I think it's fine if they change the moive a bit. Isn't that what DVD is about? To change things they couldn't do before. But I agree if they change the movie, at least leave the orignal in. This way you can choose what verision you want to watch. Just link in The Lion King.
OH, I do wonder, is that what DVD is about? really?

Yah it's about adding extra stuff. After all who in here is always wanting 2-disc DVDs. Cause we love the extras.

It's also about showing the original theatrical movie in all its dvd glory.. not about messing with that
Aladdin was my favorite Disney film growing up, and so I truly hope that they do a decent job with the Platinum release. But with Lion King's "all fluff, no substance" approach, I'm becoming increasingly afraid that many interesting bits about the film's production will be pushed aside for a "Find the Magic Lamp!" game.
Personally, I really want to hear some of the several Alan Menken/Howard Ashman songs that didn't make the cut. And since Aladdin was never adapted for Broadway, we've never really had a chance to hear these songs.
Even if only one of the songs makes it into the film, I'd still like to have them recorded and put on the Special Edition Soundtrack.
Also, something else I was thinking about... Aladdin's original ending was going to reveal the narrator at the film's beginning to be the Genie (which is why he had the lamp, and why he was voiced by Robin Williams). But they had to cut that when animating Williams' improvisations took too long. For the Special Edition, I'd like to see that original ending restored, along with, maybe a more "proper" ending (no Genie playing with the film projector). I tend to feel that Aladdin's place as a true Disney Classic was hurt a little with the non-traditional ending. Have the Genie reveal himself as the narrator, then cut back to Aladdin & Jasmine sailing away, with the chorus in the background.
"In animation, we have two guardian angels. One is Walt Disney, who continues to touch every frame of our movies.
The other is Howard Ashman, who continues to touch every note of our movies."

The whole film is non-traditional. To do that wouldn't make sense. If you did that you might as well go and take out all of the Genie's jokes and references to modern pop culture.

Well..... if it's gotta be done, it's gotta be done, dang it!
Yeah, maybe you're right.
I'd still like to see the original ending there, though, just so the film is bookended properly. The narrator's presence is never explained.

I am looking forward to a simple cover. I love the collectors and sophisticated approach of the 'Collectors Editions' DVD's. Namely Atlantis, Tarzan, A Bug's Life, and The Emperor's New Groove. The standard single disc edition sported a cartoony, child like character cover art whereas the Collectors set featured simple and classy art work. "The Lion King"'s covert art is not my favorite, I felt that the cover art for the collectors giftset box set itself (with Simba hand drawing) was amazing!
The simple blue background, with the Genie's lamp and the smoke coming out, is perfect. However I am sure we can expect an overdone colorful, character artwork.
