Documentaries

Post by banjoboy »

Hi!
I really enjoy the documentary side of Disney DVD, for instance the "Behind the scenes" and "Disneyland"-tins and the making-of type extras on the CE's. I've pre-ordered the upcoming tins and also the enigmatic "Frank and Ollie"-release at Amazon (who knows, right?), but I'm always looking for DVD-stuff pertaining to the production side of animation, TV-shows and theme parks. Walt Disney bios would also be of interest (I have the Walt Disney Story-DVD).
My question to you, my learned friends of the forum, is: Is anyone aware of any other longer documentaries? Like longer versions of the Pellerin-Kurtti films or, even better, something older?

Thanks!

In my opinion, what you are doing is the best option: the Collectors' DVD editions are filled with documentaries and featurettes that are so enjoyable. I am also looking for documentaries on Disney and Disney animation. It's not only that I enjoy them, but also, that next fall I will be teaching a college course on Disney Animation. So anything will help me. I just wish that Disney released more features such as The Man Behind the Myth and also Frank and Ollie.

Till they provide more like that, I buy all their nice DVDs and of course, the Tins. I can't wait one more month... :)

Thanks, quasi! Good to know you think I'm on the right track. I've seen a book called "The man behind the myth". Is there a DVD also? Good luck with your course - makes me wish I was still in college!

Yes, but it's still a Disney exclusive. You can get it from the <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/cli ... =3&subid=0" >Disney Movie Club</a><IMG border=0 width=1 height=1 src="http://ad.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/show?i ... =3&subid=0" > or the Disney Store.

Hi Luke,

Thanks for the info. Since I live in Europe, the Disney Store will not ship to me. I just got a good lead on the title at eBay, though, so that might work out. It seems worth a little trouble!

Update: I bought Walt - the man behind the myth on eBay ($25.00+shipping) and just felt I had to recommend it. The feature is uncontroversial, but very good. The bonus material, including interviews with Frank & Ollie, Ward Kimball, Ken Annakin, Joe Grant etc etc is pure gold. All in all, this is an excellent documentary and well worth the money. As reference, it's not comprehensive, but think of it as an illustration to books like Bob Thomas "W.D - An American Original" and Steven Watts "The Magic Kingdom".
