Walt Disney Treasures Wave 6 Discussion

This is just my opinion.

I really love the old disneyland tv shows. I used to vhs tape them years ago when they showed overnight on the disney channel. I really like to look at those old shows of walt showing the world the latest changes in the park.

That said, I don't think that there will be another treasure of disneyland shows. It seems to me that this has been the slowest selling of any treasure. They are still for sell. You see them sometimes at the theme parks, and I think I saw them at the movie club.

Since that was the first release, maybe they made more of them than the have made of releases in the later waves, so maybe they think they could sell them. But I don't expect another one to come along.

Also, I think that another "rarities" set might include the three "chip and dale" shorts, like the first one included the two "humphrey bear" shorts. That way there wouldn't be a chip and dale disc. But who knows. Something tells me that if they think they can sell them they will make them. There are also a couple of Figaro shorts.

Disney is supposedly releasing an Academy Award Winning/Nominated Shorts DVD Boxed Set in the summer (although it probably won't be a part of the Treasures line proper)

That's a good news! I do hope we'll get a better, anamorphic transfer of the widescreen films, like Grand Canyon.

The same goes for The Chronological Donald: the CinemaScope cartoons should be released in anamorphic format, not letterboxed as it was done in Disney Rarities.

Wave 5 has come and gone; and I'm already looking forward to Wave 6. I suppose it will be another long wait until December 2006 before we get more tins.

Any word on what will be included in WD Treasures Wave 6?

True Life Adventures has been rumored for some time and is always a possibility.

I seem to recall awhile back that Song of the South was rumored for a Treasures release as well (as opposed to a separate "60th Anniversary Edition" that's also rumored). I guess it makes sense as the best way to release the movie while also dealing with the controversy that surrounds the film.

What you would like to see as part of the next WD Treasures wave?

I had promised some info on the Wave 6 contents last week. As said, there are four boxes in this set. All four have been "locked" in terms of the overall theme. Three are all set, with the fourth still undergoing some research. It's a TV related box, and basically what is holding up the final word is going through the various masters available and making sure that good quality transfers can be located. Unfortunately, some of the older shows have been cut over the years for various reasons, including the removal of Walt's intros for use on The Disney Channel. The goal is to get the shows 100% like they were when first aired (except for the non-Disney commercials, that being due to rights issues). So, if we were to pick the hypothetical episode "An Adventure in Frontierland", but could only find it without Walt, or only in B&W or edited, the search may shift to "The Mystery of Main Street". Most of the stuff has been found, but until it's actually screened and verified no one wants to set false expectations with a list that might have to be changed at a later date.

Work is proceeding at a fast clip. I taped my segment for one of the firmly locked shows on Saturday, and Leonard Maltin did his piece yesterday. I had the fun of coming up with questions for him to ask his guests, and for factoids on the show itself.

I have to say there are some VERY good guessers on this board! Some of you should be detectives for your deductive reasoning, as some of the guesses are quite good. I will say no "Song of the South" in the Wave 6 titles, and no clue as to what will be the future on that one. No "Zorro" yet either, but progress is being made there.

Sorry to have teased folks on this. I had fully expected to get an OK on Saturday to tell all, but the last minute hang up on source material has slowed things down. I was supposed to tape two segments on Saturday but we only did one, since the other one is still fluid. They've asked me to come back in 2-3 weeks so hopefully things are fully baked then. If anything breaks inbetween I'll let you know.

I have to say there are some VERY good guessers on this board! Some of you should be detectives for your deductive reasoning, as some of the guesses are quite good. Quite a few things have been guessed in this thread so far, but particularly after this I'd say I'll be surprised if we don't get Silly Symphonies, Pluto or perhaps Donald Duck.

As with the inclusion of ALL Spin and Marty serial one episodes, please provide a complete HB serial.

Honestly, I wish either Swamp Fox or Elfego Baca were released in total -- just like Davy Crocket's adventures.

Otherwise, please publish subsequent Treasure volumes to complete the characters' works (like we get with DD, MMLC, MMBW...). I don't "treasure" the thought of having a 3-episode Treasure of Swamp Fox, and having to buy a future standard DVD set for the balance of his shows.

The Mickey Mouse Club is a different story, since it was a weekly show (And really, who wants WDT The Mickey Mouse Club: Week TWO?). Let's just move on to today's standard --and popular-- releases of television seasons on DVD... and I say, "Please!" for the original Mickey Mouse Club!

Yes, totally agree... I don't think these episode titles that are "hypothetical" would necessarily come to someones mind as examples, without recently seeing or talking about them.....

So, I really hope we are right on this one.. I definitely want another Disneyland Treasure !

Ha HA! I KNEW there wouldn't be a SotS!! It really is just too good of a money maker to pass up. I would never even have thought of it as an option for a Treasure.


I also think Hardy Boys is a pretty good option and I stand by my Pluto 2 and Symphonies 2 guesses.

Guesses, hopes, whatever. I think it's fair to say that there aren't really that many options left for the animated sets anyway.

I've never seen the television version of the "Hardy Boys". But I used to read a lot of "Hardy Boys" books, so I'll be looking forward to the TV series if that's what we get.

Well, if we are in fact getting Wave 6 this summer, one could only hope we wouldn't have to wait another 18 months for the next set. My feeling is that we could probably look forward to seeing these released more often than just once a year from here on out. Reasons:

• They're running out of animated material to include in these sets. Our prognostications and predictions are starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel. I could probably count only another 6 legitimate sets (2 more Donalds, another Rarities, a random set with C&D/Minnie/Figaro/etc shorts, perhaps an Oswald set now) or so in addition to the 2 we'll be getting this summer. That being said, the animated sets probably take longer to restore (mostly because there are more of them on one disc than say, only 3 or 4 hour-long episodes of something), so if we're in store for a rash of WD Presents, MMC, Wonderful World of Color, etc., they might be able to crank them out faster.
  
  Sadly, recent experience has led us to expect a cheaper, and in some cases (Donald v.2) a less finishished product, from a packaging AND restoration standpoint. I think Disney has seen the value and hype generated by these sets, and is likely to grab the cash while they can prior to the next-gen format.
  
  The only other time they didn't release a wave during the holidays was when there was a production and distribution problem that delayed a proper release. The fact that Bill Cotter indicates they'll be VOLUNTARILY releasing the next wave this summer makes me believe they'll speed up the schedule to more than one release a year. We might even get Wave 7 in time for Christmas.

That's my $0.02, for what it's worth.

Well, I can hardly imagine they'd release anything but "legitimate" sets... But as for "theatrical" shorts, there could only be a handful of sets left by now.

Minnie? Would that be Minnie Mouse? I'm pretty sure all of her appearances have been covered - or will be when the second Pluto volume is out. No need for excessive double-dipping, is there?

OTOH, I'd be interested in seeing more of the animated material that's got to be "in the vaults". There is more material made for information and educational purposes, including lots for the armed forces during WWII - we got to see some of that in the Front Lines set.

I have heard that only about a Dozen or so of the Disney Oswald Cartoons still exist (about 7 in the Disney/Universal Vaults, and the rest in the hands of Private Collectors), so it would make more sense to just include them in a Rarities Vol. 2 with the remianing Alice Comedies.

Also, are there enough one-shot/misc. Cartoons that aren't Already in the Rarities Vol 1. treasure to warrent another treasure?

Even though the first Goofy Treasure is titled, "The complete Goofy", there are still many Goofy cartoons to make a Goofy vol. 2. They didn't include Goofy's Freeway trouble and Freeway phobia 1 in the first Treasure plus all these modern ones. (Did you know there have been seven voices for Goofy, compared to three for Mickey and only two for Donald.)

Where did you get this information? I doubt that Disney would make a deal for the rights to 26 cartoons if only 12 or so were available. What good are the rights to a completely outdated character, other than the value of releasing its classic material? They certainly won't be making any NEW shorts, so you'd have to think they want this character to own Walt's entire animated canon (and for some light merchandising...possibly a WDCC figurine?).

I would love to own this "Goofy vol 2".

I can't speak for everyone here, but I don't think the Mouse Works produced Goofy shorts qualifiy as "Treasures" to me. I put them in the same bin as the cheapquels.
