Most disappointing album/CD in your collection?

Post by 2099net »

While I purchase any DVD which takes my fancy on a whim (more or less) for some reason I'm very picky when it comes to getting CDs. I don't know why.

Once, a long time ago in the dim and distant 1990's, I purchased Great Expectations by Tasmin Archer on one of my whims. It turned out to be a stunning album and easily one of the 10 best CDs I own. Even now, it gets constant play on my MP3 player. (Sleeping Satellite, Lords of the New Church and Halfway to Heaven being the best tracks).

I was so impressed, I immediately bought her next album the day it was released... big mistake. Bloom, for that is what it is, is a terrible CD. I can honestly say that there's now one single track on it that appeals to me. I can't understand how two albums, released in close succession can be so different.

So, what's your worst CD purchase?

I'm usually very careful as to what I'll go and buy, but one time I was looking for a large collection of music from the 60s. I happened to find a three-disc album from Target and when I put it on at home I discovered that most of the songs were recent studio recordings done by artists that were supposed to sound like the originals. :x Guess the originals weren't good enough for this company! (And I don't have that collection anymore.)

With soundtracks I read reviews before I go out and try to find them. I was going to buy the Ice Age soundtrack by David Newman but once I saw all the bad reviews of it (because of Universal's cheapskate marketing) I didn't bother because they only put about thirty minutes worth of orchestration and they didn't even put in the lone song: On My Way by Rusted Root. Must've been too easy for Universal to make a good soundtrack off a successful film.

Not a CD but still Craptular

About 13 years ago, I wanted to purchase a single (the old 45" records) of Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas I searched all the second hand stores in the area for a copy because I realized Carl was a one hit wonder and he released nothing else good.

I found a record call "Do The Kung Fu" for $3.00 and thought this title does match the song exactly. But I asked myself:

How many songs could somebody sing about Kung Fu Fighting?

Well, I was wrong and it was a terrible song and I wasted $3.00. On the other hand, six months later I did find a 45" of Kung Fu Fighting for $.50 so not all was lost.

Since I am very careful what I buy, I usually make sure I know the artist or at least something about him or her before I buy the product. I would say that of the 2800 CD's that I own, there is not a real turkey in the bunch. If I were pinned down to pick one that I don't play on a somewhat regular basis I would probably have to say that it would be my "Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace" Soundtrack CD. Since I really bought for The Who's performance, I only listen to that part of the soundtrack, so I would consider that one to be the CD that I neglect the most.

I have such a varied taste in music, Rock all the way to Light Classics, and everything inbetween. I like country music, most styles of jazz, and big band music of the 30s, 40s and 50s.

What kind of music do I dislike the most, probably heavy Opera, and spaced-out jazz. I don't listen to much of that, and haven't ever purchased any of it.

My favorite artists would include The Who, Disturbed, Metallica, Mariah Carey, Rascal Flatts, Garth Brooks, Harry Connick Jr., The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Tragically Hip, Incubus, and just about any soft-rock or instrumental you can come up with. I am pretty easy to please with music.

Well I have bought over 1,500 CDs in my life(currently have a little over 1,000) I think of artists who had really good initial albums and then followed it up with terrible ones.

Two that come to mind are Outfield - Diamond Days and the Spin Doctors second album(don't remember the name). Also the Cutting Crew's Greatest Hits. Thought that I just Died in Your Arms tonight was a decent pop song(and it was) but the rest of the album was putrid. Seventy minutes of hell.

I liked the music in "The Road to El Dorado" enough to get the soundtrack when I saw it on a clearance rack, (though the movie itself wasn't really any good). I was pretty disappointed to find out when I listened to it that they didn't use the film versions of most of the songs. It wasn't really even a soundtrack. It's pretty lame (though still not as lame as the film).

Well I received a Vanessa Williams CD for Christmas, either '97 or '98, and I didn't much care for that one. The one with "Happiness", which is a song I really liked at the time.

I've been holding off posting this for a while, but I think I've listened to the discs for long enough now. I hate to say it, but I am most disappointed with Kate Bush's comeback CD - Aerial. :(

Its a shame because I really like Kate Bush, and there are a few good tracks on the CDs, but the sum of the tracks just doesn't work. I was hoping repeated play may turn me around, but I'm still just a unsatisfied.

I hate to admit these kind of things because I *GASP* had to pay for these things. I try to like them...

But I was hoping I would love Jamie Cullum's debut CD. But to me, it's more of a snoozefest. I like jazz, but I guess it just needs to be more big band-type and energetic...... actually that's not really always true. What I probably mean is that they need to be more *catchy*.

I was also disappointed with Celine Dion's "One Heart". I LOVE the title track, but the other songs just aren't as catchy as One Heart. :-(

Roger, how much did you pay for that CD? :?

I have the same problem, too. In fact, a few years ago I was looking for Herman's Hermits and Bill Haley & The Comets CD from a flea market. Unfortunately, these CDs were recent studio recordings that doesn't sound like originals. I can blame to the companies who done that. Well, both CDs are about $5 each so I can put it into the junk box and never to be heard again. :x

As for the other albums in my collection, I don't have a problem with it.

Much agreed. I was/am a huge Celine fan and to me, "One Heart" was the most disappointing album. Plus, two of the songs were on her previous cd. I'm sorry, she can't do dance music, at least not imo. She should stick to ballads.

Papa Roach - Infest... why the hell did I buy it edited?
I'm not into them anymore so this album isn't really a disappointment anymore... it was when I first got it but not anymore. I don't even listen to it or them anymore. :P

I don't have many, but my Lion King SE Soundtrack was pretty disappointing. There was hardly any score. Most of it was remixes and inclusion of new songs. On the upside, the few scores that were available were some of my favourites ever!

Lion King 1 1/2... the only song worth listening to on that CD (IMO) is "That's All I Need" by Timon. Well "Hakuna Matata" is obviously good, but it's on the Lion King soundtrack too...
But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.

Wow, I really liked that album. Maybe it's because Aerial is my introduction to Kate Bush, but I thought it was one of the stronger albums of last year. I'm usually not into the new age/celtic thing (most of it is cheap elevator music), but I thought this album succeeded on several merits, mainly its songwriting and unique vocal delivery. :)

The worst/disappointing CD I have? I'm not really sure. I was going to say that all of NSync's CDs would be the worst/disappointing CDs I've had but I can't do that. They were popular at one time and the fact that I still have all of their CDs and ocasionally listen to them from time to time means something. There really isn't a particular CD I've bought that was bad. I think I have good taste in music. I kno what I like and I stick to it. Espically with food, but we're talking about music. Hehe. Anyways. So, I don't have any disappointing CDs in my collection. Embarassing CDs, yes. I have all of Hanson's CDs. Their music has changed since their MMMBop days and for the better. They now have their own record label and are able to take complete control over their music and their career- not that it's really going anywhere. But, I guess I would classify Hanson as my embarassing CDs. It's funny to listen to the songs you grew up with and you go back to that exact time in your life and you relive that moment, good or bad, all over again. It's kind of bitersweet and happy at the same time. You miss that time in your life but you've moved on and you grew up but you won't ever forget the people or the places or the music of your life.

OMG, I know exacty what you mean. When I listen to music I've already heard before, I go back to the time of when I first heard it. It feels so good to put in a song that I first listened to just before going to Myrtle Beach, SC for a few weeks during the 4th of July 2003 and I listened to them while I was there.

And yes, there is definitely some music that takes me back to some of the worst times in my life, but funny it doesn't stop me from playing them.

(I love the new Hanson CD. I never even bothered listening to their previous work, don't want to. LOL. Are they going to work on a new album?)

I'm not sure if they're working on a new album. Their newest one, Hanson:Live&Electric which is their best, was released last October 11th, 2005 and it was a year after their first independent release, Underneath, back in 2004. I don't know. I was on a Hanson web site and someone mentioned that they met Hanson and that one of the guys from Hanson said that instead of playing small little club type places this year, they're playing at festivals. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, you can't really trust anyone anymore, so, if thats true, all I can say to them is GOOD LUCK! I mean, they'll have fans there but NOT everyone there is going to be rejoicing and jumping for joy that Hanson is playing at a festival. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Hanson, but if that really is true about them playing festivals, I just don't think it's a good idea. They've been playing small intimate places for like 5 years now and all of a sudden they want to go big again and play festivals???

Um, Hanson does play in small venues, and, to my knowledge, they haven't done festivals.

And, their latest CD, "The Walk" came out last month- it's amazing!!!

The most disappointing CD in my collection is Beyonce's "Dangerously In Love". I really like the singles and 1 or 2 other songs, but the rest of the album either stinks (Track 4- "Superstar" or something) or is so boring I can't even listen to it (all the slow songs in the middle of the album). Since it's so bad, I've been debating whether or not to get her newest album. I like all the singles from that, except for "Ring the Alarm", but I don't know if there are boring slow songs on it.
