Brother Bear Reviews

Well, I created this thread to try to lever the monstrous 11-page "all-purpose" BB thread initially created five months ago by Choco Bear. That, plus the talk is now turning to the Brother Bear reviews themselves, mostly. So I thought we could use a new thread to "review" the reviews, plus give some of our own - once we see it next week, of course. ~_^

So, as of the time of this post, the consensus on Rotten Tomatoes is 10 rotten and 2 fresh. Whew. Bad omen, methinks. O_o
Yet, reading the reviews, I'm not surprised. I'd always thought the film looked a bit too rehashed - like it had taken a few too many concepts and elements from other successful animated features of years past. And these reviews confirm that suspicion - it really doesn't offer anything unique, and it's way too pandering to the kiddies (and I'm sure even they'll be insulted... ).

And who wants to bet that the damn Disney execs will blame its failure on the fact that it's cel-animated? I swear there's almost a conspiracy from the higher-ups at Disney to make traditional animation fail... *gak*

Still, I'm gonna see it. If for nothing else, at least out of morbid curiosity - I wanna see how bad it really is. And as another plus, I've learned what the word pastiche means - it's used in at least three of those Rotten Tomatoes reviews.

okay, i didn't know what pastiche meant either.

for those who are curious,

pastiche = a dramatic, literary or musical piece openly imitating the previous works of other artists, often with satirical intent.

Well, Roger Ebert has not posted his full, written review yet, but he and Richard Roeper will be reviewing the movie on their syndicate show this weekend. I know I'm anxious for Ebert's review since I tend to agree with his choices in movies (Usually, anyway. I just heard his review of the Lion King DVD. ).

Little burbs and snippets from movies is very nice, but can be misleading. I'm anxious to read some full reviews from reviewers I actually respect.

And, of course, I'm still hoping for the best.

Mind you the whole purpose of the Internet is to find fault in things...

While I personally have low-expectations for this one, I may be pleasantly surprised (as I was with Treasure Planet) and I'll wait until I see it 'til I make up my mind.

And what do critics know? Most of them blindly follow the others so as not to look like they didn't understand it, or "get" it, and the other half just badmouth anything that wasn't made in French 60 years ago. I tend not to read reviews when I can help it
