Welcome Jasmine-rules!
As far as I know, the LD release of "Alice" was the best special edition produced by Disney untill the Platinum "Snow White" came out. So, it is safe to assume that the DVD will rock too, it seems it will have hundreds of archival material and deleted concepts/songs/sequences. The best thing is that we are going to get the complete (hopefully) "One Hour In Wonderland" TV special. So, if you are a Disney fan and collector, "Alice" Special Edition DVD is a 'must-buy'!

I don't have Alice in Wonderland in any form (gasp!) but if I did I'd still upgrade to the new special edition. I've seen it, but I never managed to get it on VHS, and when I made the jump to DVD there were other more important titles to get, and the waiting seems to have paid off with the new DVD. I *will* get the new set, though!
Presumably, the picture will be restored. as Disney usuially does this for their big titles, and even if it's not, the fully loaded second disc would make it worth repurchasing anyway.
Advice: YES, get youe Gold DVD on ebay soon so you'll get good bids before Disney thrusts the special edition on the public's conciousness, BUT be sure to cut off the proof-of-purchase tab or UPC symbol first and find somewhere safe to keep it. When the new DVD comes out there will likely be an offer from Disney to get $5 back for purchasing it twice -- which will add to your profit, when combining Disney's rebate and the the money that the GC fetches for you on ebay -- but you NEED to have the proof-of-purchase tab or UPC symbol from the original DVD to perticipate. You'll also need the POP tabs or UPC from the new DVD and the reciept from the purchase of the new DVD.

But I HATE the new cover-much worse than the previous four (well 2 actually-the 2 original covers were reused).
Black Diamond Cover=Masterpiece Collection Cover
Non-Collection Release Cover=Gold Classic Collection
That non-collection one is when it was released with Robin Hood as a "Special Edition" type-thing.

I really like the new cover (click on the link below if you didn't see it yet!). This will be a nice addition to my small but growing dvd collection.
Here's the cover

Personally, I love it. I love the dark and somewhat twisted edge they gave the cover rather than making it look all happy and cutesy. The Cheshire Cat and Alice look like lovers, but at least that oddity isn't as bad as masculine Aurora and Prince Jay Leno from the Sleeping Beauty cover. Good job, Disney, you've finally made an Alice cover that truly captures the film's mood as opposed to making them happy and colorful to attract little girls.
Jake-Apparantly this WILL get a new restoration. The cover says Alice is THX certified when the old DVD wasn't. I thought the picture of the old DVD was excellent, but I'm glad to see they're still trying to give it the highest quality presentation possible. Plus, the new DVD will have Dolby Digital 5.1 while the old DVD was 5.0, so if one thing's going to be improved, it's the film's soundtrack.

I like the cover; it's kind of psychedelic. Not crazy about the "Virtual Wonderland Party" but as long as they put the good stuff on it, too, whatever. I guess it will be packaged like Sleeping and Lion King with the outer slipcase. At least I think so. Maybe Disney will chinse and just put it in a slim 2-disc case. But that's immaterial, I'd say.
Yes, the upgrade is well worth it. Especially considering the new SRP is the same as the current disc - and you'll be getting a lot more. Pre-orders should be around $20 or so, which is about how much you should get for it if you sell your current disc on eBay, or if not, it will only be a few bucks out of pocket. Seems very much worth it. I wonder if there will be a $5 Upgrade for those who have the old disc. Might be worth snipping off the PoP before you sell it.

I love all the covers from Alice in Wonderland.
They are all great covers what to hate about? It's also a great movie.
I would buy the 2 disc Masterpiece Edition because it will be better than the Gold Edition. I hope it has save $5 off if you have the Gold Edition Proof of Purchase.
Anyway buy the Masterpiece Edition because it going to be much much much better.

Eh - I'm not big on the cover art; yes, it's dark and psychadelic, but Alice looks like she's stoned. Not that it doesn't fit with the whole theme of the movie, but still...
Now I'm just wondering how the other SE covers will turn out - particularly Poca and L&S. MP is so whimsical that you can make pretty much any cover you like without making it too silly, but I just hope Disney doesn't go airbrush-crazy with the other two. I'm also looking out for bad composition - Disney has been notoriously bad with that. *gag*
And again with the generic "2-Disc Set" banner! Wtf?! If they're gonna start this new "Masterpiece Edition" line (poor choice of words, since they already have the "Masterpiece Collection" VHS tapes), then they might as well put "Masterpiece Edition" on the top banner! And instead of that horrendous plug for another one of their insipid DVD activities on the bottom banner, how about they put "Special 2-Disc Set!" on there instead? I mean - geez! Whomever's designing these dvd covers needs to be shot!

Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."

I like the cover, and it's nice to see Disney try something new for Alice after reusing the same two basic images for all of the previous video and DVD releases. I wouldn't have advertised the Wonderland Party on the cover, though, but I suppose it's better than "Featuring An All-New Song." Me, I'd put "Masterpiece Edition" on the top and "New Feature-Laden 2-Disc Set!" on the bottom.
Also, I think it's extremely odd they're touting this as a limited-time release. Even from the old VHS days, Alice in Wonderland was one of three or four titles that was ALWAYS available and never went out of print once (except when it was replaced by an edition with a new cover or features, like the second Masterpiece cover replacing the older one.) The others included Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone and Mary Poppins, I think.
