Just so you all know Disney has updated the specs for Pirates Of The Caribbean dvd and it now says the region 01 dvd will also have DTS sound.

Hmm...interesting find. They also say that for The Santa Clause 2, and I'm pretty sure that's not correct. But this they say both DTS and DD, so it's possible. Of course, a 143 minute movie with multiple commentaries and both DD and DTS seems a bit iffy. It certainly CAN be done, but quality could suffer.

Yay! The addition of DTS here in Region 1 makes this set truly complete in my eyes --it has everything I could ever want pretaining to the film. Some stuff about the ride would be cool, but this set seems to be mainly focused on the film, which is just fine.
A DTS track can work with multiple commentaries. The Lord of the Rings extended editions have four commentaries, multiple DD tracks (I think it has 2.0 and 5.1) and DTS. True, in that case, the movie is split over two discs, but four commentaries and three audio options is still an awful lot to cram on one disc even if it only houses half the feature, and the quality is absolute refrence. I believe that the same will be true with Pirates of the Carribbean.

Honestly, they don't have to. I have the German Resident Evil disc which as 2 DTS ES soundtracks and 2 Dolby 5.1 soundtracks, plus a Dolby 2.0 commentary track.
And it still looks beter than the US Special Edition.
Granted, it's a shorter film than Pirates, but all this talk of "cramming" soundtracks on just shows how brainwashed general consumers are. But look at Gangs of New York - Buena Vista split this over two discs in the US (supposedly to 'justify' the DTS track) but the UK release had the DTS track and was encoded on one disc and, reportedly looked better than the US release).
Put it this way, the Resident Evil bitrate never falls below 9.2 throughout the movie and often is marked as 9.8-10. Even the so-called 'superbit' discs tend to hover around 7.5. Simply put, any studio can offer high quality picture and multiple soundtracks with no loss of quality. Most don't because it suits them to make people think that they can't.
If something does have to give, I wouldn't be surprised if Pirates was split over 2 discs.

According to the DVD spec, the maximum bitrate for a DVD is just over 10. (10.2 I think)
However, some DVD players do have trouble playing high-bitrate discs. I have a cheap player in our bedroom which sometimes freezes the picture for half a second or so. I have noticed it only does this on discs with high-bitrates (although it doesn't freeze at the same points if the disc is replayed, so I think it must also have something to do with the buffers).
But any DVD player which conforms to the DVD spec should be able to play a DVD with a bitrate of 10.2 with no problems.

Pardon my ignorance, but if I recall correctly the US release will not have DTS, correct? So why is it that we continually see a DTS track on other region releases? I cannot imagine that those in charge think it's not an important feature here in the States.
