Had the morning off, so I watched Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979). While I tend to object to remakes on a general basis, Werner Herzog isn't exactly the first person to retell the Dracula tale, and he certainly wasn't the last. Nothing will ever take away from the masterwork that is the 1922 version, with the long shadows of German Expressionism firmly planted in every horror fan's mind. However, Herzog has created his own classic here, with an atmospheric tension that is every bit as powerful as the original. The leads are excellent, the music is haunting and it looks a treat.

I also watched - appropriately - Ferris Bueller Day Off for the first time. While I thought it fell a little flat in the middle, it is an incredibly fun romp, and probably one of the best of its kind.

Yesterday, I watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It was really good. I actually read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. So why did I watch the next book in the series's movie.

In honor of finishing the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, I had a double feature yesterday with The Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz. The former never gets old for me no matter how many times I watch it (and it's got a killer transfer, to boot) while the latter deserves more recognition than what it gets. I'm really eager to see the Wicked musical turned into a feature film, but I suspect that won't happen for at least another five years. At the very least, I wish we could have a DTV version of the stage show. Those film-quality clips of the actors on stage in the show's trailer MUST'VE come from somewhere. I doubt they were shot exclusively for it, so why not put the whole show on DVD?

So you don't have to read the Prisoner of Azkaban book? ;)

Beauty & the Beast - I'm quite excited. It was exactly a year ago I bought it and watched it. I remember liking it a lot and I have no homework for tonight so it'll be a very nice way to end the night. :)

Last night I saw 'Whisper of the Heart' for the first time. I had a hard time finding this on DVD, I went to every DVD shop in town, and there was not a single copy about :( . I asked in Musiczone, and they told me that they weren't going to get any copies in ever again! :o Anyway, the day after, I ventured into HMV with a friend, and there was one copy on the chart section, so I grabbed it :D.

Anyway, I've wanted to see this movie for a while, I loved the film itself, I liked the characters and has restored my faith in Ghibli! (which was damaged by Pom Poko!) Also, the song features 'Country Road' reminds me of my Grandad, just because he used to play that song in his car alot when I was younger! :D So this made me like it even more!

Just polished off Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress (1958). The influence it had on Star Wars is obvious, from the framing of the opening sequence onwards. A lot more humour than I was expecting, even though I had seen a number of Kurosawa films before.

Getting a bit of a Japanese theme going, so I went with Princess Mononoke this morning.

Much more violent than your average Miyazaki film - at least the Miyazaki films I've seen - it is also incredibly beautiful and poignant. Like Grave of the Fireflies, it is also incredibly appropriate for the current global political climate, not to mention the increasing warmth of the environmental climate as well. To adult viewers, some of the parallels between the ironworkers and human industry generally is all too obvious. However, for younger viewers, it is still a beautifully constructed piece of animation. It is just a shame that this isn't exactly appropriate for the little ones. I found some of the heads popping off a little over the top, and probably not necessary. Even so, thoroughly enjoyable and moving. Easily gets my A rating.

Princess Mononoke: :D  8) Quite possibly Miyazaki's magnum opus.

You'll notice that Ashitaka is the one who does most of the dismembering...this is to demonstrate the power of the demon's curse. He didn't mean to use lethal force against the samurais near the beginning, but the curse forced him to. I'm just glad that Disney wasn't allowed to edit any of that stuff out, or we'd be looking at another Warriors of the Wind fiasco :P
Oh, I'm sorry, you're all standing...here, let me make you a chair!

Crash
I'd heard alot of people say good things about this film so i've been thinking about picking it up for some time now. Anyway i was in WHSmiths (a UK book/cd/dvd store) yesterday as i wanted something to watch last night and i couldnt really see much and it was only £6.99 so i figured id buy it.
The first 30 minutes was a little boring, i think thats because they were trying to set up the characters and to let the audience know whos who but after that the next hour was fantastic.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Holds up surprisingly well with second viewings, imo.

It starts slow, but after the introductions of all the kids, it was unbeatable! Tim Burton is a genius!

Is was even better than the original(though I still like the original).

I give this film a solid 8/10!
