Why Is Sony Finding Nemo in India?

Post by Jake Lipson »

Animated News reports via the Internet Movie Database (IMDb): "In a report likely to raise eyebrows among those following the current contract-renewal talks between Pixar and Disney, an online entertainment trade publication in India is reporting today (Thursday) that Sony Pictures Entertainment is planning to release Pixar-produced Finding Nemo in English and Hindi on Friday. The publication, Indiantelevision.com, did not indicate why Disney's Buena Vista Distribution India is not handling the theatrical release. However, it quoted SPE Films India director Uday Singh as saying, 'We are dubbing this movie in Hindi and giving the masses a chance to experience the Disney magic.' Sony is reportedly distributing an English-language version of Nemo, as well."

Well, they were right. This DOES raise my eyebrows. Why would Disney allow Sony to handle the India distriiution of their most popular US film ever (or any movie for that matter?) And what does this mean for the contract renewal talks currently going on between Disney and Pixar?

I think no.

Disney don´t have interest of putting a lot of languages in it dvds. here in brazil we just have portuguese, spanish and english.

Some dvds from another studios have a lot of languages like thai, korean, chinese (mandarin and cantonese)....

PAL DVDs usually have lots of languages on them. My Dutch copy of The Little Mermaid has English, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Tschech, Hebrew and Greek audio tracks. Plus subtitles in English, Dutch, Greek and Icelandic.

Disney is moving away from this practice now - especially where they include DTS audio tracks on their European discs. For example, the French Lion King disc only has French and English DD 5.1 and French DTS, while the UK release will have English and Russian DD 5.1 and English DTS. They're started to author different discs for different countries.

Sometimes live action films slip through with lots of soundtracks, and sometimes the DTV's slip through with a little more (The UK Stitch! has English, Portuguese and Spanish for example).
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I always thought the max number of audio tracks for DVD was 8.... :P

Anyways (from what I refer to online...so correct me if I'm wrong) R1 and R2 DVDs are usually limited to 2 to 3 audio tracks, whereas other regions have extra to cater to wider speaking audience.

R3 DVDs from Disney have minimum 3 languages included if they're of "normal" type (i.e. Bambi, Lady & the Tramp etc.) Usual languages are the original English, Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese), Malay or Thai

Special editions have much more. The R3 version of Monsters Inc. has 4 languages (English DTS, English DD5.1, Cantonese DD5.1 & Mandarin DD5.1). Snow White SE was given 4 audio tracks in 3 languages. The latest R3 Lionking SE DVD has 5 languages on disc including both english DD5.1 and the enhanced remix for home theatre. Add to this DD2.1 tracks in Mandarin, Cantonese and Thai.

Adding all these extra audio tracks does come at a cost though....probably due to lack of space. MI has the "special effects only" track removed....but I prefer the extra language track anyways :D . This is probably because of the addition of multilanguage menus, extra subtitles plus the extra audio for translated documentaries (is hilarious to hear Roy Disney speaking in Chinese!! )

But HORROR OF HORRORS!!! Although Snow White and Lion King were released as 2-disc SE/PE versions in R3, Beauty & The Beast was given a single disc treatment only with no extra features except MTV and trailers....arrrggghh :(

Well, yeah. Eight is the limit and some discs do indeed have 8 tracks.

See this for an example:
