AFI 100 Years of Heroes and Villains: Disney chracters
At AFI (The American Film Institute) they have a countdown each year and this years is the 100 greatest heroes and villains. I went threw the list of 400 nominees and found the following Disney characters(ones marked with * means (focusing on a different version, but the Disney version is mentioned):
Belle from Beauty and the Beast
Cruella deVil from 101 Dalmatians
Davy Crocket *
Hunchback of Notre Dame *
Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story
Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty
"Man" in Bambi
Peter Pan
Mary Poppins
The Queen from Snow White
Robin Hood *
Long John Silver from Treasure Island
Tarzan *
Dick Tracy
Lady Tremaine (Stepmother) in Cinderella
Ursula from Little Mermaid
That seems to be about all of the Disney characters, we will have to wait and see which ones make the final list when the shows airs on Tuesday.

Thats a hard choice for best Disney villian. Crullea is funny but the Queen and Maleficent are really evil. I mean Maleficent wanted Aurour dead just because her parents didn't invite her to their party. The Queen wanted that huntsman to cut out Snow White's HEART! And dont get me started on the psycological (sp?) torture that Lady Termaine buts poor Cinderella through.

I am so tired of that. I realize the lion king was a good movie but I do NOT think it was the greatest (animated) movie of all time. And I don't think it needs to always be nominated or even mentioned when anything, like the AFI's this year, happens to occur.Luke wrote:I think it's ridiculous that Scar was left out. What's up with THAT?
Sulley wrote:not to mention the fact that two of the most evil aren't even nominated; Scar, as Luke said, or the cruel, soulless icon_twisted.gif Frollo icon_twisted.gif !
Scar, in my opinion does not stike fear into the hearts of children, I was a young child when I saw this, and while I realized he was a bad guy he did not scare me. A good villian does just that, they stike fear into your heart. That's what Maleficent does. However I do agree that Frollo should be included and I am so happy Lady Tramaine is actually acknowledged.
(sorry if it sounds like i'm ranting, but i really do get tired of the whole thing. good movie, yes, but enough already)
Ok, I just looked over the list and saw a few other disney heroes and villians if anyone cares....(*again means focusing on other show, but disney one is listed too)
-Captain Hook*
-The Three Muskateers*
-Stromboli from Pinocchio
Guess that's all I see. But I tell you what, after looking at the list and seeing some of the movies that are remembered, it sure makes you wonder who puts the thing together....

Well, at least we got some characters to make the Top 100 list, even if Buzz was notably missing.
Cruella De Vil was around #36 villain, and the Queen from Snow White was #10.
Among heroes, Tarzan was around #40 or so. They included the old B&W Tarzan movies first, but they showed a little bit from the Disney version.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the list. Happy with the #1 hero, so knowing that Alonzo from Training Day made the list, but not Scar...oh well, it's just one of those AFI things.

No Pete?
What sort of half-wits sit on the AFI board in the first place? The same ones who also serve on the Motion Picture Academy and stopped "¡Moulin Rouge!" from winning Best Picture in 2002 and didn;t even nominate Baz Luhrmann for Best Director!
(and that statement is only half in jest - I do think Pete is the ultimate Disney villain, but I accept he is likely to be overlooked)

Uh, Matty? That's how they made it to the #20 villain spot - by being such a tangible threat that they kill the hero's mother.Matty-Mouse wrote:Man shouldn't be given credit! They killed Bambi's Mother!!!!
I think it's very cool that "Man" made it on the list - and on a fairly high ranking, too! Although I think it's a dern shame that an over-the-top villainess like Cruella De Vil makes the list, but not the far more superior Maleficant, or Lady Tremaine. LT I can live with, but Maleficant's snub was just wrong.

I don't particularly think that Pixar characters, or classic short characters like Pete or Bluto really make the cut of a true "hero" or "villain". They are, for the most part, caricatures of the roles. They're more of a dynamic pose or a mustache twirler than a character that inspires real fear, or awe. The spots were awarded to characters that were larger than life without being awkwardly or cornily so.
But of course, this being AFI, there had to be a few characters from old films that few have heard of...

Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I think that Pete is the longest running film based villain of all time (having appearing in some of the pre-Disney "Alice" shorts). I think that does deserve some kind of recognition.
