Let's not forget Suri, which TomKat claims originated from a Hebrew word for something beautiful/graceful (I forget just what), but which actual Israelis have said really means something like "get out of here" in modern dialect. Ahh yes, Suri, the alien baby. I left her off because I copy/pasted the list from a post I made on another messageboard, pre-TomKat-the-alien-has-landed.Karushifa wrote:Let's not forget Suri, which TomKat claims originated from a Hebrew word for something beautiful/graceful (I forget just what), but which actual Israelis have said really means something like "get out of here" in modern dialect. This is true and a good point. I think in a way high school musical's message could be that it is OK to be who you are (well, as long as you're cute).

I don't see anything wrong with the name Sharpay. I mean, why does a person have to have a name that's been used before???
One of my sons is named Tyler, and he's the third Tyler in his class. He hates it.
Another one of my sons is named Adisa Andwele - and he is named after someone, but I bet there's no more than a handful of Adisa's in the world.
My step-daughter's name is Aureaulis, and I bet she's one of a kind. Her parents made up the name, and we call her 'Aurie' for short.
BTW - I think the comment about it being Dory-ese for a permanent marker is hilarious!!!!

Well there's nothing wrong with it, it just seemed really...out there. I mean, sure it's no Tiger Lily Heavenly Hirani or Moxie Crimefighter, but the name "Sharpay" just seems so out of place in the context of the film. Especially when her brother has a common name, Ryan. And the last name is Evans, which is even more common.kbehm29 wrote:I don't see anything wrong with the name Sharpay. I HONESTLY cannot stand this movie! It had no magic in it whatsoever! I would rather watch the cheetah girls lol (and that one sucked to mind you lol
) but this movie really stinks IMO.
I only like B5's rendition of "Get'Cha Head In The Game"
and the video but its not even gonna be on the DVD!
Am I buying this movie?!?!?!?
YES! Because my niece want's it!

I don't like the name "Sharpay" either. Every time I hear/read it I automatically think "sharpei" as in the dog breed.

This is really weird. A jock from my school, and his friend, who is quite preppy, are auditioning for some music thingy. And they are singing Breaking Free. When I read the posts earlier, this gave me the chills. It's weird!

Same here... and I just heard Thier going to make a High School Musical 2 and 3Bebopgroove wrote:What's all this buzz over a DCOM?? I've always thought DCOM's to be profit-makers for the channel, and cheap entertainment for the younger generation (sorry, I have a huge dislike towards DCOMs). I don't watch it now, but when I was younger (late 90s), the DCOMs weren't all that great. I never really found anything outstanding about them. The Zenon movies, Tru (sp?) Confessions, the one about the dolphin (which I can't remember the name), and a million others that I can't remember the titles - all of them seemed pretty pointless.
Now I'm hearing all this hype over "High School Musical" (both the movie and soundtrack). I read the synopsis, and to me, it sounded like another lame one from the Disney Channel (again, sorry for negativity). Is it that it takes place in a high school? Can somebody fill me in on the reason for this DCOM's greatness??![]()
And I am now an official enemy of the Disney Channel. Gah, I miss the good 'ol days.

Their making HSM 3??? I didn't know that! I knew they were making 2, but not 3. That's good news to me! I loved the first one.WaltFan wrote:Same here... and I just heard Thier going to make a High School Musical 2 and 3

Re: High School Musical - why all the hype?!
That would be great, when I was in High School I would come home and watch Ducktales and Goof Troop. I loved those shows along with a lot of older ones like Gummi Bears and I also remember when Care Bears used to be on Disney...Fidget1234 wrote:Karushifa wrote: DCOMs don't bother me quite as much as Jetix, the animation block that basically killed classic Disney Afternoon shows on Toon Disney. wouldnt it be nice if there was a disney channel that played nothing but classic disney toons from the earliest years til the 90s and nothing but the classic disney movies- live action & animated... back when u had to pay for disney channel- this is what u got...so not into this whole jet-ix thing...
I thought the movie was cheesy, corny, contrived, trite, pointless, annoying, and superficial. Yeah I hated the sing and dance numbers too. But I can see why people like it. I just cringed at ever scene. Plus I got jealous of the billion-dollar high school that was in the movie. Mine's so crappy compared to it.

China's 'High School Musical' Premieres in Beijing
http://english.cri.cn/6666/2010/08/05/2602s586920.htm
(via jimhillmedia.com)
That actually looks quite awesome. I don't know if we have any members from China here, but if any of you see this, can you let us know how it differs from the original HSM trilogy? It kind of looks like a mixture of HSM & HSM3. I wonder how much will have to do with Chinese culture...I mean, why bother remaking it, you know? But it does look good...
Okay, for good measure, here's the trailer for Mexico's version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5qRFevjTmo
That one looks like a mix of HSM & HSM2, but looks really goofy in some parts. It looks like the Chinese version could walk circles around this one.
Here's the Argentinian version's trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daKlrQrK3TY
That one looks really, really good, too!
The international versions aren't/won't be available on DVD in other countries, are/will they?

I actually quite enjoyed the Mexican spin-off, I liked it more than HSM2. The Mexican and Argentinian are the same script and same songs, but I find the Mexican cast to have just a tiny bit better acting skills, and the songs sound funner and less cheesy as well. Not a very good stand alone theatrically released feature, but I enjoyed it and have been looking for the DVD ever since it was released, can't find it online and my friends and family who live in Mexico can't seem to find it either, which is weird considering it was the best sold DVD when it was released and probably still is for a non-American film. I really would like to watch this new version, though.

Actually the Brazilian version also uses the same storyline and songs, just in Portuguese. It was all part of a project called High School Musical: La Selección (La Seleção in Brazil), a reality show to find a cast to regional versions of the original. Eventually, however, it became a spin-off based on one of the junior novels from the High School Musical series. They're all slightly different, but mainly the same; I don't mind though, if it was gonna be a remake it would have been exactly as another anyway.
I really wish I could find it somewhere with subtitles to share with UD.
I'm thinking the Chinesse version (apparantly uses the same songs) looks like a better production, I wish I knew what it was about though.

Here are two numbers from the three different movies:
The first is the opening number, the Mexican and Argentinian practically use the same lyrics, except the music was remixed from the original showtune to a reggaetón for the Mexican film and later used for the Brazilian film, this left most Mexican fans disseminated at first but it made for a better number. The lyrics speak about the first day of school and how they wish it will be a good year. Also notice they use the same location (in Argentina) for the Mexican and Argenitinan schools,High School Mexico (see what they did there? HSM!) and High School Musical Argentina while using different locations and props (Mexican taxi, etc.) for several other scenes to make the location look like Mexico.

Novo Ano Começou (Brazil)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_CJGRkRXIU
El Verano Termino (Mexico)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAqpnvQwxoM
The second is the closing number; again, the lyrics for every version remain exactly the same, only the Brazilian being in Portuguese and speak about the love of the cast towards acting, singing, and dancing.

Now remember that these are poor YouTube graphics that don't do justice to the motions and flashy colors of a musical, but trust me, once you get past the cheesiness they are very fun numbers.
