Tom Hanks

Post by bambifan56 »

We have any Tom Hanks fans on here? I think that guy could act in the worse scripted movie and turn it into an oscar winner. Great great actor! Just another topic to keep the board moving haha.

He's going to be in The Da Vinci Code, that movie is going to rock! They have to do Angels and Demons too because that book rocked!

Eh... I 've never been a big fan of Hanks. I've never seen a movie that he starred in (besides Toy Story 1&2 ofcourse) that I enjoyed. I feel he doesn't have a lot of screen presence. Plus, The Polar Express kind left me with a bad taste in my mouth, I'll just leave it at that.

Memnv.........it is Bosom Buddies not Bussom Buddies.........and it was one of the funniest television shows of its era.

I hate girls with Bussoms, but I really love girls with bosoms.

Now that's how it works Memnv. Watch the spelling next time.

I remember when I was little and saw Big, either on TV or a rental. Had no idea who Tom Hanks was, so when I saw Forrest Gump a few years later (probably the first movie I remember with Hanks), I didn't know it was the same person, lol.

I think my favorite TH movie would have to be Sleepless in Seattle, followed by Forrest Gump and A League of Their Own.

Anyone remember Joe versus the Volcano? I caught the last half-hour of it a couple years ago, gawd that movie was horrible.

I haven't seen many of Hanks' later films (Saving Private Ryan, The Terminal, etc.). I saw Cast Away on TV, and while it's an interesting film, it bored me to death.

Oh dear. Another film I feel I have to defend. It's true that the latter half of the film disappoints, but the opening is absolutely stunning. I like it. So there. At least it tries to be different.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Philadelphia was a convincing performance for me too, just showed how good he is..

Actually, I agree with that. Philadelphia is that kind of movie that you can or would avoid watching more than once, which you did out of obligation, because there are movies you watch to 'face your own mortality' in a positive way, and another in a negative way. If you've seen it once, you'll always remember that a second viewing wouldn't be more enjoyable. It's the kind of movie that makes you feel really helpless. And as a filmgoer, I hate that feeling.

Tom Hanks on the other hand, is hard to take as a comedic actor, which is where he got his reputation - Bosom Buddies, Big, The Money Pit, Turner & Hooch... I never liked him as a comedic actor, really. Although he generally had a good eye for quality comedic material, his role was always essentially a screaming, angry but still charming guy. Trapped him a bit. He certainly had a great penchant for doing that, but it stretched him so thin that he was forced to reinvent himself in dramatic roles. Or else his career would have fizzled and dried up.

I'm just not all that impressed with his more serious, dramatic roles. Though of course he brought just the right amount of humility to Philadelphia. People just feel endeared to him because of his variety.

overrated actor, how can you say that. I don't feel he gets enough credit. He has one of the best resumes in hollywood. He has a couple of Oscars, Most movies he does become hits. Have you seen The Terminal. You really feel for his character in the movie. He was awesome as Forrest Gump. I have liked almost every thing he has done.

Yes, I have seen The Terminal. One of the reasons he stays overrated is movies like these and Cast Away = strictly underwhelming 'drama'. He's not the kind of actor who has anything left to say, he's turned into a casting-standard. Very much like Johnny Depp. And Forrest Gump was one overlong series of really bad jokes.

Tom Cruise seems more overexposed than overrated. To be overexposted you need to have nearly every celebrity news report be about you, even if you're not a good actor. To be overrated you need to be a fairly decent actor with a helluva lot of people fawning over you with very little people against you (or a majority of people against you simply because they want to be different). Cruise gets half and half of that (you either love him or hate him), while Hanks has more people in his favor than against (more people love him than hate him). I'm more of an early Cruise fan. Don't know what he's been smoking the past 10 years, but his movies pre-Jerry Maguire were at least halfway decent (Legend of course always being my favorite simply because he's so...bad in it)

I think the last movie I actually enjoyed Hanks in (Toy Story 1 and 2 notwithstanding) was Catch Me If You Can, which itself was pretty mediocre.
