Your thoughts on: LADY AND THE TRAMP Platinum Edition!
Hey everyone! So far I really like the Lady and the Tramp DVD. The games on it are really fun (though the board game is a little confusing) and the behind the scenes are entertaining. I all ready have the video because this is my favourite Disney movie, but I wanted to get the DVD for all of the extra features.
I got my DVD at Zellers because we got it $10.00 cheapter for using Club Z points.

Love each other despite our imperfections.

I went to Target today and I picked up the DVD of "Lady and the Tramp". That movie is in both full screen and widescreen versions. I've never seen a widescreen version of "Lady" before. It was so great it was the first Disney film in a widescreen format. And then, 4 years later, "Sleeping Beauty" was the second animated feature in the same format as "Lady and the Tramp". That was in 1959. I've seen "Sleeping Beauty" in a widescreen format, but I will have to watch it with "Lady and the Tramp". The second disc has the behind the scenes look at the making of the filmcalled "Lady's Pedigree". It has footage from Walt's return home from the town where he grew up. It has some early sketches, the animation, the music and others. In the middle of the segment on the musical scores, Oliver Wallace does musical scores for a dozen Disney animated features except a bunch of animated shorts. It was last film that Oliver wrote the entire score. He was great. On that segment it features the late Peggy Lee. As you may know, Peggy Lee passed away in 2002 of a heart attack. She was a great singer and a songwriter who wrote the music for film with Sonny Burke who was at the time he produced a lot of Frank Sinatra albums during his Reprise years. She does the voice of Peg. If you are a fan of the movie, they put out a website dedicated to singer Peggy Lee. You should check out her official website www.peggylee.com
By the way. I enjoyed watching that movie. By the way, the ending of the film has the restoration credits. Same as with "Bambi and "Cinderella" where both have the restoration credits next to the end title. I can't wait for "The Little Mermaid" to come out in the fall.

The discart is transparent. I think someone else mentioned this. The case has snaps on the side.
I played the movie using fast play and was treated to the pan and scan version.
Wait, Luke already said that. If you want to see the widescreen versison, go to the main menu and select.
Lady is adorable in the beginning. I only saw a couple of minutes, but I like what I see. Jock and Lady have cool accents. The big rat that Lady chases is scary.
My favourite line so far is:
Lady: "Notice anything different?"
Jock replies: "- Eh, uh, y-you've had a bath? - No, not that. You've had your nails clipped?"
That is so funny! lol
The widescreen version is so wide. It is even wider than Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
If you'd excuse me, I'm going to play with my plush toy.

Actually, Luke, I remember reading this whole thread brouhaha at HTF over Peter Jackson and the way he shot King Kong. Apparently, he shot it in some film format that is ideal for both widescreen and fullscreen viewings, so that in either way you aren't really gaining or losing much. I'm not quite sure how exactly it works. However, the people were pissed because it was as if he wasn't trying to film something made for the big screen, but rather with the TV in mind. The Film aficionados were in a raucous.Luke wrote:That's how the majority of menu screens are encoded today. They're designed for 16x9 with all the options fitting in the 4x3 center of the 16x9 frame, leaving the excess space cropped out on 4x3 playback. What I don't understand is why the same thing can't be done on 16x9 films (as an option) so that a cheap makeshift "Fullscreen" version can be made available to those who want it without the need for making a second master.Jordan wrote:I got the R2 release of Lady and the Tramp (but this isn't the point lol) and I realized that the DVD menus were NOT in widescreen on my TV but in a cropped 4/3 ratio ! Whereas when I put the DVD in my computer I get the whole widescreen menu, how do you explain that ?!

I'm kinda sad that I had to pick it up a day late.
I've gotten each of the last 3 Platinums the day they came out, but I had to wait a day for this one.
I love the restoration and the making-of feature. I haven't checked out too many of the bonuses yet. But the DVD-ROM Virtual Puppy thing was DARLING!
I also found it amusing that the guy doing the voiceover on the 1986 re-release trailer wasn't the same guy who did the voiceovers for most mid-80's-present Disney trailers, but the guy who did Disney Channel voiceovers during the 80's and much of the 90's.
The packaging and disc art are kinda lame, but what are ya gonna do?

I watched the movie yesterday and thought it was pretty good. Pretty simple story and delivery but that's how much of the Disney movies back then were. The only thing really outdated too was the little talk about how there's no way to tell what sex the baby was going to be. Other than that it really doesn't feel like 50 years old. Beautiful picture & sound too. I thoguht the disc art was ok. It just looks so faded out though. I like the normal full color much better and hope they switch back.

Musicradio, think about it for a second...you're at a Disney fan forum. Did you seriously think we didn't know ANY of that? And in a thread where people who have bought the exact same DVD as you are talking about it?

I just thought it was set in the present day which would have been 1956.

Other people have said this and I have to agree with them. This is the weakest Platinum treatment thusfar. The restoration on the film is great and the surround mix is well done, as is the standard. However, the second disc seems really short on supplimental features. The making of documentary is the best bonus feature. I also liked the excerpts from the Disneyland TV show. However, the man who animated the Genie in "Aladdin" is a host throughout the DVD and he annoys me. He's got a really nasal voice and is very corny. They really couldn't have gotten anybody else to host? I doubt Andreas Deja was doing anything that he couldn't have taken time out of to host it. I always like what he has to say. What's worse is that the Genie man does the voiceover on storyboards of deleted scenes. One area where I have to give them really good credit is that the new music video is not a teen pop star. It's a crooner. I forget the man's name and I didn't much care for the music video, but he did a good job with "Bella Notte" and I would rather see more stuff like this in the future. I think after No Secrets did "Once Upon A Dream" on the "Sleeping "Beauty" DVD I about lost all faith in new music videos on DVD's. My final huge gripe is that this DVD is a fast play DVD. I've always thought of fast play as being on DVD's that are strictly aimed at kids. All the dtv films have had it, but this is the first Disney classic to utilize this feature. It's annoying because it tries to force me to watch the fullscreen version. I know I'm not supposed to gripe about the slipcover, but why doesn't this one have the flap? The Lion King sequels had flaps! lol. Anyways, I really hope they treat "The Little Mermaid" with the same amount of care as they did with the previous platinums, because this release doesn't measure up.

I have to agree with everything goofystitch had said. This is by far the weakest platinum edition, and what's worse? It has FastPlay!!! Has there been FastPlay on any of the other Platinum Editions????? No!!
I just hope that they won't do that to The Little Mermaid. That'll just make me cry
! Anyway, I also didn't like that it had very few supplemental features. Usually when I get the other Platinums, before LATT, it took me about a few days to watch all of the supplemental features. But on LATT, I watched every single feature, and played the board game, all in one night, not that the board game was bad or anything (my team lost, we didn't get any ribbons, and I'm a Disney fanatic!). I just hope that they do a better job with TLM. I did like, however, the picture and sound. The cinemascope version was excellent, and I didn't see a single flaw in the whole movie. I could also really hear the sound, all of the songs were brilliant. I haven't yet watched the fullscreen version, or have adopted a pet on the DVD-ROM bonus feature. Oh well. I did like the movie, and it does touch my heart every time I've watched it.

I don't see what's wrong with FastPlay.
I mean, it does have that menu screen with the "This DVD is equipped with Fast Play..." thing, where you can simply choose to go to the main menu. No one's forcing you guys to use it (unless you decide to stick the DVD into the player, sit for 30 seconds, and complain when it starts up..)

I don't mind the FastPlay, but I would think that Disney would put into consideration of just leaving the FastPlay on the sequels of movies like Bambi 2 and Kronk's New Groove. I just don't see why you would need to watch a dvd like it was a vhs.

Well we gotta keep in mind that Disney isn't just selling their Platinums to collectors. So even if as collectors we may find it annoying, a parent would prefer having fastplay on a DVD (be it Platinum, or regular release, or DTV, etc.) so that if their kid wants to watch it, the parent can just slip the disc in and not worry about the kid messing it up.

Well, I guess your right about that Escapay, but could't the parent just wait until the menu comes up and press the play button?Escapay wrote:Well we gotta keep in mind that Disney isn't just selling their Platinums to collectors. They could, but maybe it won't even be the parent (or any higher figure of authority in the house) putting in the DVD.
When I was three, I already knew how to turn on the TV and VCR, put a tape in, and press play, stop, rewind, fastforward, pause, record, etc.
And even though people regard DVDs as more fragile, there are still people who just buy them and treat them as they would any video. They'd leave it out, they'd hold it the wrong way, etc. So a 4-year old kid who is pretty savvy with handling discs but isn't allowed to touch the DVD remote, may get Lady & the Tramp as a birthday present, and simply take it out of the case and stick it in the player, and expect it to play like a regular video.

For all we know it could be a day off from school and he's at home with nothing to do, so he sticks in a DVD while his mom is upstairs asleep since she works night shifts as a nurse.TheSequelofDisney wrote:yes, but wouldn't you think that if the four-year old needed help with playing it someone would be there to help them?
