I think it was a waste to release Tarzan and The Emperor's New Groove at the same time; both of them didn't go through restoration, I think. By rereleasing films that don't need restoration will give Disney to focus on the films that do. At this rate, Disney should just hire more people to restore their films.
All in all, I'm looking VERY much to this release. The trailer made me all sad inside because it really gets me when a child loses his/her parent. I think this should get a 2-disc because it was made by Walt Disney.

err magicalwands, those movies don't need restoration, they haven't been damaged yet to need restorations, in fact they are digital files so all you can do is re-render them at higher sharper resolutions for new formats, in fact, most of the dvd you think are "restored" arent, they are just transfered correctly for the first time "ever" on dvd

the only thing noticeable in the old Dumbo was grain from a print. The Dumbo trailer (from the brief time i saw it) on the Lady and the Tramp new DVD looked fairly grainless so this time probably scanned from the negative.

Hopefully. There's just something I prefer about a 2-Disc set over a single one. I just don't know one it is. Maybe just the sense of getting more for your money, even though there's a lot of great 1-Disc DVD's out there. And there's certainly enough extras to stretch it to 2-Disc, so that we can get the highest bit-rate possible for the actual feature film.Lazario wrote:Will it be 2 discs?
I wonder if any of the features on the disc will offer any information on cut scenes. There seems to be a lot of contention that much of the 'Jive Crows' scenes were edited from the film, in Disney's attempts to remove what was deemed 'Stereotypical Black Characters' by some. I never really saw them as such, but you know how P.C. some folks are.

Well, Dumbo sure as hell deserves the same treatment as the best Platinum Editions of classic Disney films to date. And I consider it a must-have and a better-made film than Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I'm not sure who liked the original 60th Anniversary Edition, but I think whatever they had on the package for special features must be on this DVD as well, then extended with whatever resources Walt Disney DVD can scrounge up. Though, sans anything to do with modern musicians and their renditions of "Baby Mine" or any of the other songs. I really hope there will be a feature all it's own to go into "Pink Elephants on Parade", because it is and will always remain one of Disney's most stunning and masterful animation sequences with an incredible song to go with it. I hope this edition is able to surpass Alice in Wonderland- Masterpiece Edition somehow, just so we can continue having hope for the future of Disney releases of their older films. And that one day, Pinocchio gets the double-disc, red-carpet treatment!

Framed properly? Is there something wrong with the framing on the current DVD??marlan wrote:Great! I hope it's framed properly this timecastleinthesky wrote: The Insider actually says it has been restored and remastered.
Good news, they added Pinoke to the list of Platinums in May 2003!Lazario wrote:And that one day, Pinocchio gets the double-disc, red-carpet treatment!

I've always felt that in terms of story and character, Dumbo was always the strongest of the first five (Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi). And while its animation looks far more simple than the likes of Bambi or Pinocchio (the Monstro sequence is the best stuff in the film, IMO), it's got a warmer feeling to it, a more involved sense for the viewer. They don't need to be impressed with what they see, it speaks for itself and its simplicity makes it all the more memorable. I wish Disney hadn't done the "top selling" stats to determine what's Platinum and what isn't. Dumbo deserves a Platinum treatment, even if it's not good enough for the name.
I agree, Laz, there should be a solo featurette all about "Pink Elephants on Parade". It's one of the best sequences in Dumbo, and perhaps the best known in the movie.

Seems (like many other video transfers) it may be zoomed in a little too high to show a 100% of the Academy 0.600" x 0.825" 1.375 projector aperture. Or so i've heard. Marlan will tell you more, I'm sure.Escapay wrote:Framed properly? Is there something wrong with the framing on the current DVD??marlan wrote: Great! I hope it's framed properly this time

Well, marlan posted this. That's a start. But I'd be surprised if a complete image of that precise frame could be easily found without a laserdisc that reveals more and laserdisc capture capabilities.Escapay wrote:Hmm...will we get to see comparison shots?![]()

It's framed too heavily/tightly (what's the correct way of saying this?).Escapay wrote:Framed properly? Is there something wrong with the framing on the current DVD??
There are two screenshots from my R2 DVD here: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... 853#133853
If you add TV overscan to that, you'll miss even more of the image.
In cinema, it looked different.

I was too old to be scared by the pink elephants when I saw Dumbo for the first time (and, on the other hand, maybe too young as well...) - I didn't see Dumbo until I really started discovering Disney animation about the age of 15-18, some 15 years ago. The first time I saw Dumbo, however, I though the Pink Elephants sequence was basically a waste of videotape. I did not appreciate that sort of absurd material then. I "learned" fast, though. For several years Disney's more "creative" moments from the 1940s have been among my favourites.

If you referring to Operation: Dumbo Drop, that film has been released on DVD as well. Although it was presented in fullscreen.Bebopgroove wrote: And God forbid the dvd release of the live-action Dumbo
As for Dumbo SE, I may getting that one as a double dip. Mainly, its my first time for buying double dips. I hope that the SE will have more extras than the 60th Annversary version.

I maybe wrong, but, I assumed live-action Dumbo referred to the show Dumbo's Circus which was live-action with people in costumes, and a talking Dumbo. Not positive when it was from, but I remember watching it a lot when I was little.RyougaLolakie wrote:If you referring to Operation: Dumbo Drop, that film has been released on DVD as well.Bebopgroove wrote: And God forbid the dvd release of the live-action Dumbo

Yes, that's the one. It was Dumbo's Circus. That was some scary stuff. I watched it when I was little, but I can't imagine why. It was just.....weird. I even remember the beginning theme a little bit. There were trumpets....and that's about all I can remember
PS: I'm actually a girl, but I can understand how you thought I was a guy. I don't think there's a way to put genders in your profile, is there?
EDIT: I have decided to share the freakiness with you all, so here ya go:
