Your choice of next disney movie
I was wondering... If you were in charge, what would be several projects you would want to do at disney, in traditional animation?
A few of my choices are listed below. Imagine that these will be the films to bring the "magic" or money back to disney. (It's turning point)
Jack and the Beanstalk (in the style of sleeping beauty, or maybe a mix of that and old Europeann story book, let's call is new classical)
Rumplestiltskin (same thing)
Theseus (another greek hero, solved labrynth slew minotaur, ect. This would be a more helenic drawing style and would be more true to ancient myth)
The Frog Prince (although with such similair themed movies as brother bear and emperor's new groove, i don't know)
The Odyssey (one of the world's greatest epics. although to do it justice maybe they should break it into 2 movies. Also they could make the illiad along with it, since they love to do sequels and prequels.)
Rapunzel ( I guess they could do a good job with this one too. Although I would like to see a bold new animation style with this)
Other possibilities:
Alibaba and the 40 theives
The Six Swans
The Stedfast Tin Soldier
I think with the new fairytales they should have an opening and closing similar to the originals, but the difference is you would see a beautifully ilusstrated picture with gold trim and it would come alive and the story would start, and when it ended the animation would revert back to the beatiful, non-moving book illustration, if you can picture what i'm saying. Kind off like the begining of mulan when they are painted the chinese picture.

I've voted for "doesn't matter" because ultimately I don't think it does. All the fairy tale examples you gave are good ideas, but they have all been animated before (even if it was done on the cheap and is now available on DVD for less than $5). Disney does have a struggle I think to make a fairytale based story seem new and fresh.
I like your idea's based on legends and mythology - but again you have the problem that such ancient legends seem to be very violent. Hercules worked as a movie, but as a telling of the hercules legend it was a pale shadow of what is should have been.
I think Disney needs to examine how story is constructed, what's common to most stories and learn from that. Like Pixar seem to have done. If this means creating a story based loosely on one or more others (Pixar's "A Bug's Life" is based on "The Grasshopper and the Ants" and "The Magnificent Seven") so be it, if it means taking a single story as a starting point (like "Hercules") so be it, if it means creating a new story with a fairytale-like quality ("Brother Bear") then so be it, and if it means creating a new more modern story ("Lilo and Stitch") so be it.
The story is the most important aspect - no matter how the story originated.

I definately think that Disney need to do a good Fairytale, although I don't think that what their making at the moment is that bad. A good fairytale I think they should make is Rupunzel. Its quite like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella or The Little Mermaid and would remind people of those films and remember Disney (IMO) at their best.

I also voted that it didn't matter.
I always get excited when a new project is announced, but I'm a generally excitable person.
While I don't think it actually matters what Disney releases, there is historical precedent for their fairytales being the best product. Having said that, the recent Lilo and Stitch and Atlantis were brilliant IMO, and I would certainly like to see the epic storytelling in Atlantis again.
However, I did really like the ideas of Rapunzel and the Snow Queen when they were being tossed about. I would love to see another fiary tale soon, but I don't necessarily think it is something Disney should exclusively devote themselves to. Same as the CGI/traditional animation debate - both have their merits, both work in different situations.
I am looking forward to Brother Bear, but I think I would have been looking forward to Home on the Range/Sweatin' Bullets even more - mainly because it was a comedy and it involved cows.
So if you can make any sense out of what I just typed, it is that Disney have been able to make a good balance of comedy (Lilo, and the now seemingly forgotten but hilarious Emporer's New Groove), adventure (Atlantis, Treasure Planet) and fable. Any would be a good choice for me, and they are usually all enjoyable in some way.

i think disney is doing a great job with what they have been doing lately...especially with regards to pixar. i like new ideas to see how disney keeps up with the culture of the day. I love the fairy tales, but many movie industries are making them into live action and it is sorta "blanding" them.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently and I think I've come up with a perfect story for the next Disney film:
The Pied Piper of Hamelin!
I think this would be a story with a good, fairy tale like feel, ample opportunities for musical numbers, lots of scope for comedy character and situations and of course, lots of cute Disney animals.
I think this really could work - but it is a film I would insist has to be done in 2D animation to work. So I'm sure Disney will ignore it.

Another vote for "It Doesn't Matter".
Ultimately we're looking for a film that entertains and maintains its appeal to audiences, 10, 20 and 30+ years later. I love the fact that I can pop in Lady and The Tramp for my daughter knowing that she loves it just as much as I did when I was her age (and still do). Whether these films are Fairy Tales retold or original ideas coming from the creative teams at Disney Studios is of no consequence to me, so long as the quality we're accustomed to is maintained.
As for some of you ideas, PP, I love Odyssey and Alibaba and the 40 Thieves. But as has already been pointed out, these mythical tales can get quite violent and gruesome so there'd have to be some serious work to get around that...especially with the 40 Thieves being slain one-by-one.

Also, when I say fairytales, I mean stories that are already known like Peter Pan. Peter isn't my idea of a "fairytale" but I would in the context of established stories. I wanted to write this in the poll, but it was too much. Just a quick break down of the poll:
Original Stories = Stories the Disney Company thinks up
Fairytales/Established Stories = Stories already existing that could use the Disney touch
Keep Doing What They Are Doing = Pretty self explanitory (a mix)
Doesn't Matter = Again Pretty self explanitory
I also think they should do another animal epic like the lion king and bambe, but this time, tackle the rain forest/ jungle, great potential for beautiful animation.
I too have thought about a story with Cleopatra. Another historical based film like Pocahontas, and depending on who you ask, Mulan.

OK, Perhaps I should reword this and push this off, into another direction....
What stories, would you like to see disney Turn into Full Length Animated Feautures?
I've already listed some of mine, in the first post of this thread, and Empress Kitty suggested "something with Cleopatra" story... Now what would like to see ?
(Oh and 2099net said the Pied Piper...

Animated-movies.net says that "Disney's Rapunzel Will Be A 'Fully Comedic Character'"
USAToday.com has this to say about Rupunzel:
USAToday.com has this to say about Rupunzel:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... y/11855481Most noteworthy, fairy tales are back in vogue even at Disney.
"I noticed that for an organization known for fairy tales, we hadn't done one since Beauty and the Beast," says David Stainton, the studio's recently appointed chief of feature animation. "It's something that the audience wants and we can uniquely present. What makes fairy tales significant are the very deep themes that resonate through them and touch everybody."
Up first: Rapunzel, she of the long, golden tresses. But don't expect a serious bookworm like Beauty's Belle or a passive victim like Snow White, not after hoary fairy-tale traditions have been irreverently and irrevocably Shrek-ified. As Amy Peters, author of The Everything Fairy Tales Book, notes: "The core value of being good and true in these stories remains. But it is dated to think superficial beauty will win the day."
Rapunzel will be a tower-dwelling heroine who really lets her hair down. "For the first time, we'll have a Disney princess who's a fully comedic character," Stainton says. "Usually we relegate the comedy to the sidekicks, but not anymore." Other humorous fairy tales on the drawing board include Uncle Stiltskin, a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin, and The Frog Prince.
Rapunzel won't make her debut until at least 2007. But plenty more live-action, storybook-influenced pictures with a humorous edge are on tap.

Well, I see they've taken my ideas for Rumplestiltskin and the Frog Prince...
Urghhh! What a horrible idea! I hate the idea of Comedic fairytales!
What the hell are they thinking and why in gods name do they want to be like Shrek!!! That movie is already outdated, and not to mention it's sole purpose was to poke fun at disney!!!!
They need to be innovative like Walt was and not just follow the leader, especially when they set the rules for this kind of stuff. Dreamworks/PDI whatever, is nowhere as good as disney, though I do enjoy an occasional flick of theirs, and now disney is going to follow in their footsteps!?!?!
First of all, movies like Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast are timeless, and CLASSIC. They incorporate humour, but the main characters are serious and they get us to care for them, and they incorporate the romance and drama and everything else that makes a story worth watching, and that's the way fairytales should be presented.
If they want to do a comedic fairytale they should do the Princess and the Pea as that is meant to be comedic, and even then they have to know their bounds. But something like the frog prince should be more serious, more epic...
Anyway, nothing I'm going to say on this forum is going to make a difference, I guess we will just have to wait and see, and hope they don't screw up to badly...
*sigh* hhhhuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhh....
