Full Superman Returns trailer

I have to say, it looks as if it's going to be a great movie. Also, from what's there in the trailer, Kevin Spacey does an incredible job continuing on as Luthor from Gene Hackman.

I don't know. It seems kinda corny if you ask me. The funny moments seem like the stick out here (and not in the good "Jack Sparrow" way).

The special effects seem like they could use some work. The superman CGI doubles seem very shiny and appear to be made of elastic. The scene with him on top of the building being shot at seemed very fake. Pirates of the Carribean's seem a lot more real.

But I'm sure Superman will win the Oscar for effects regardless, as the voters seem to hate me and would never let Pirates win. The effects in this seem even below Revenge of the Sith, which wasn't even nominated (but you could all guess my feelings on this subject).

I know it seems like I'm being kinda critical about the effects, but they're pretty important in a film like this.

I loved the trailer, but the performance of Spacey really isn't doing it for me. I'd much rather have the cool, manipulative Lex Luthor portrayed by Michael Rossenbaum (in Smallville). Also, the fact that the movie has self-parodic lines such as "Lex: Come on say it... Lois: You're Insane! Lex: Oh no, not that! The other thing..." It's kind of on the edge of being TOO camp. I hope that's not the case.

Don't worry, Lex is much more sinister in this film than the first two. Without wrecking anything, let me just say "kryptonite shiv in Superman's shoulder."

well actually i think that this is a very important side of Luther. as well as being cool and mainpulitive, he has a very amusing side to him. and it seems as though Kevin Spacey is bringing that across very well. maybe even a little too well.

the thing that bothers me with this movie is the fact that they casted Christopher Reeve lookalike Brandon Routh as superman. now he may be an excellent actor and perhaps the perfect choice for this role, but it almost looks as though they picked him by looking at his headshots alone. see what i mean:

"Brandon Routh" and "Excellent Actor" should never be in the same sentence unless "Excellent Actor" is preceded by a "not an".

Example:

Brandon Routh is NOT an excellent actor.

I really never was into superheroes. Not Superman, Spiderman, the Hulk, or any other green person or has the word "man" attached to it.

Although I am a big fan of comics, and DC Comics in particular, I just can't get enthused about this. Well, that's not entirely fair - I'm a little buzzed, but if for some reason I was told I wasn't allowed in the cinema or the DVD store because I had a beard, I wouldn't be all that upset.

I like that they are taking a slightly different approach, but like the King Kong film, do we even need this?

Truth be told, I was never that excited to begin with, but that trailer has raised my enthusiasm.

While I usually agree, I think comic books have a unique style that could get ramade nicely. Batman Begins proved that as it was A LOT better than Tim Burton's Batman(which I did like though) and all the other Batman films(which I didn't like). This could very well be this summer's Batman Begins.

However, the original Superman is still considered one of the greatest comic-book movies of all time.

*shrugs* Have to wait and see. But it just HAS to be better than King Kong(and shorter)!

Ok, I think Batman Begins is probably the best rebuttal to a "can they do something different with the franchise" question.

However, I don't think they are - indeed I don't think they CAN - with Superman. Like Mickey Mouse, Superman stands for something pure and good, and messing with that too much may turn off some fans. Still, I am also in the "wait and see" camp. It's just that these trailers have done nothing for me yet...

"may be" meaning i've never seen him in anything so i havent got a clue... i use that phrase in the case of crazed Brandon Routh Fans lashing out at me for judging him without ever seeing him.

What is your reason for discrediting dear sweet Brandon, Escapay?

and while we're on the discussion topic of superman discussions.... this guy just made me laugh... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0746125/boar ... 1#42564061

I used to watch the soap One Life to Live, which he was on in 2002 as Seth (a good-but-slimy character that tried to woo Jessica Buchanan away from Cristian). Now, I know a lot of people will say, "Eh, it's a soap, it's bound to have bad actors", but not all soaps have bad actors. Most of the actors are just good actors stuck in badly-written roles. But during his time on One Life to Live, Brandon Routh was living proof that there are bad actors on soaps. And of course, the work he's done between One Life to Live and Superman Returns hasn't been all too impressive either.

And the comment wasn't directed towards you, Iggie (I hope you didn't take it that way!). I simply don't like Routh at all. He's possibly one of the worst choices for Clark Kent/Superman. The worst choice, IMO, was Tom Welling on Smallville.

Well, as I have said before, I'm not a big fan of Superman, Batman is my favorite superhero... and the reason is precisely how oppposite the Batman character is from Superman. However, I love DC comics superheroes.... and the Superman Animated Series as well as Justice League have tought me to appreciate the character.

No matter how "not so hot" the movie looks by the trailer (in contrast with the awesome X-men 3; the only Marvel superheroes I like a lot) we can all rest assured the movie is going to rock at the end. Three main factors:

1) Bryan Singer : he's proven himself with the X-men franchise. Especially with the great X2.

2) Although a retelling of the origins of the character doesn't seem like a good idea (I'm sorry for the new generation, but when a character already has a movie that explains his/her origins... go ahead and watch it no matter becuase its old. That way, the rest of us don't need to go back again to it just because you didn't grow up with it. Cause then what? Every time a new generation feels like will retell the same story all over again?

......HOWEVER, Batman Begins proved to be incredible.

3) Superman is the Mickey Mouse of DC, the same way Spiderman is for MARVEL. As such, they are going to make sure this movie is as good if not better than it should be.

To be honest, I never really digged the whole funny villian vibe in any villian (unless it's a comedy). How can I possibly take this Lex seriously when all he's doing [by the looks of the trailer] is delivering one-liners and self parodic sentences? I don't care much for the comics, so I don't know how he was portrayed there. I want to see evil and creepy. Not "Lex Luthor - Comedic genius".

Well, it's not a disaster. But it's not great either. It really doesn't turn me on or turn me off the film. As a trailer though, it's not really doing its job for me.

Still, given how the Superman film series went over time, I'm sure it will be one of the best movies. Then again, for the money spent, it better be!
