I just saw this movie for the first time tonight. From all the reviews, I was expecting it to be pretty bad. Instead, I found it comparable to the Silly Symphonies, which I absolutely adore.

My favorite segments were the two jazz numbers and the story songs. It was awesome to hear Benny Goodman music in a Disney movie. I also liked Sterling Holloway as the narrator of Peter and the Wolf.

I thought the whale number was a great story, but there were a few things about it that I found slightly irritating (like the "Sold Out" sign in front of the Pearly Gates). If I had my way, I would move that song closer to the front of the movie. Thanks to the technology of DVD, I can do just that, and my version will end with "After You've Gone."

My favorite shorts in Make Mine Music are "Peter and the Wolf" and also "All the Cats Join In".

As for "Martins and the Coys" I did see this several times as a child and thought it was really good. I think I may have had it on tape. I really wish that this would be released in some dvd in the u.s.

Out of all the animated features of Disney, Make Mine Music is the one that I have never fully seen (Peter and the Wolf and Willie, the Operatic Whale were rented, though not the rest). And sadly, it looks like I won't be seeing it due to wanting a better copy than the edited "genuine" copy available; I am still looking for an old and rare uncut video released in the UK during the 1980s of the film, as I don't think that I'll be able to see it uncut any other way at present. Either that, or I'll sadly give up and try and find an unofficial yet uncut copy, if it exists, get the edited DVD out of desperation or never see the film. :|

Oh, why can't the BBC or the BFI get their hands on it and show an unedited version of the film some how.

I remember being really impressed by this film. I especially liked "Without You" and "Two Sillouhettes", which apparently, no one really liked. "Blue Bayou" was nice but pointless - musically, it was lovely. Peter and the Wolf was better the second time, so I was disappointed when I saw it the first time all the way through. I did not care for "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met" at all. But the ending was nice, the heaven sentiment was comforting. "Casey at the Bat" was kind of funny, I laughed my butt off when the woman shouted - "kill the umpire!!" "After You've Gone" has my favorite musical accompaniment of all the shorts. I haven't seen the "Martins and the Coys" segment either. But there's some stuff in "Casey" and "All the Cats Join In" that REALLY makes one appreciate political-correctness. I did not like the aggressively mean jabs at overweight people in both shorts. Nor did "Cats" make any kind of point about the 'square' music fan they kicked out of the ice cream shoppe - that just made them look elitist and the guy looked stupid. It just didn't fit with the carefree style of the short. And I seem to remember a jab in "Casey" at one of the players they stereotyped as a 'sissy', they didn't say it nor am I positive that's what they meant, but I am 99 percent positive that they did that with one of the baseball players - not cool at all.

I think as younger Disney fan, I was surprised when I found out about all the package films, BUT I was more surprised to learn that these movies were where all these old cartoons I LOVED came from. I know Disney shows would air them seperately on tv, such as the old "Kcal kids" show that aired here locally in southern california for YEARS.

My favorite is easy, and I can watch it over and over - All the Cats Join In. There's something about it that reminds me of my grandmother, and my childhood. I ADORE IT.

"Make Mine Music" is probably one of the least known, but most-loved of the Disney animated musicals. "Peter and the Wolf" with the unforgetable voice of Sterling Holloway, who also later did the voice of Winnie the Pooh, is just a fun and entertaining to watch today as it was when this was originally done in 1946. Voice talents like Dinah Shore, Jerry Colonna, Benny Goodman, The Pied Pipers and others made this very likeable from start to finish. While the DVD doesn't have "The Martins and The Coys", that doesn't take away from the pure enjoyment this film provides. My grandkids get bored with the "Willie the Operatic Whale" segment, but most of everything else seems to command their attention. I still rate this DVD a strong 8 and recommend it highly to those who don't own it yet.

Disney made "package films" for a few years during and after the war when they basically couldn't afford to make real animated features. The "production values" may not be all that much, but they managed to show a lot of creativity during those hard times. I appreciate MMM and the other package movies a lot - and particularly the jazzy pieces.

As for "political correctness", we may see (or in some cases no longer see...) some things that seem to be in bad taste. And I think it's all right that Disney hasn't done anything quite like that for decades. But I strongly disapprove of them removing "questionable" elements. I care too much about history for that. The DVD of MMM is still a very enjoyable collection of material, though. The "Martins and the Coys" piece is not the best one of the lot.

Sorry to bump up such an old topic, but does anyone have an MP3 of the Johnnie Fedora And Alice Bluebonnet-sequence? I've loved that segment ever since I was a kid.
Since the movie hasn't been released here, I bought the Region 1-version (mostly because of the Johnnie-segment). I can't rip music from Region 1-DVD's myself, and (as far as I know) there isn't a soundtrack available.
I'm sorry if we're not supposed to ask for these kinds of things, but it's taken me years to find the cartoon again (I never knew it was Disney till about two years ago, when I started searching for the DVD), and I reaaly want it as an MP3.
Again, sorry to bump this topic up. Then again, why was it all the way down there? The film is kind of a mixed bag, but that should mean there's something for everyone (except people who want to see animated rednecks ;)).

I'm excited because I am finally going to be able to see this movie. I haven't been able to find "The Three Caballeros", "Saludos Amigos", "Make Mine Music", or "Melody Time" at any of my local video rentals stores, and they are the only remaining Disney Animated Classics that I have yet to see. So, finally I signed up for a FREE trial version of Net Flix so I could finally see all the Disney animated classics. Who knows, maybe I'll even enjoy my membership. We'll see, but as soon I see Make Mine Music, I will post my thoughts...

I finally saw this film in full last night. It's not great but it's certainly not without it's merits either. It seems to have been tagged a poor man's Fantasia but I think that is a little unfair. Any film following in or retreading the steps of Fantasia is going to struggle to meet expectations and also you have to take into account the effect that war had made on the studio at that time.

Some of the segments seem very uninspired and any moments of true Disney magic seem a bit thin on the ground but as a whole I do think MMM is of historical worth and interest even if it is a little unsatisfying. You can see why Walt Disney was disappointed with it.

These films do make a nice change from the norm though and if you are in the right frame of mind or mood they can be quite pleasureable. I find them to be really chilled out and they have a relaxing effect on me. I'd definitely recommend to anyone who's the slightest bit curious to go find a copy and watch it.

I recently rented it from Netflix, and did enjoy some of the shorts, while others were not so good. My expectations were low, so it wasn't an overall disappointment to me.

MMM should definitely be viewed in "its proper historical context" - then it probably shouldn't be too much of a disappointment to anyone. I like the jazzy pieces a lot and I think those make up all right for the rest.

Some neat tidbits:

http://www.tcmuk.tv/movie_database_resu ... e&id=82464
The working title of this film was Swing Street.
In a March 23, 1946 Hollywood Citizen-News article, producer Walt Disney is quoted as saying that because the studio could not obtain the rights to use music from I pagliacci for the segment, Eddy "wrote a phoney one himself. Complete with sobs." Many modern sources include I pagliacci when listing songs in the film, even though Disney's comments are confirmed by a careful viewing of the film.
In late May 1944, a Hollywood Reporter news item announced that Disney had resumed production on the musical feature, tentatively titled Swing Street, and described it as "a saga of music from modern classic to boogie woogie." The news item noted that the studio was still planning to include the "Clair de Lune" sequence; Disney eventually decided to use the song "Blue Bayou," sung by the Ken Darby Chorus, to accompany the sequence.
According to information in the MPAA/PCA Collection at the AMPAS Library, the studio was required to cut two shots of the teenage girl dressing for her date during the "All the Cats Join In" sequence because of her obvious nudity. The PCA file also reveals that the film encountered difficulties in England, where censors demanded that depictions of "Sonia the duck" and "Willie the whale" as angels be cut, in addition to the shot of the Pearly Gates with a "sold out" sign at the end of the segment featuring Willie. Eventually, the officials agreed to allow the film to be exhibited if the shots of Willie as an angel and the "sold out" sign were removed, although the shot of Sonia was left in.
The two segments featuring Benny Goodman were combined into another short entitled "Two for the Record."

@Sotiris: Melody Time and Make Mine Music are the two films that haven't been put on Blu-ray yet that you were referring to in the The Black Cauldron thread, right? It's a shame, too, because they (and Fun and Fancy Free) are my favorites of the shorts films. I'd much rather Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros were the two still waiting, since I hate them. I got them for completion's sake when they were released on Blu-ray via DMC, but it was the first time I'd ever bought them before on any format.

I'm just glad the restoration people talked about being on Disney+ for TBC is finally being released on home media. I can't remember--didn't some say that TSitS had an improved look on Disney+, too? If so, I hope eventually it will be released on Blu-ray with the corrected look someday rather than that blurred mess.

Yep! It's a shame the package films are so unappreciated and undervalued by Disney. I think they're great! Very entertaining and full of charm. I hope when they finally do make it to Blu-ray, they won't be censored. Melody Time wasn't censored on Disney+, so that's a good sign, but the jury's out on Make Mine Music which is still unavailable on the service.
