Ok

First keep an eye on this thread:

The official UK Disney DVD special offers thread

It will let you know about various 2 for 1 offers, cheap titles available online and special boxsets. If you're going to be collecting, sales and price promotions are your friend.

Secondly, make a list of everything out of print. This is usually the "big" titles, which are released in America under the "platinum" banner.

Out of Print in the UK are (off the top of my head, so I could be wrong, missing some):

Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast
Snow White
Peter Pan
The Little Mermaid
Fantasia/Fantasia 2000/Fantasia Anthology
The Lion King
The Lion King 2
The Lion King 3
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book

If you see any of these, it is probably worth buying them, although don't pay over the odds on something like Ebay.

Thirdly. Have fun, and don't get discouraged if you find certain titles hard to find. It will only make you feel better when you do find one and buy it.

I collect Dr Who stuff, and have all the Dalek annuals apart from The Dalek Outerspace Book and Space Travellers Guide from 1965. I could get it for about £40-£50 on Ebay, but I prefer to continue looking around market stalls and secondhand bookshops. It's more fun that way, and you never know what else you may find!

Well if I was you, I would forget ALL about:

The Little Mermaid
The JungleBook
Lady and The Tramp
101 Dalmatians

They will be released in "near" future as platinum/2-disc SE editions, and the 1st editions are barebone dvd's... unless offvcourse you want all editions of the movies...

There isn't a general rule that I'm aware of, but for Tarzan, the new 2 disc Special edition is the one to go for.

Lots of Disney's new releases are available in double packs too:

Tarzan 2 disc SE/Tarzan II
Lilo and Stitch 2 disc SE/Lilo and Stitch 2
Cinderella/Cinderella 2
etc
Bambi is also going to be available in a boxset with Bambi II

Its worth getting these, as they can be picked up quite cheap if you shop around (they're less than £22 from Sainsburys for example).

they're the same, apart from one little thing which may bother you. They don't come with slipcovers if part of a 2 or 3 pack.

Judging from my Toy Story/Toy Story 2 box set, it seems as though they are pretty much the same.

And I agree with mostly what 2099net said. Also, I'd order online a lot, as the prices will probably be cheaper than in your local HMV (though many traditional shops are starting to get cheaper). I'd also at first stick to things that are more likely to disappear (the ones that Netty listed, as well as Bambi, Lady and the Tramp and Cinderella), the 2 disc editions (including the cartoon collections known as Walt Disney Treasures, which are only £5.99 on Play.com) and other things that you know that you really like.

Oh, whilst OOP, Aladdin is still available at Sendit.com. I'd get it now if I were you!

Another sidenote: I have some titles that 2099net forgot to mention The Fox and the Hound, 101 Dalmatians 2, The Jungle Book 2, Sleeping Beauty (both the mediocre 1 disc edition and the highly recommended 2 discer) and the 2 disc editions of Dinosaur, The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Monsters Inc and A Bug's Life have gone to the vault.

If I was you I'd take a little look here.

Not sure how much longer the offers on for, but you're not going to find the titles they have available in the offer anywhere cheaper. Also look out for the 3 disc set. Try searching for one under Mary Poppins, the other under dumbo.

Happy collecting.

I've only been trying to collect the animated classics on dvd (collectors/special editions where possible) since November. I must say I've found it frustrating at times although I think I've done pretty well. Fortunately I already had a few titles, such as Lion King SE and Aladdin SE, before my feverish obsession began. When I pick up Lady and the Tramp next week I will have acquired 35 of the 44 classics (all brand new and sealed).

I guess it's all about perseverence and be vigilant. I've spent hour after hour trawling all the various dvd websites and found many bargains to be had. Blah dvd in particular were very good before christmas where I managed to pick up numerous titles for as little as £7.99. Some of the other titles were a bit more difficult to come by. For instance I ordered Emperor's New Groove Ultimate groove edition and Atlantis CE a number of times from various sites that said they were available only to be knocked back due to unavailabilty, then bizarrely just after christmas I happened to notice that powerplay direct's site was showing as having 1 copy left of Atlantis. Having already been knocked back twice by them I phoned up to check and they did have it in stock. Emperor's new groove UGE I picked up from a pivate seller on amazon for £15 brand new!!! Well I'm assuming it was brand new as it was sealed and in mint condition so frankly I'm not fussed either way.

Sleeping Beauty DE was another I just happened to stumble across on amazon when it had previously been unavailable, all of a sudden they had 'only 3 copies left in stock' which I ordered immediately. I checked back a couple of hours later and the other 2 had gone. I did think about buying them and selling the others on but my conscience wouldn't allow it! Not quite sure why Amazon had these 3 copies available all of a sudden but needless to say I was delighted to get my hands on that title as it's not back on release for quite a while.

So at the moment I am missing Snow White, Fantasia, Peter Pan, 101 Dalmations, Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Fantasia 2000.

What to do next? I'm not sure really. It transpired last week that my sister had all those titles on VHS so me and my daughter won't have to completely go without as I made her do the honorable Auntie thing and let us borrow them indefinitely however these videos are over 15 years old and the picture and sound leaves a lot to be desired. I couldn't even record them on to dvd for the time being as they are all copy protected.

So my options now are as follows:

1. Tolerate VHS and wait for the official releases - no chance!
2. Spend ridiculous amounts purchasing them from private sellers on Amazon - Again no because I've already spent more than I would have liked on a couple of other titles.
3. e-bay - Well I'm contemplating going down this route but it really is a sea of rip off merchants and dishonesty on there. It's not that long a wait for some of the titles I'm missing but I'm already regretting not snapping up Beauty and the Beast for £30 the other day. The seller had gone to great lengths to display the quality of what he was selling. Today when I looked it was all dodgy copies without holograms and asian imports.

I'll keep going though.

Just as an after thought I reckon dvd shops at airports might be worth people thinking about. I saw a copy of Aladdin the other week.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention Make Mine Music. Will we ever see this get a release? :x

I agree the number one piece of advice is buy the movies you personally like and enjoy. I just started collecting a month ago. While this applies to my US experience, much of it applies to UK market also.

1) I decided my goal would be to acquire the complete Platinum Collection and the Treasures Collection.

2) In cases where there is a Collector Gift Set (Alladin, Lion King, Cinderella) I definitely went for those even though those are not necessarily my favorite movies, the Gift Sets are nicer to have for the modest extra cost.

3) I found finding Treasures Tins with absolutely no dings, dents, or impressions is VERY hard. I've gone through three and four iterations of purchasing and returning or re-selling just to find a perfect tin.

4) I decided I would NOT leave my collection sealed. Ya I know this is a NO NO for true collectability but I decided this for several reasons. A) Most if not all these titles will most likely be re-released in a higher-definition DVD format (aka Blu Ray) starting in about 3-4 years is my guess. While the original releases will still have appeal, it's not like they are vinyl records that they only made 100,000 of. Aside from Treasures, they were all MASS produced, at least a million, so it's not like they are limited editions with serial numbers and will be worth thousands of dollars 10 years from now sealed or not - at least that's my guess. B) You get more enjoyment out of your collection if you can at least pull it off the shelf and look at the inserts. C) It is too much work and/or money to buy two of everything, especially if you are trying to collect EVERYTHING. D) I've got two young kids that destroy DVDs. So I simply create a backup copy using my Dual-Layer burner ($2 a disc and about 5 minutes of manual work and 30 minutes of encoding and burning) and never play the originals so they remain in mint condition. If the kids destroy one of the DVDs I can carefully make another copy for them to play. Can't make a backup copy from a sealed package.

5) I caught the bug to some extent and determined there are some releases that are not part of the Platinum Collection that should be added to my collection for nostalgia purposes (and collectability), namely: Fantasia Anthology (open your wallet for this one!), Alice in Wonderland Masterpiece, Dumbo 60th, the Collectors Versions of Tarzan, New Groove, and Atlantis, Toy Story Toy Box (and the new improved versions), and Tron Anniversary. I got them because I like the movies and consider most of them milestones in Disney's history. I also like any movies that are represented well at Disney Theme Parks as I am a Disneyand FANATIC.

I'm considering adding Nemo 2-disc to my collection, but I really think Toy Story is much more of a milestone for Disney released Computer Generated Animation. Nemo is great, but I remember the first time I saw Toy Story and could not believe my eyes.

Shortly after writing my post, I decided to expand and get the entire animated classic collection so I could see them all in chronological order on my shelf. I don't think I'll ever collect the live action movies, although I do have TRON but I could be saying the same thing as you in a few years. ;)
