Fantasia was cut? Why? I could've sworn the only Disney movie to recive cuts was The Three Caballeros. Unless there are more films that I'm not aware about.

I think both Fantasia and Make Mine Music are cut, but I am not sure.

Actually, there are several Animated Classics that were "edited for content" (but one of them wasn't Three Caballeros as a previous poster mentioned). Chronologically, the first was the Pastoral Symphony scene in Fantasia. Next was the removal of Goofy's cigarette in Saludos Amigos. The Martins & Coys segment was removed completely from Make Mine Music, and Pecos Bill had his Marlboro digitized out in Melody Time. Oh, and don't forget the complete and absolute censoring of Song of the South. I won't open up Pandora's Box by getting into my feelings on Disney's "protecting" of our sensibiliies, but buyers should know what they're getting into. Read Luke's reviews if you're interested in exactly what was cut or altered and why.

Also, there's the infamous nude woman in The Rescuers (granted, it's an "approved" censorship, as it never should have been there in the first place), and the DVD edits of Aladdin and The Lion King.

If by censoring, you mean keeping the movie unavailable for consumers, then yes, "Song of the South" suffered a 94-minute censorship. But I'm scratching my head trying to figure out if anything was deleted in the movie and that being considered censorship.

As for the original question, I'd say rent it first, EGJ. Fantasia isn't for everyone, so you may not want to spend $25 on a movie that you may end up not enjoying. If you enjoy it enough to get the current edition, then go for it.

Well, it is not a matter of if end up liking it or not. In fact, I rented it once (at the same Blockbuster and had so many scratches that I couldn't see much of it), and liked it; I mean, there's a reason why I have Fantasia 2000.

So in the end this is a movie I'd get in one way or another. What I want to know is if it worth it to spend that money in this version, taking in cosideration the video transfer and the audio. As for the censored scene, I read once about it here and it really doesn't bother me since it is just that scene and I'm not a fan of the movie.

What I know for sure is that if I get this version I will not buy the PE.

So, what do you suggest?

PS

Funny how it IS censored and the cover says: "The Original Uncut Version".

Yes, it IS confirmed!

After "101 Dalmatians" is released, there will be 4 new platinums: Pinocchio, Fantasia, Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty.

As for the topic, I'd wait for the PE. I mean after all, it could be an UNedited version!
Is Fantasia 2000 also going to be re-released when the PE of Fantasia comes out?

"Platinum" is just a word. The 2-Disc Sleeping Beauty SE that we have might as well be a Platinum (even though it's supposedly going to be re-released as an official "Platinum"). Who knows what Disney means when they say that a movie is being added to the Platinum line-up? Fantasia will surely be revisited in a 2-Disc DVD set, regardless of what title it's given. In the meantime, I'll just give the advice that I'm following for myself: if you find the anthology for a low price, pick it up, but otherwise hold off with rentals unless you find the 1-discer for really cheap used or if you just can't wait.

Well, I'm not interested in the third disc... and as I said I already have 2000. What holds me the most is the price. I mean is it that worth it? Because with the rerelease it will have 2 discs and THEN that price would be justified.

So, the answer is yes.

IMO, that third disc is easily worth the price of the whole set. But that's just me... :)

If a Platinum edition of Fantasia is going to be released, then I'll be patient and wait. I still have my 14 year old VHS tape too....

I think $25 is a good price for a brand new copy of Fantasia. You should buy it before someone else beats you to it.

Well, it was in the store for several months... then it was gone (I figured someone bought it) but since I found it back.... then it should mean that it was the same copy, probably they put it in storage for some reason I brought it back.

.............
Well, I just bought it.

Better off buying it now than to later regret it.

Thank you all.

PS

This reduces my list of the four added PE to just 2 (I'm not going to buy Peter Pan either; I'm quite happy with the SE)

Which Toy Story to Buy Now?

Post by consultant »

It seems Toy Story would be a good collectors item since it represents really the first major movie using the awesome new graphics technology and it is Disney's first computer animation movie.

While it seems that the 3-disc Toy Box is possibly the most collectible of all the releases, it appears the 10th Anniversary release is actually a superior product since it has remastered picture and sound and higher bit rate plus a game which the toy box doesn't have.

I guess the short answer is if you are a big Toy Story Fan you should own the Toy Box, the 10th Anniversary, and the new Toy Story 2 Special Edition (although I think Toy Story 2 is much much less collectible since it is a sequel and doesn't represent Disney's landmark first computer animation release.)

Well, its debateble which is the better release. The lack of the Pixar shorts on the new releases are a huge minus point in my eyes, and overall, the Toy Box does have a few supplements not on the new releases, such as all the toy story treats and better galleries.

However the new releases have some new supplements - Toy Story 1 more so than Toy Story 2, but I don't get excited by a game or two.

Personally, I prefer the Toy Box release, mainly for the galleries and the packaging. If you want a collectable, I would still try to track this down.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

First, if we're talking about Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and the upcoming Cars, they are not Disney films. They are Pixar films, and merely distributed by Disney.

Second, if we're talking from a "collector's" point of view, I wouldn't dismiss Toy Story 2 simply because it's a sequel. It's perhaps one of the best films that can follow up an already spectacular film, while at the same time is wonderful as a standalone movie. If we were to dismiss every film just because it's a sequel, then "true" collector's shouldn't have The Godfather II, The Empire Strikes Back, The Wrath of Khan, Ghostbusters 2, The Rescuers Down Under, etc. in their collections.

That said, I'd go for the 2-disc editions that are already out there, merely because of the availability. The Toy Box was a great set, I'm sure, but why pay more for something readily available for less? Yes, you lose the Pixar short. Yes, you lose a few worthwhile bonus features (the sound-effects track, more Toy Story Treats, some galleries, and a couple featurettes). Yes, you lose the superior cover art and the convenience of them all in one box. But ask yourself this: Are you collecting for the movie or for the bonus features? If it's the latter, then go ahead and spend $100+ for an out-of-print boxset. Otherwise, just shell out $40 for the two movies at your local Wal-Mart or Target or wherever you shop.

I checked UD's Toy Story review and found that if you go ahead with the two special editions, you'll miss out on the following from the Toy Box:

- Pixar's 1988 short Tin Toy (5:10)
- the sound-effects only soundtrack
- two text-based original story treatments from 1991 and 1993, with John Lasseter intro
- one of two Character Interviews with Buzz and Woody (1:50)
- the featurettes "History & Development" (3:40), "Character Animation" (4:35), "Shaders and Lighting" (2:17 plus galleries), "Building a Shot" (1:18)
- many stills of art and photos from the galleries (which are here converted to slideshows)
- Early Animation Tests and Modeling featurettes for several characters
- production notes from the film
- biographies of the cast and Randy Newman
- a text section on "Editing"
- Special Effects test footage and progression plus galleries
- 7 "Render Bugs" clips
- Supplement Disc's intro (expected since it doesn't entirely apply here, but nothing replaces it)
- Early Animation Test (No separate listing is given for this memorable 32-second test, but most of it appears in "Making Toy Story")

So if those bonus features are worth the extra $60+, go for it.

It appears the 3-disc sets are going for $30-$60 on E-bay. I saw some old posts throwing out numbers like $100. Did the price drop because of the release of the 10th Anniversary and the Special Edition Toy Story 2. Would make sense to me seems these things have sort of a Bell Curve. They start out low, brand new, sell out and the prices go nuts initially, then a few years later Disney decides they want to make some more money so they release a new edition (be it Platinum, Special, Anniversay, Collectors, or Blu Ray) and then the prices jump down on the original releases.

I own the original release, the two pack, the UTB and the anniversary editions. My favorite is the UTB by far because of the packaging.
