One of my favorite animated films. I own it on the 1998 VHS edition. I am holding out on DVD because I am hoping that it gets a special edition, however that is unlikely.

I'm a completist too, so I own the dvd. I bought it as a blind buy, and I actual enjoy
watching the movie. It's not one of my favorites, but I do like it more than some of
the other animated classics. I do feel that The Black Cauldron is under-appreciated.

I have the Gold Collection dvd of Black Cauldron. While it doesn't look or feel like what we think of as a traditional Disney-type movie, it's still a wonderful movie. It has great effects and a great story. Just because the majority of people don't like something, doesn't mean that you can't. That can also go the other way. If the majority likes something, doesn't mean that you have to. Take Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Hilary Duff. They used to be really hot but now I can't stand them at all. Britney....well, you've seen what's become of her since her married that talentless, lazy loser. She's become the same thing herself. Lindsay....eww. There is absolutely no reason for her to look like that. Everyone knows why she was really in the hospital. Exaustion ? Yeah, right. Her nose was exausted. And Hilary Duff. Double eww. She was once the hottest young lady on the Disney channel. But since she's been with her talentless, lazy loser boyfriend (what's with these hot actresses having worthless boyfriends that get them into drugs ? C'mon. You can look at pictures of Hilary from the last year and honestly tell me that she looks like that because she's lost her baby fat ? Where did she lose it, rehab ?)
Wait. I think I got a little off topic, here. What were we talking about ? Oh, yeah. Black Cauldron. It's a great fun movie. The perfect thing to pop in the dvd player on a dark, rainy day when you need to cheer yourself up. Most of the movies I like are these types of movies. The Halloweentown movies, Langoliers, the Mulan movies, A Knight's Tale, etc. Sometimes you just need to forget about what other people think about so called horrible movies and veg out in front of the tv watching whatever you feel like watching. Let your brain take a vacation for a few hours and have fun. I love Black Cauldron.

I own the 1998 VHS release, and have burned a widescreen DivX copy I downloaded onto VCD. (Except the video and audio are sped up a bit. ) I want to own it on DVD, but I'm waiting just a while longer for a better release. But I'm not holding my breath.

Well, to everyone that still waiting for a better edition as you said I'd suggest you buy it since it would be a miracle if Disney evere release it on a special edition.

What I don't get is why Disney doesn't take chances with this movie and actually make a better edition. I mean, they must know that there are people out there that really like this movie. They could even make it a cult movie like "The Nightmare Before Christmas".

I don't own it yet. You see, the thing is here I can't even seem to find it for rent. No store (including Blockbuster) holds it, let alone sells it. I'll purchase it off Amazon someday as a blind-buy, but in the near future it won't be seeing my DVD shelf.

I also own it because I am mostly a Disney completist (with the exception of Home on the Range--jsut can't spend good money on that).

Anyway, glad I got it and it makes for a good Halloween family movie when all the rest out there is horror blood and guts.

I remember reading the Lloyd Alexander books back in grade 5 in 1985 or so around when it came out.

The Black Cauldron is the second in Lloyd Alexander's series for young readers known as the Prydain Chronicles. The film is something of a combination of Cauldron and the first book, The Book of Three. They're all very good, some of my favorite books from my early adloescence, and the Disney studio should have taken more from the source material. It's a common complaint, that existing stories get "Disneyfied" in the production process; some sins are more egregious than others. The Jungle Book bore little resemblance to Kipling but remains one of my favorties anyway, and it got me to read and enjoy the original works. Somehow I doubt many folks went to the library looking for Lloyd Alexander's name after viewing this movie (apologies to thomashton). I've seen some of Tim Burton's conceptual work from the film's development (back when he was a "cast member") & it looks a lot more on point to me...but this was a time when the company was in trouble, espcially the motion picture division. It's too bad the film kinda plays that way.

Really, the whole series deserves another shot. I assume Disney still owns options on the property. Perhaps I should get to work on my live-action script? The company could do well with a Narnia-type presentation of these great books.

Hi I have it both on video and DVD. I bought the video from the UK when it was released there in the late 90's. This was one of those Disney movies that many people were interested in because it was unavailable and seemed likely to stay that way. I was therefore so excited at the prospect of seeing this movie. Then in Australia it was released about three years ago on DVD and I also just had to have it. So I have two editions and I like the film. The movie creates a feeling of real suspense and when the army arises out of the cauldron, it is both creepy and scary. It is a good film to have in your Disney collection and one that would have a very interesting and captivating "making of" documentary if they were to make an honest and true one of the creation process of this movie.

It would be a hundred's time more interesting than the making of's that we normally see.

Yes, I have the Black Cauldron. Although the movie has its flaws, it uses the multi-plane camera in a really nice way, the score is all right and some characters are quite memorable. I remember the first time I saw those living dead and how exciting it was. That scene still feels great, and of course the bits with the witches are hilarious. The Horned King has a presence in the movie, and although he's not that complex a villain, he serves his purpose well. Although this movie doesn't reach my top 10 list of Disney animated movies, it's certainly an entertaining movie every Disney fan should watch at least once.

Well, considering that a digitally restored anamorphically enhanced edition of "The Black Cauldron" has already been released in France, I do believe there is a new edition comming up in the future.

I actually liked this movie alot when it came out. I remember seeing it in the theater, and on a subsequent visit to WDW getting a snack at "Gurgi's Munchies & Crunchies" in Fantasyland (I don't recall what it is currently, but it's the snack bar between the Mad Tea Party & The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh). True, it's not typical Disney fare, but that doesn't mean it's less important. The dark overtones and the Horned King remind me ever so slightly of Chernebog in "Fantasia".

I do own the DVD, and enjoy it purely for the movie, since it's completely lacking in Special Features. If there is an anamorphic transfer on it's way prior to Blu-Ray/HD-DVD, I'd probably pick it up for better picture quality.

I own it, R1. Have watched it once, and it really is a quite mediocre film. Not as bad as Oliver & co or Winnie The Pooh, though. Brr!
