The NEXT Academy Awards

Post by kbehm29 »

I've done some searching and haven't come up with any thread to discuss the 2006 movies that may be up for the next Oscars.

Anybody heard anything about or interested in any of the following movies I've heard are geared toward awards? Does anybody have any movies they think will win awards to add to this list? Which animated movies do you think are going to be up for awards this year? Obviously I know nobody has seen most of these movies yet....

I don't see any oscars for Dreamgirls, seeing as its set to star Beyonce and Eddie Murphy.

Charlotte's Web is a children's remake. I doubt any significant critic buzz will come of this movie.

Eragon is also geared toward kids. It's an adaptation of the book (written by a 15-year-old, by the way).

Marie Antoinette looks really cool. I can see that generating oscar buzz. Kirsten Dunst is really coming into her own lately.

And despite its obvious star power, The Da Vinci Code seems to be an action flick based on the novel. I'm reading the book right now, because I want to watch the movie when it's out, but, like I said, I don't see it winning anything...I can see Tom Hanks getting a nomination (mostly because he ALWAYS does).

The others I haven't really heard of yet... :?:

Charlotte's Web - I know it's geared toward kids, and stars Dakota Fanning - but I thought they might have made their major change in release date (from mid-summer to December) because they were looking for some type of award recognition. Julia Roberts stars in this as well.

As for Eragon - I've read the book. I thought a December release was strange as well for this type of movie.

I think I'll edit my post and type in whatever info I do know about the rest of the movies.

FYI...Marie Antoinette is a biopic of the European royal icon starring Kirsten Dunst in the role of Marie. Looks bad@$$!

It doesn't surprise me that Eragon is getting a holiday release. There are no HP movies this year and LOTR is over and done, we need a large sci-fi/fantasy/action/adventure movie to draw the families in.

FYI - I got these movies off numerous web-sites dedicated to tracking Oscar-worthy movies and which have message boards discussing the Academy Awards, etc...

Some of them do NOT make sense to me - especially the Sci-Fi ones....don't those kind of action movies rarely ever win awards, except for special effects, etc...?

Eragon might make sense for a lesser catagory, similar to how the Chronicles of Narnia won.

I didn't realize we were getting the return of Joe Pesci this year! Eight Pesci-less years have clearly taken a toll on the box office, even more than the ten years it's been since Rick Moranis has appeared in a big screen film (in person, not voice).

Anyway, to make this a more productive post, I'll say not many of those titles interest me (aside from DeNiro as director/actor + Pesci formula that caught my eye), but then I suppose that makes them very good Oscar candidates. I suppose the animated feature race should be mildly interesting, what with all the possible candidates. I'd throw my support behind Cars, but, like many others around here, I've still got to be convinced that it's in the stellar Pixar tradition.

All the King's Men is a blatant remake of the classic film noir classic that starred Broderick Crawford. Please tell me that they aren't really serious about remaking this classic. I think I will go find a real tall building.........and scream, and maybe jump. If they try to remake "King's Row" then for sure I will jump. Why do they insist of ruining the classics with these cheesy remakes.

Yes, junkie this is a remake (Complete w/Sean Penn!!) or to keep you from jumping we will call it an update.

But I don't remember the Reagan being in that one, which won Best Picture in 1949. Since when was Reagan ever in good movie?

It was just announced today that this movie is being released Sept. 22nd, courtesy of http://www.comingsoon.net
I have no feeling one way or the other about this movie, but alas I haven't seen the original either. I have read the book, however. I will probably give it a shot as a rental just to see what I'm missing (or not).

Sony Releasing All the King's Men in Sept.
Source: Columbia Pictures April 12, 2006

Columbia Pictures' All the King's Men will be released nationally on September 22, 2006, it was announced today by Jeff Blake, Vice Chairman Sony Pictures Entertainment and Chairman, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group.
Based on Robert Penn Warren's 1946 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, All the King's Men is a classic of American literature that tells the story of an idealistic man of the people who soon becomes corrupted by success and caught between dreams of service and an insatiable lust for power.
With a screenplay written and directed by Zaillian, who received an Academy Award® for his adaptation of Schindler's List, All the King's Men features an all-star cast including Oscar® winner Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, James Gandolfini, Mark Ruffalo, Patricia Clarkson and Academy Award® winner Anthony Hopkins.
A Columbia Pictures and Phoenix Pictures/VIP3A/VIP 4A Production in Association with Rising Star, All the King's Men was produced by Mike Medavoy, Arnold W. Messer, Ken Lemberger and Steve Zaillian. The executive producers are Michael Hausman, David Thwaites, James Carville, Todd Phillips, Andreas Schmid, Andreas Grosch and Ryan Kavanaugh.
"Steve Zaillian has delivered a wonderful and provocative motion picture with a timeless story and fantastic performances. We couldn't be more proud of the way 'All the King's Men' turned out. Early fall will be a great time to release this film."
While a uniquely American story, the message of All the King's Men is universal and very relevant today. It uses politics as a framework to delve into the more profound conflicts of human nature -- sin, guilt and redemption. Warren's novel was inspired by the career of Louisiana governor Huey P. Long and had a profound effect on contemporary literature, serving as a model for some of the best-selling political novels of the past half-century.

I am praying that both "Marie Antoinette" and "Dreamgirls" are phenomenal. I'd rather not have another "Memoirs of a Geisha" where my anticipation was built up, only to be shot down.

Eragon seems fairly ameature (from what I've seen) and it seems like it will be too much dragons and magic stuff for the audience. It also seems like some kid got bored and decided to write a story that rips off LotR, Narnia, and even Potter (though not so much). So, I can expect it to do decent, but not to pass 200 mil.

A Praire Home Companion, from what I hear, seems like something I will be interested in. Basically it equals this: Streep + Lohan = Good in my book.

Yeah, that's the tough thing about predicting Oscar winners...especially before the movies even come out. You never know whether the film is going to be Oscar material or not, no matter what sort of buzz abounds about it.

At this point, the only prediction I'm pretty sure about is that Cars will end up getting a nomination for Best Animated Feature. And unless Disney can somehow squeak Ghibli's upcoming A Wizard of Earthsea into US theaters in time for consideration (not likely, I think), then Cars may well be the contender with the most momentum going into awards season. We shall see.
Oh, I'm sorry, you're all standing...here, let me make you a chair!

A Praire Home Companion looks really good. I love Lindsay Lohan (don't care what anyone says, she's a great actress). And not to mention all the other star power that movie has going for it.

If anyone has never heard of Garrison Keilor's (sp??) radio programs on which the movie is based, you should really check it out. They are hilarious!
