Will You Replace Your Current DVDs With Blu-ray

Post by lighthousemike »

With the ever so close first Blu-ray releases (May 23rd, Sony, MGM, and Lions Gate titles. Disney hasn't announced any release dates yet but will release only in Blu-ray and not HD) and Disney fast pace re releasing DVDs to make a buck, how fast will you replace the current DVDs with the Blu-ray ones?

I definitely won't upgrade for a couple of years. By then I'll be able to see for myself if it's worth it. And when I finally do get a player, I'll probably purchase all new movies on blu-ray, but ones I already own? That really depends on how much of an improvement the release is and how much I like the movie to begin with. I imagine I'll only re-purchase a few of my favorites on blu-ray.

Nope. I will upgrade the movies I like the most but not ALL of them.

Especially since (if Blue Ray survives) DVD won't turn out to be something like VHS. DVDs will still mantain their quality and live alongside the new format.

I'm gonna sit back and watch the dust settle and then find out which format is going to stick around, then I will consider the reasons I will have to start buying the new format. I will not jump into it blind, that's for sure.

I'm not. But I will get the new disc when let's say I had the chose of BLU-ray and DVD, I would go with the BLU-RAY, considering that blu-ray has more extra to offer or better quality of video.

I am fairly confident that Blu-Ray will end up the ultimate winner of the format war, because it has greater "future-ability" with it's storage capacity.

I think once the PS3 is released with the Blu-Ray player capability, that will be the straw that broke the camel's (HD-DVD's) back.

I will be one of the first people in line on May 23rd to snatch up my first few blu-ray discs. The PS3 will be my first Blu-Ray player, and I will wait until they come down in price to buy a stand-alone player.

I can't wait for Disney to release their blu-ray street dates!

I'm not upgrading all my discs. Assuming the new format actually catches on, which I have severe doubts about, I won't buy a new player until the prices go down considerably. And I'll probably only buy new releases in Blu-Ray; I'm not really much for double-dipping. Considering that I just started getting into DVD a few years ago, I don't really have the desire to have to upgrade my entire collection so soon.

It really surprises me how completely unexcited I am about the new formats. Sure they hold more data and the pictures snazzier...but I just can't bring myself to overly care. Eh, maybe I'll change my mind later.

So you mean to tell me you all go running to buy when a DVD comes up with just 1.33 times the quality (upgrade from 4:3 to 16:9) or just with a little less grain (Dumbo) but you won't upgrade to something that has 8.00 times the quality??
I think you're just in denial. :)

a quick note for you PS3 will NOT be out this year.
Sony keep on pushing back the release date. heck even Japan doesn't have it yet and they will get it first.
it looks like we would have to buy a stand alone player if we want to check out the new blu-ray discs this May.

One thing i KNOW will leave both HD-DVD and blu-ray behind the Current DVD players is the security measures they took with them. If you'll changed anything in the players (like changed the region code) they could shut your player down remotley. - for this reason alone i will not buy it.
i think they have gone too far and try to controll OUR players almost 100%.

no,Because my dad just bought me a new 5-Disc dvd player in January for my b-day.
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

I will not upgrade my DVDs. I see no point, especially if the DVDs are backwards compatible with either HDDVD or blue ray. I'll wait to see which format wins, and then start buying in that format, but all the movies I have now will not be upgraded unless they are movies like Titanic, Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, that need hi definition to get full potential.

But most of my DVDs will remain on DVD.

I really agree with you kbehm. If anything is going to kill HD-DVD, it'll be the Playstation 3, completely.

I suppose either way I'll wait out the "storm", even though we all know who the victor will be..

i might buy only the disney films in this format at first. i just want the best quality i can get with disney. The only problem with that is i will most likely not be able to get a bluray player for a few years. So i will continue to buy DVD's for a while... i'm just a little scared by the idea that i might have to replace all of my collection.

First I'll wait and see what catches on. Then I'll most probably replace quite some of what I've got - but far from everything. I think I'll still prefer to spend most of my DVD money on titles that I haven't already got.

I'll probably keep my DVDs for as long as I can, or before I see that It is beneficial for me to change. I'll wait a while before doing so.

I will wait to see who wins the "war" HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, or even current DVDs.

I might replace a few select DVDs with the HD version, but nothing else. If one of the formats does catch on and replace DVDs I will then start to buy new releases in that format.

Both formats in my opinion still run a huge risk of failing. Outside of movie forums and the internet, the buzz about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD is slim to none.
