Also, should I hold my breath for chip & dale + ducktales releases or just bite the bullet and pay silly money for region 1?
In all the years that I have been following Disney DVDs, I am yet to work out a single pattern to their global releases. Why aren't ALL DVDs released simultaneously across the globe with the same bonus features, for example?

As for Ducktales and Chip & Dale, while I wouldn't completely count them out, I wouldn't hold my breath either. We have rarely seen any 'season sets' of Disney animation here. Gargoyles didn't get a release, and the tendency has been to release single disc compilations. Heroes, Winnie the Pooh, Timon & Pumba etc. Some of these aren't available in the US, but it isn't much of a trade off for the lack of local boxes.

But as I said, who knows what Disney Australia are doing? I suspect the delay comes from the US Mother Ship at times, but given that the hard work for the PAL transfer has already been done - with a UK version already in the shops, presumably dual encoded for R2/4 - I don't understand the delay either.

Australian Releases

Post by HappyPug »

Hi everyone.
I've been a long time reader first time poster and i feel sorry for you guys
waiting for all of your favourite shows & movies to come out here on DVD.
...cos they won't.

I've imported everything from everywhere else from the get go.
I grab the "Platinum" ones here cos we usually get it a couple of days earlier ( except for Lion King & the magical missing Lady & The Tramp)
and then a couple of days later I get my Platinums from the states.

Like Lady & The Tramp for example, its not out here till the 2nd week of July yet i've had mine since its US February release. I suppose a similar gap happened with The Lion King...

Bambi II is out here the first week of July for fans of Bambi.
Its cute but...you know...and Anthony from Idol singing the song in
the credits is a bit unnecessary but what can you do?

Thankfully, we're getting The Little Mermaid on time.
First week of October.
With 101 Dalmations half way through March & the final of
the Platinums, The Jungle Book October of 2007.
Final before Blu-Ray re-releases that is...

In terms of collectability the Platinum Releases are awesome, they have Gift Boxes for goodness sakes. That's so cool. But Australia doesn't get
that sort of thing as we don't have budget over here for them. Hence why Fox keep re-releasing things in standard Amaray as opposed the trendy fold out cardboard sets like the States always has.

But RE: stuff not coming out here its cos Buena Vista here don't distribute stuff unless it sells in both US & UK brilliantly & with raptuous applause.

It may be a total winning sell out in the States, but if it comes out in the UK and doesn't sell they assume Australia doesn't want it at all.

Which is sad but they way they do it.
Its not just them either its every distributor. They're crazy that way.

So my best advice is to import stuff from the States, buy them from here too to support local distribution and enjoy all the Disney goodness.

Welcome to the forum, HappyPug!

Thanks for the info. If that all holds to plan, then we are doing alright. That's excellent news.

I've followed a similar pattern (buy local and CE from US). However, US copy-protection has recently resulted in a lot of incompatibility problems with my two players. This was with the Treasures and LATT.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your source on those dates? The only reason I want to double check is that because I write for DVDBits, I wouldn't mind reporting on that. Of course, without an official source, I could get a knuckle-rapping.

You're probably right about the reason Australia doesn't get a lot of things, and it is a shame. From a sales point of view, I can understand it. However, look at the amount of sports DVDs that come out - how many people actually BUY those?

Anyways, thanks again for the info and welcome!

She keeps me up to date if i need to know anything.

An early July release for Lady & The Tramp & first week of October for
The Little Mermaid are definites.

I doubt she'd get in trouble for me telling everyone.
But its good for everyone to know I say.

That's great news. Do you know if we are getting the same 2-disc treatment as the United States?

If you don't mind, I may just post that on DVDBits tomorrow. (Don't want anybody thinking it is an April Fool's joke). I will simply refer to my source as a 'BVHE/Disney insider...'.

Thanks again! :)

to Cordy Biddle's question about it being 2 Disc...

Post by HappyPug »

...I hope so I didn't think to ask.

I'm guessing it would be exactly the same.

The only difference may be the cover art is the UK version I think she said.

I'll see her over Easter i'll annoy her for more info then hey.

Fox & The Hound is another definite for Christmas I remember cos
it was discontinued earlier this year so it could get re-released with
the video sequel thats out in time for Christmas.

But no one really cares about Fox & The Hound....its nice but..you know.

Thanks for your insight HappyPug... excellent first few posts! It's a shame we don't have anyone from Buena Vista on these forums, its always good to chat to people in the know. I was thinking that i wouldn't mind a career change...

I tell u what, having some sort of firm dates is much more comfortable. I won't rush off and buy region 1 copies just yet, cos at least i know that we are getting these.

Thanks mate

So much for 2nd week in July for Lady & The Tramp.
Well I guess if you count the first two days as a week....

Ah well you guys can get Bambi 2 and Lady & The Tramp together.

I would, but i already have them from America.

I'm sure they'll be good releases here but they'll make great presents
for the kids.

Those double packs too sound decidely random.
Since I own every movie individually.

But hey, why not I guess.

Don't own treasure planet or Atlantis so if the price is good and the packaging cool then i might consider that pack.

I guess the news has been broken already :)

After months of nothing, Disney have been saving it all up for July. Guess I'll keep the credit card clear for Bambi II, Lady & the Tramp, and maybe some of those twin packs!

Well, the press site only says "1 disc". That isn't always accurate though, and it would be odd for us to get a complete different edition from the UK one. Not unprecedented, but odd.

These have been floating about for a while, but I'm not sure if I've posted before. These are exclusive EzyDVD bonus offers with the upcoming Disney DVDs:

Chicken Little with BONUS TATOOS (not the little guy from Fantasy Island or the Russian 'lesbian' band Tatu):

Chronicles Of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe : Special Collector's Edition DVD comes with a FREE INTERACTIVE CD:

Oh, and after almost a year on non-updates to the initial thread, I've fixed the 4 month schedule for April to July 2006:

Bad news kids

Lady & The Tramp is one disc.

But don't worry most of the bonus stuff is included anyways.

I laughed twice at the Fred Willard visiting the Dog Park featurette but
other than that you won't miss anything.

Ah well. Everything else looks like its on it.

Scrubs Season 4 is out in October if anyone wants it.
As are Lost & Desperate Housewives Seasons Two.

And as for no Little Mermaid Gift Set?
Outrageous!
