The Films of 2005
Now that this year is coming to a close, let's rank all of the 2005 films we've seen this year. These are based on nothing beyond personal preference. I've used the A to D classification system, as I think stars and numbers are too open to interpretation. Within each category, there is some kind of order too.
There might be the odd '2004' movie in there, but some of these only came out in Australia in early 2005.
A
Sin City
Batman Begins
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
The Proposition
A- (if I was doing a top 5, these would be just outside)
DiG (Documentary)
Serenity
Everything Is Illuminated
Melinda and Melinda
B
Land of the Dead
Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Good Night and Good Luck
Night Watch
Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire
C
Constantine
Fantastic Four
Herbie: Fully Loaded
Elektra
The Ring 2
The Constant Gardener
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride
Brothers Grimm
Exorcism of Emily Rose
Broken Flowers
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Thumbsucker
C-
Elizabethtown
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of Sith
Dark Water
The Amityville Horror
Unleashed
Mr & Mrs Smith
King Kong
D
Kingdom of Heaven
The Island
D-
Red Eye
Wolf Creek
A Lot Like Love
9 Songs
I'm sure I've missed a few. I actually made a list of the films I saw for this purpose, but there are a few films missing from the list. Seems to be a lot in the C category. I guess I walked out of most of them this year saying "meh".

I'm going to go with the "letter grade" approach. After looking at my list I might be a bit too harsh, but I seem to get more cinematic excitement recently with just going to the "classics" section of my local video store.

This list is only movies from 2005, not 2004 movies I saw during early 05, such as the Aviator and Finding Neverland.

Thanks for the reference Disneykid! I won't be posting my final thoughts until January, maybe late February. I still have quite a number of films that I want to see before making final decisions, namely: Munich, The New World, Matchpoint, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Walk the Line, Junebug, and The World. Tier two would be The Producers, The Ballad of Jack and Rose, The White Countess. I'll be using the grading system, since the star and number system is becoming arbitrary/pointless.

I'll use the four star system:
March of the Penguins ****
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ****
Pride and Prejudice ****
Serenity ***1/2
Cinderella Man ***1/2
Sky High ***1/2
Batman Begins ***
Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith ***
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ***
Fantastic Four ***
Ice Princess ***
Herbie: Fully Loaded ***
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory **1/2
The Pacifier **1/2
Yours, Mine and Ours **1/2
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy **
The Island **
Bewitched *1/2
House of Wax No stars-the worst movie I saw in 2005, until---
The Dukes of Hazzard-No stars. It's just too darn bad I can't give this one a grade of -10 or something. Frankly, it deserves it.

I agree with you on the grading system. For 2006 films I will start using the grading system.Prince Eric wrote:Thanks for the reference Disneykid!
Best Movies of 2009:
1. Moon
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. The Hurt Locker
4. Coraline
5. Ponyo
1. Moon
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. The Hurt Locker
4. Coraline
5. Ponyo
These are the movies I have seen this year from most to least favorite. Each line break is one notch down on the personal enjoyment scale.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Batman Begins
Chicken Little
Fantastic 4
The Producers
King Kong
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Howl's Moving Castle
Corpse Bride
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
War of the Worlds
Ice Princess
(bigger gap in quality)
Herbie: Fully Loaded
Robots
Madagascar
2005 had some terrific movies, but it also had long stretches where nothing was worth seeing. I like a little chance to catch up on the classics, but the first four months pretty much had nothing for me.

The Best Films of 2005
1. Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire: Deffinatley my new favorite movie. Even thouh this film did leave out alot it was a great film. Mike Newell deffinatley got the feeling of the book. The acting got much better and the film also had great special effects. Overall I think everyone should see this film.
2. The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe: Being a fan of the book I was very excited to see this film. All I can say is that they got everything right in this film. The is probblay the best adaption of a book (but I find harry potter better overall in film and books so thats why its 1). The CGI was great and the acting was good also. All fans of the books should see this.
3. Charlie and The Choclate Factory: This film was also great. Tim Burton did a wonderful job with the book. Johnny Depp was perfect as Wonka and the sets were amazing also.
4. Batman Begins: I read comics sometimes. But growing up I loved Batman the Animated series. I was never a fan of The Movies that came out in the 90s and The Burton films also. Batman is my favorite superhero is because he is just normal like all of us. He has no super strength like superman or can stick to walls like spiderman. Director Chris Nolan did an excellent movie. He showed why Bruce became Batman. Everything was basically great in this film from the acting to the music. Overall though this was not as good as Spiderman though.
5. Madagascar: While It doesnt seem like this would be one of the best in 05... I found it great. Why I just liked this movie was that it was pointless fun. This movie had alot of laughs. The animation in this movie was very good and the peguins were hilarious. The cast was great also for this film.
6. Legend of Zorro: Just a fun popcorn flick. Very underatted film.
The Good Films in 2005
1. Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of The Sith: This was the best Star Wars Film ever. I loved how they finally show Anikan turn into Vadar. All Star Wars fans wont Be Dissapointed.
2. Red Eye: This movie was just a fun thriller to watch. Itex espically great if you watch it at the movies. Also the main people did a great performance.
3. War of The Worlds: Used to be my fav film of 05 but after a second viewing it isnt as good. This film had terrfic action and CGI effects.
4. Wedding Crashers: Wow who knew that a crude humor movie could be this funny.
5. Fantastic 4: Just a fun popcorn flick.
The Best Directors of 05
1. Mike Newell (Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire): I was having doubts with him directing ths film because he made Mona Lisa Smiles which didnt get good reviews. Also I was hearing that they were cutting alot out in the new Potter film. Was I wrong though. He did a terrific job with the new film. He really got the feeling of the book and he picked a great cast and a very good composer.
2. Tim Burton (CATCF, Corpse Bride): While Im usually not a fan of his workl I found thse two films to be very good. He added great sets and his ways of telling the stories was just great also.
The Best Actors of 2005
1. Johney Deep (Charlie and The Choclate Factory): He did a great job as Wonka. In My opinion he Did better than Wilder. He was funny in the movie and he got Wonka correct in this film.
2. Christian Bale (Batman Begins): In my opinion it is very hard to do a good job as Bruce Wayne/ Batman. In the 90s film I found that they did him completly wrong. But reading some comics Bruce/Batman is suppsoed to be very serious and a little funny. While other actors made him more like spider-man. Christian Bale though dod a great job as him. He really got the part right as Batman. He was very serious and a little funny. He only needs to work on being Batman a little but Im sure he will have the part better in the sequel. In my opinion he is the best bruce wayne/ batman that we ever had in a film.
Best Actresses of 05
1. Naomi Watts (King Kong): While Kong was a bad movie she did perfect as the part. She really made u believe that Kong was real and that she had feelings for him. Next time though I think she just needs to find better movies to be in.
2. Rachel McAdams (Red Eye/Wedding Crahers): She is the next rising actress. She was perfect in Red Eye. She got her part right. Overall I will be very surprised if she never gets a oscar in her acting carrear.
I have the worst of 05 Tomower.
