Will You Replace Your Current DVDs With Blu-ray

im just goingto sit back and wait to see what happens. I doubt ill rebuy things though. Unless its an amazing improvement from DVD

Same here. I've nearly finnished my collection and I don't really want to start it all over again unless it's really worth it.

Is there such a thing as "finishing" the collection?

I'm not upgrading. Blu-ray and HD-DVD players are backwards compatible with DVDs, so I'm not upgrading each film in my collection to high definition. Besides, we have to see which format wins first...

I don't know if you have realized that Disney chose Blu-<a href="http://corporate.disney.go.com/news/cor ... ml">ray</a> more than a year ago so there are NOT gonna be HD-DVD releases of Disney films so you don't have to "wait" to see which HD format wins? Either you buy a Disney film in reduced 16mm quality (DVD) or you buy it in 35mm/VistaVision film quality (Blu-ray). 90% of Hollywood studios are gonna release their films in Blu-ray. 70% of studios are NOT gonna release their films in HD-DVD. Blu-ray is more than twice the quality of hd-dud.

A few posters here that have said they are not gonna upgrade or wait, they already have HDTVs they spent money on and with dvd they are just using half or a quarter of their $800 LCD or 15 foot screen capacity. Why not fill it up with <a href="http://www.kinoweb.de/film2001/Shrek/pi ... quality</a>.

Choose wisely little grasshoppers.

I am not upgrading. It's too early for DVD to die, and it won't. Not now.

I have no plans to upgrade. Since I own over 600 DVDs, I have spent too much money buying DVDs to try to upgrade to any other format. If future movie I want (Disney or otherwise) is only available in Blu-ray, then I'll decide then. I'm an "old folk" and expect my DVDs to last my lifetime. I'm happy enough with the quality of my two TVs (a 23 year old 25 inch and a 14 year old 26 inch) and regular DVD quality. I'm not interested in investing in HD either.

I probably won't upgrade all my dvds, just my favorites. However, I won't upgrade any until I have a new TV and a player. I'll get a new tv and player when my current TV dies. So, it will be a while before I upgrade.

Probably, over a fair amount of time. As I start to buy Blu-Ray, the majority will probably be titles I don't already own on DVD. Though once or twice a month, I"ll probably buy one that I already have the DVD of (assuming it's actually improved). In some cases (such as not carrying forward certain bonus features or recording new commentaries), I'll probably keep the DVD as well.

I will upgrade only my top favorite movies because if a dvd is compatible with a HD-DVD or a Blu-ray player then it wil not be necessary to upgrade all of them.

i got a pretty good dvd collection started now but i wanna start getting my movies on blu-ray once i get my ps3

I'm almost sure that you need a blu-ray player because the DVD'S are read with a red ray and the blu-ray disc like its name says are read with a blue ray.
For me it's a very good thing that the blu-ray players can read the DVD's because this means that it will not be necessary to replace all my collection.

I agree with you and in case that I replace some DVD's it will be because it's one of my favorite movies or because I didn't like the transmission of that DVD.

I think that I'd only replace my dvds with Blu-Ray ones when the old ones become too scratched to play or they get broken. With Blu-Ray's greater storage capacity, there's the possiblity of a great number more of extras. If it was one of my favourite movies and the blu-ray had a significant number of extras that my older version didn't, then I might think about replacing it. But only if it was a movie that I absolutely love. For example, the first Halloweentown movie. If a newer version of that came out with behind the scenes documentaries, commentary, etc., then I definately would. I did double dip with the Star Trek movies. I had numbers 3 and 4 on dvd already, but this last Christmas I bought the Ultimate Star Trek collection, which includes 2 disc director's/special editions of all 10 movies. But I'm keeping my copy of number 4, The Voyage Home (the one with the whales. It's my favourite) because there's a really great Director's special on it, telling about the hidden water tank that was found underneath Paramount's parking lot. It was used for years to shoot all sorts of footage for different movies involving water battles.

But they won't be obsolete. The Blu-Ray player is backwards-compatible and will be able to play all the DVD's you currently own.

So if you upgrade and buy the new player, you can still keep your current DVD collection, and from what I've read they may even look a little better even though they're not blu-ray discs.

I'll probably buy the Blu-Ray versions of movies I already have (of my animated titles), but that depends on what kind of special features they have (if the Blu-Ray release of The Lion King has features from the Laser Disc that didn't make it on the dvd and the UNEDITED theatrical version, I'm so buying it. Same with Bambi). But I'm not selling my dvd collection just because of Blu-Ray.

And I won't be selling my multi-region dvd player. That's like my baby

Once I do, I will concentrate at first on the Pixar films which I've been holding off buying in anticipation that they will see the biggest upgrade in picture quality from the blu-ray. Then I will wait and see if the HD picture is that much better than the old DVDs. So far when looking at HD screens in the department stores, I have not been impressed by the increase in picture quality over the old standard. Initial reports had been that the HD picture was so good it was practically 3-D. I just don't see it.

I will probably start buying DVDs in the HD and Blu-Ray Format. But I am not about to start replacing each Disney DVD that I have. Especially after replacing most of my VHS tapes with DVDs!

You should also take into account that most department stores use splitting to get the image onto all those displays; which can potentially cause signal degradation. It's much easier for them to do that than to have seperate HD tuners running for every TV.
