I mean -- come on...aren't there close to 400 million people living in the US alone, and only 5.5 million of them, a mere 1.3% own a copy of Cinderella? Why did the VHS versions from YEARS ago do better than the new DVD releases? Are there still people who haven't upgraded to DVD? These numbers don't make any sense to me at all. They ALL seem amazingly low.
Hmmmm...I can think of a few possible explanations:
1) since Cinderella is more or less a "family" film, it might be better to look at how many households there are in the US, as opposed to people. I;m guessing there are closer to 100 million households in the U.S., which makes the paltry sales seem just a bit better.

2) there were perhaps some people who bought the VHS years ago and didn't feel the need to update

3) given that the latest release was last year, there may be some people who decided to opt out on this release and wait for the hi-def edition that is sure to come :)

You raise a great point. I didn't think "households". Now 5 or 13 million out of 100 million seems a bit more realistic....but what about international sales? Is that included in those figures?

Good question...I'm not even sure if R2/R3 editions are released on the same schedule as R1. I would assume that the 5.5 million figure is R1 sales, or perhaps just US sales, since R1 also encompasses Canada.

I would think that a high-profile release like the Cinderella: SE would be able to pull in at LEAST 5.5 million units of domestic sales, even if some people are opting to wait for hi-def.

No, these numbers refer only to the USA. The only worldwide sales figure I have is TLK's and it was 56 million copies back in 1998.

BTW, "The Little Mermaid", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Lion King" were all the top-selling home video release of their respective years.
