SOTS really blows. That is not going to happen. I have the CD of the whole soundtrack of SOTS after I downloaded all of songs from the original LP as seen on BasicHip's site back in January where it was part of the "Album of the Week". If I want to see that movie that I have never seen it before, try LimeWire.

yeah i was a little confused too... anyways i think this is horrible news. I really wish that Disney would go out on a limb and try releasing it. If anything aim it more towards adults instead of making it really kiddie. Then it will look more like a piece of art than just a controversal movie. I dunno i think people need to cool it about everything, what's in the past is in the past and we can learn about peoples depictions on the past through films like this. I don't think that people should get too upset about this film, but who knows i'm a middle class white boy what do i know.

I find this real immature by Disney. The film is a work of art, not something that is "racist". I really cannot understand Disney. Disney can release rated R films under the Hollywood banner, but yet they are afraid to release this film. Disney needs to get a grip. Release the film. If the film offending, then people need to get a reality check. This is not 1950, this is 2006.

An ever growing list on movies Disney refuses to release because of content:
1. Song of the South
2. Only Yesterday
3. So Dear to my Heart- aparently Disney does not love it anymore either, but I don't know what the suggestive content would be.

Ashame, a movie that so many people enjoy and the excuse for not releasing it is because they are "concerned by some of the depictions and how they would be received". Seems Disney are just to worried about what a certain percentage of people would think......

Lets create a lovely film that alot of people enjoy and never release it again.......makes sense right?

I have nothing profound to say except...

1. I now hate Disney.
2. I want to either get a copy of the bootleg DVD of Song of the South, or get somebody to record my video version taped off BBC2 to a DVD copy.

Sadly, It looks like Disney's Evil Empire moniker is just as valid now as it was when Eisner was running things.

On a completely irrelevant rant, Buena Vista Home video desperately needs a complete clean-house overhaul. The Anti-Only Yesterday people at BVHV need to go the way of the 2D animatora, as well as the peole who edit the Ducktales and Rescue Rangers sets, and the people who refuse to release Power Rangers in seasons.

Well this is a major disappointment.

It's times like these that I almost consider no longer supporting Disney's films. I love them, but they often make the most foolish choices. The film is a classic, and while there are some possible problematic areas of the film, it's certainly not as racist as Disney seems to believe. In fact, Uncle Remus is portrayed as the most good-natured and sympathetic character of the entire film. Simply disgusting.

Nah. You wouldn't catch a properly evil empire running scared of the NAACP. If they were that evil, they'd just release the dratted thing and evilly profit from upsetting people of colour.

I was fortunate enough to have seen this movie in its last theatrical release in 1986. It's a wonderful film and deserves to get some sort of release on video.

Sure, it depicts African-Americans as simple, subserviant people who are jolly and happy to be in the service of white folks even though slavery had been abolished. There are many other movies made during this era and before that suffer from these same negative stereotypes. Think of the MGM musicals that feature white actors in black-face doing minstel shows.

"Birth of a Nation" the 1915 silent movie is available on DVD and it was made by a white supremesist and depicts the Ku Klux Klan as a heroic cavalry that rescued white folks from the opression of dastardly blacks - A blatant historical misrepresentation if ever there was one!

My point is I understand Disney not wanting to release this film under a "Disney Classic" or "Platinum Edition" banner. However they should find some other venue to release it to collectors and not have it marketed to children. How about licensing it out to another label and not have the Disney name appear anywhere on the packaging the way they did several years back with the Anchor Bay releases?

Wow, I'm really shocked with this decision.

There's been so much build up and so much talk that you'd think it would be released in SOME form!!!

I have a DVD boot of it from a VHS release in the UK. My mom had remembered seeing the movie when she was younger and really wanted to see it again, so she bought it off ebay, watched it and gave it to me. I tried to watch it three times, but could never get past the first 10 minutes. Finally she came to visit me and forced me and my bf to watch it. BF fell asleep, and I didn't think it was worth the hype but enjoyed parts of it (mostly because I'm a big Splash Mountain fan).

I'd buy it to have it in a legit form, but I don't think it's worth all the concern. I don't see how it's anymore racist than any other film depicting African Americans from that era. It would also be released under the disclaimer that it was not meant to be racist, produced in a different era, etc etc.
