Favorite Disney short?

Post by Timon/Pumbaa fan »

Since this thread hasn't been done before, I think it would be cool for us to list our favorite shorts.

Mine would have to be Donald's Ostrich! 7 minutes of comedy brilliance!

Mickey's Trailer- Ever since I was little, I've loved it. Now if only I got the Mickey in Color V.1 treasure when it first came out, I'd be in business.

Lonesome Ghosts I just really love the cartoons that feature Mickey, Donald and Goofy together and Lonesome Ghosts is my favorite of the Mickey,Donald,Goofy cartoons. I just love Goofy's reaction when he see's one of the ghosts in the mirror: "I know you, you're a ghost!" Great stuff!

There are so many that I watch over and over, but I am drawn to Trailer Horn starring Donald Duck and Chip 'n' Dale. This one never fails to make me laugh. A really good second choice is the aforementioned "Lonesome Ghosts".

My favorite disney animated short is "Hawaiian Holiday".
I would've put "The Lonesome Ghosts", but Donald's skirt on fire steals it away. It's pure comedy, I tell ya. Otherwise, "The Lonesome Ghosts" receives an honorable mention for being my second favorite.

Here's a list of some of my favourite shorts...

A Symposium on Popular Songs
An interesting blend of stop motion and traditional animation, and I love the songs, especially the 50s style song, even if the lyrics are a little disturbing.

Nifty Nineties
A charming piece of whimsy with some lovely animation.

Modern Inventions
A funny short that stands out in my mind for some reason or another.

Donald Applecore
I like Chip n' Dale, and the chemistry between them and Donald is magic.

In Dutch
Aw. Even though I have mixed feelings on dogs, I like this short.

The Little House
This is a cute little piece, and is rather touching.

Lambert the Sheepish Lion
Same as above.

The Three Little Pigs
Even though an eight and a half minute piece from the early '30s that would normally have just been left to rot in the vault after it first came out, it sometimes gets as remembered as classics like Snow White and Pinocchio. That's a good sign.

Music Land
Another beautiful short with a lovely sense of unity.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Yes, it's part of an anthology feature, but it has been released seperately and I think it deserves a mention as it is just amazing.

Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day
Same as above. The Many Adventures featurettes are frankly one of the only good fruits of Disney's Pooh exploitations.

Donald Applecore
Yes I'm a huge CnD fan (check the avatar) and this one is just the most inane, daft and funny of the lot between them and Donald.

How to play Football
It takes a lot to make my brother laugh. If this short has him creasing up with laughter, it must be doing something right. Even as Brits, we know the ins and outs of the "other" football game ;)

Symphony Hour
The Macaroni Symphony Hour... Macaroni Disaster Hour more like. How to fit as many visual gags into the end 4 minutes as possible after the first 4 minutes is played completely straight. As Goofy would say... "Gosh...!".
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

Wow: there are so many good shorts it's hard to single out less than a dozen, isn't it?

Favorite Mickey shorts: Magician Mickey, The Brave Little Tailor, Mickey & the Beanstalk and Thru the Mirror.

Favorite short I first viewed in an educational context: Toot, Whistle, Plunk & Boom. Runner-up: Rite of Spring from Fantasia, which was shown in some science class to illustrate the life & demise of the dinosaurs. (Couldn't show it in any of the schools in my neighborhood today, sadly.)

Favorite Silly Symphonies: The Old Mill, The Skeleton Dance, and Music Land.

Favorite Donald shorts: Der Fuehrer's Face and Modern Inventions.

Favorite Goofy short: How to Dance.

Favorite overall short: any of the segments that make up The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

I'm a real fogie, I admit. I'd be happy to sit in front of the TV and watch Mickey in black & white for hours without moving from the sofa (curse the lack of "play all" option on Mickey in B & W Vol. 1!)

I really enjoy Music Land, one of the spledid Silly Symphonies that Leonard Maltin chose for the Disney Treasures. It is perfect with it use of musical instruments, notation and peripherals that constitute the entire visuals of the short. The use of the competing sounds of symphonic versus jazz is excellent. The storyline is also quite appealing and captivating and the happy ending simply perfect. Well worth several viewings.

There are many in our family that pop up daily in the way we speak and little songs we sing. Some include:

The Wise Little Hen
The Grasshopper and the Ants
The Skeleton Dance

huh, all Silly Symphonies . . .

I too have to go with Lonesome Ghosts - I just have incredibly fond memories of it from childhood. I still think it stands up today as a great short and I watch it often.

At Christmas I'm a real sucker for Mickey's Christmas Carol, I love what Chris Bailey did with Runaway Brain (I'm a fan of Chris and even own some original art by him!) and as a Tim Burton fan I love Vincent... but yeah Lonesome Ghosts is my all-time favorite short!

My word, there are just so many brilliant shorts, for now I will just list my favourite Mickey Cartoons as he is often overlooked and he is often seen as second rate to the donald or goofy series or the silly symphonies, but there are some absolute crackers! Here are my main favourites.

Steamboat Willie - 1928

I'm not just saying this because it came first, but I really like the short. It is so iconic and just so charming. There is a kind of care free, look what we can do feel to it, and rather than having much of a story like later Mickey Mouse shorts do, this one seems to be about enjoying the fact that the music is synchronized with the pictures!

The Whoopee Party - 1932

I love this short, again it has a feel of whimsy. I love the fact that it is just about Mickey and Minnie having fun with all those musical instruments.

Camping Out - 1934

I love this because the stars of this cartoon are Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow and it is really nice to see them get to take the lead for once. Yes they have had more space devoted to them in recent years in pieces such as The Prince and the Pauper, House of Mouse and The Three Musketeers, but it's nice to see them having such heavy parts in the classic shorts, when they don't appear that much!

Mickey's Streamroller - 1934

I adore the sweetness of the short. Mickey gets so embarassed around Minnie, and i love the part where Mickey gives her the candy hearts. Also the animation in the short is astounding!

Two-Gun Mickey - 1934

i actually have a beanie of Minnie from the short in her cowboy gear! This short just has everything, Minnie the i can do it by myself headstrong cowgirl gets into a predicament with Pete and Mickey saves her from danger. A classic!

Mickey's Rival - 1936

Aside from the fact that this short has such an entertaining story, where Mickey has to fight for Minnie's attention, there is so much history behind it including the name choice for Mortimer and the alleged fact that his design was based upon Walt.

Mickey's Amateurs - 1937

Simply a great ensemble piece, it's got everyone in it! And Clarabelle Cow and Clara Cluck's performance is hilarious.

The Pointer - 1939

This is THE ULTIMATE Mickey cartoon IMO. Mickey underwent a huge number of character designs over the years, but this is one of the few shorts where he looks spot on, the perfect design. Also the "acting" in the short is sublime! And the shadowing on the faces and the detailing of the forest is to die for!

Mickey's Surprise Party - 1939

I love the friendliness in this short between Mickey and Minnie and as I said above, this is one of the few shorts where Mickey looks perfect!

Mr Mouse Takes a Trip - 1940

One word - Genius!

Mickey's Birthday Party - 1942

Again, i like seeing all the gang together!

Symphony Hour - 1942

One of the funniest Disney shorts ever produced, The orchestra falling about into chaos and Peter as Sylvester Macaroni getting more and more frustrated is just brilliant.[/b]

It is very difficult for me to choose ONE FAVORITE short, because the Disney animated shorts have always been my number one hobby interest most of my life.

But, if I have to choose just one, I choose the Silly Symphony HELL'S BELLS. Hopefully, there will eventually be a volume two of the Silly Symphonies for the Walt Disney Treasures and this short will be included. This is just a fun, weird, technically outstanding short that I still never tire of watching again and again.

Other shorts are very close seconds: PIGS IS PIGS, BAND CONCERT, MICKEY'S MELLERDRAMMER, THE LITTLE HOUSE, THE SKELETON DANCE, and THE OLD MILL. But there are numerous other top favorites, such as both UGLY DUCKLING shorts, the World War II themed shorts DER FUEHRER'S FACE and COMMANDO DUCK, and FERDINAND THE BULL.

The Silly Symphony shorts and the Specials shorts are generally my favorites - I generally enjoy them more than the "character" shorts, such as Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, etc.

I'm glad other people couldn't decide on just one!

One's I go back to over and over:
Mickey's Trailer
Steamboat Willie
Building a Building
Hawaiian Holiday
Mr. Duck Steps Out
Two Chips and a Miss
Donald Applecore
Donald's Snow Fight
Mickey's Birthday Party
....you know what....I can't ever pick just a few.

I love all the Chip n Dale appearances, and Huey, Duey & Louie....and when the whole gang is together!

The Best Shorts

Post by DisneyPrincess »

My Favorite are:

Lonesome Ghosts

Seeing the gang as ghost chasers is great. I loved watching this as an intro to "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"

A Good Time For a Dime

Donald Duck goes to a carnival and tries different things for a dime. He watches the ladies dance, he tries to catch a toy with the claw only to be sprayed in the face with ink and then he decides to ride a toy airplane, only it doesn't work quite right! It is hilarious to tears.

Pluto's Christmas Tree

Poor Pluto doesn't want Chip and Dale in his Christmas tree! Mickey can't understand why Pluto won't stay away, and Chip and Dale just want to enjoy the candy canes! This one is a classic I watch each year.

A Lesson in Skiing
Goofy gets a lesson in skiing, only it doesn't go quite right.

Trick Or Treat

I also liked watching this before The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The nephews want to get back at their stingy Uncle Donald for not giving them Halloween candy, so they enlist the help of the local witch to give Donald a taste of his own medicine.
