Advice please (ebay Mermaid dvd)

Post by Mermaid Kelly »

I want a Little Mermaid Limited issue dvd SO MUCH!! :o I am trying to scope out ebay, but I'm scared of getting a bootleg! Also my parents won't let me get one wth a super-high price (like $30 or more). I don't know what to do, this is pissing me off sooo much!! Does anyone know what I should do?? :( Any tips on how NOT to get a copy or a bootleg?

Check on ebay. That's the best choice. Make sure that it is in good condition and not a bootleg.
Although the LITTLE MERMAID DVD release was very poor... and I mean: with no extras, almost... If you can't wait for 3 or 4 years, then buy it. Just remember that the more you wait, the more expensive it will get in online auctions.

Good luck in trying to make The Little Mermaid part of your world.

my advice is to stay away from anything on ebay since you never know what you are going to get. i would wait for the Platinum Edition to come out cause that is going to be a good 2-disc DVD. besides the Little Mermaid might come out sooner than you think.

The Little Mermaid Limited Issue DVD retailed for $40, so that's the bare minnimum you'll get one for. Plus, since it's extremely rare and hard to find you'll probably be looking at a higher price. I'd say you'll probably be able to find one for $60-$100. Good luck. I need one too.

If you want to know 100% that you are getting the real deal, get one that hasn't been opened yet. It has to still be in the plastic and also look for the original stickers on it, like the Disney ones that say that there are coupons inside or whatever. But look for things like that, otherwise you may be getting a fake. I had some trouble with fakes and believe me, they can look exactly like the real deal, right down to the inserts. But the picture quality can actually be pretty good on them too.

Beware of Asian Subtitles, Region 0 discs and discs without inserts as these will all be bootlegs.

I say buy the Platium Edition it will be a 2 Disc and will be better than the Limited Edition. Just wait 2-3 years it worth the money $40 or more. I want the Limited but I'm going to wait. :D :D

Here's an idea.

When you find an auction that you're thinking about bidding on, post a link to that auction in this thread. We'll take a look at it and give you some feedback.

In general, stay away from auctions that list the DVD as Region 0 or list English as a secondary language to say, Thai or any other Southeast Asian dialect. That area seems to be a hotbed for the bootlegs.

Also, I'd take a look at past auctions by that person. If he/she has sold 50 copies of that disc in the last month chances are it's a bootleg auction. And needless to say multiple negative feedback screams shadyness.

Great idea, Indiana. And just to point out, regarding feedback, the opposite isn't necessarily true...not having many or any negative feedback doesn't mean they're not selling bootlegs. It could just mean that people don't notice or care.

Hate to say it....but for $30 or LESS you will only get a bootleg :(

There are tons of Disney experts here....so like Indiana and the "webbie" said, give us the item # or post a link and we should be able to tell.

Good Luck in your hunt, but my best suggestions is to increase your budget or accept the fact that you will most likely not be able to find one for $30 or less .... but I'll never say "never".

Ok thanks you guys!
I was planning on waiting for the platinum, but now I hear that It will be edited, and that makes me mad! I don't want them to delete anything...it's ok if they add a new song or something, but I don't want them to delete what was already in the movie. :o I mean, it's ok if they fix up the priest a little bit so his "thing" doesn't show  , but I heard they might take out the scene where Ariel is coming up from out of the water since she is naked from waist down. I really hope they don't take that out!
Also thanks to all you guys for your help! :)

Looks pretty legit to me......it comes with the inserts and everything. The feedback is not bad.
I would hold off on placing a bid to the end though. Gives others less of a chance to out-bid you. I'll be rooting for you.

PS - My only fear is that others here who are interested in obtaining this DVD will also try to outbid you now that they can see the link....let's hope that is not the case. I'll be rootin for ya! :)

WOW I never even thought of that :o . I didn't think anyone on this site would do something like that, but after all, this IS a Disney site! (I deleted the link anyway). Thanks for wishing me luck :)

I am having a similar dilema with ebay and the possibility of bootlegs

Can anyone have a look at this link and give me their views

The seller appears to have positive feedback and states that the DVD is original but I would appreciate a second opinion .

Hi fred20 that looks like a region 1 origonal, the statesiders on here should know better than me about that. I buy a lot off ebay both UK and US and there are only one or two dogdy people on there, having said that i did buy a region 2 OOP jungle book and when i got it it turned out to be a copy - he'd used someone else's cover picture so it looked genuine. The best thing to do with an item on ebay is if in doubt leave it - there will always be another one along soon.

It *looks* legitimate, but I'd e-mail and ask him many questions about the condition of the case, the DVD and make sure it as in insert. That way there are no surprises if you are the high bidder.

Hi fred20,

I would NOT place a bid just yet. This SELLER appears to have sold many opened copies before.........which sounds really really suspicious to me. Where does he get all these opened copies from :?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3353931523

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3356432352

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3354365191

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3354599393

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3356771843

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3354749702

I could go on....or you can have a look yourself. They have probably given him positive feedback, because they don't realize it's a copy (and it is a decent quality bootleg). I bet most have been parents who have bought these for their kids so they don't look into the nitty gritty details.

Just my opinion, I would stay away.....sounds to cheap and too good to be true.

There, see?

That is a PERFECT example of someone doing what I had recommenedd earlier -- check the seller's auction history. That would be a HUGE red flag if I were contemplating a bid on this and I might even be tempted to e-mail and ask about that.

Great detective work, Aladdin
