them both together. Some PAL transfers are taken from NTSC masters which include this process, and it is made worse by merging the 30 frames back to 25, which produces even more ghosting.
If the LD is from a PAL master with 3:2 pulldown included it will be from a NTSC mater, not a PAL master.

Re: Bootlegs
Normally I'd agree, but in this case, with Disney flat out refusing to sell the product to a willing public? Sorry, I can't.herman_the_german wrote:Do we want to discuss bootlegs here as anything but something to avoid? Bootlegging & Piracy are EVIL!!! They burn me up.
The more people that see this great film, the better.

I understand where you are coming from.
CD and DVD bootlegs are the absolute last resort for me.
I own a couple hundred DVDs and only three - Bambi, Cinderella and Song of the South are bootlegs. And I will destroy the bootlegs once originals are out.
On CD, I have over 1500 and only four are bootlegs.
I detest doing it, but when the record/movie companies dont issue them, it is a necessary evil.
