Buying TV series...

Post by Evil Genie Jafar »

I was wondering. Since TV series on DVD are obviously more expensive than any other release (with the exeption of TMNT: $10 each and Spawn: $15 for the first 2 Seasons and the last one for $10 8) :P ) , how do you buy them?

For the longest time I had just the first Season of the only series I used to buy. It took me quite some time to finally deciding in completing it. But now I'm going to be done with one and already on track with the rest of them.

I asked a friend once and she said she had to finish buying one before getting into another one.

How do you buy your series?

Like my friend one at a time, whenever you choose, you keep buying lots even tough you have others incomplete.... how?

I tend to buy every season (in chronological order) of shows that I like. I buy them whenever I have the money. There are only about 6 or 7 shows that I think are worth watching.

There is an exception, though: Seinfeld. I still haven't caught up..and I haven't watched an episode of Seinfeld since spring! :\ Deepdvddiscount.com ran out of Seinfeld, so I guess I'll have to wait a few more months. Hopefully, they'll go down in price. I can't pay over $40 for a tv show dvd, not even Seinfeld!

I like to get the entire series of a show on DVD. As long as it's in season box sets (or at least in chronological order).

For example, before the Muppet Show Season 1 came out on DVD a different company had released 15 3-episode discs. I stayed away from these because I don't like buying TV shows unless they're in order.

I've got the entire series of the original Transformers on DVD and the entire series of Beast Wars on DVD. I also have Jim Henson's Storyteller on DVD (but that was only 9 episodes so it's on DVD) and Jim Henson's Storyteller Greek Myths (which is only 4 episodes). Then there's also the original Ninja Turtles which I only have season 1 of.
But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.

I buy every TV Show that I had ever liked. I like to buy them in chronological order, but sometimes if I get so far behind I will just buy the Complete Series set (Buffy) Right now my TV-on-DVD collection is 100+ I have 10 or so that I still have aside that I need to watch. TV shows I like more have a bigger priority than those I like less. I want my collection to look good, so when I buy a series, I usually like to get the collector's box that comes with it (Friends) I usually dont like Best of releases or single spiode releases but If it is cheap, a TV show that isnt likely to come to DVD soon, or a show I really love, then I will give in. Unlike most of our normal DVDs, I paid for a large majority of my TV-shows. My rents usually pay for the others. I am now broke.....but I love my evergrowing collection! :D
We need season sets of all DCOSs and all DCOMs on DVD! And Better Cover Art!

I've only bought one TV show which I really like (Xena - Warrior Princess). So far I'm purchasing the series in chronological order. I have volume I of season I, and the second volume and the first of season II are on order. I also plan on buying Desperate Housewives and Life As We Know It, but that's much less problematic since there's only one season available.

BTW, why was Life As We Know It axed? It's a good show in my opinion.

Ratings. It was up against both CSI and The OC, so it was already dead.

Anyways, for me, I like to buy only if I really really love the show. So far, I've got the following on DVD:

I Love Lucy - Season One, Volume Eight
Ozzie and Harriet - 20 Episodes, Public Domain
The Lucy Show - 30 Episodes, Public Domain
Star Trek - Volume Eight, Volume Forty
Mary Tyler Moore - Season One, Season Two
Three's Company - Season One
Dynasty - Season One
Remington Steele - Season One
The Golden Girls - Season One, Season Two
Doogie Howser, MD - Season Two
Home Improvement - Season One
Mad About You - Cereal Box DVD with one episode
Lois & Clark - Season One
Friends - Season One, Season Two, Season Nine, Series Finale
The Jeff Foxworthy Show - Season One
Family Guy - Freakin' Sweet Collection
Coupling - Series One, Series Two, Series Three, Series Four
Firefly - Complete Series
Desperate Housewives - Season One
House - Pilot Episode

I got most of them on sale, except Golden Girls, which I buy season by season and usually pay around $30 for each season, and I still need to get Season Three. A few others I got on sale and the completist in me now wants to get the rest of the series. And even a few others I liked the show, but not enough to get it on DVD, until I got it on sale, and now I want the rest of the series. The one show I'm still holding out for is I Love Lucy. I refuse to buy any season sets until all six seasons and the comedy hours are released, that way I can buy them all together.

I am pretty selective in what I buy when it comes to TV shows. I only buy what I will watch over and over. There are shows that I liked, but haven't bought because I can watch them still on TV Land and that is good enough for me.

In my collection, you will find:

CSI Miami - Season 1-3

Crime Story - Season 1 & 2

Home Improvement - Season 1-3

Remington Steele - Season 1-2

Lois & Clark The New Adventures of Superman - Season One

Airwolf - Season One

Malcolm In The Middle - Season One (that's it after almost three years!)

Highlander - Seasons 1-6

The Lone Gunmen - Complete Series

Battlestar Gallactica (Original) - The Complete Series

Buck Roger Adventures in the 25th Century - Complete Series

Wacky Races - Complete Series

Chip and Dale Rescue Ranger - Season One

Fraggle Rock - Season One

24 - Seasons 1-4

Desperate Housewives - Season One

Lost - Season One

House - Season One

Space Above and Beyond - The Complete Series

Stories of the Century - The Complete Series

Silk Stalkings - Season 1-3

There's more but those are the important ones.

how do you buy them?
Usually on the week of its release, when they (some stores) do a combo discount with another season with a credit card, cash, or gift certificates. ;)

Well, it depends. We usually buy it on the week of its release because I think it's cheaper that way (i.e.: ThunderCats, Simpsons) otherwise it can wait until a DeepDiscountDVD sale (i.e.: Three's Company, Bewitched).

As I'm looking at the shelf, the ones that we have "up to its last release" (not including ones with just a SEASON ONE release [sadly!] or "completed" are:
- Bewitched
- Dark Angel
- Father of the Pride
- Fresh Prince
- FRIENDS (in that oh so heavy box!)
- Invader Zim
- Legend of Zelda
- Married w/Children
- Simpsons
- Smallville
- SouthPark
- SpongeBob SquarePants
- Tales from the Crypt
- Three's Company
- Transformers

I haven't been that selective, although there are some I will definitely buy. I've been fortunate enough that some that I was thinking about buying popped up for review, so I got them for free.

Something like Star Trek I will just buy whenever I can afford, and if there is a big Trek sale (as there is now - 60%) I will scoop up a few.

The following list is lengthy, but it gives some idea as to how erratic my buying/reviewing patterns are. I pick something up, then may never bothered with the other ones. Highlighted completed sets.

Angel S1 - 5
Astro Boy - Complete 1980s Collection

A-Team: S1 & 2
The Avengers: 1967 Collection (Review Discs)

Curb Your Enthusiasm: S1 + S2 through 4 (review discs)
Dallas: S1 - 3
Doctor Who - Various volumes (about 20 of them)
Dungeons & Dragons: Complete

I used to not be much a fan of TV on DVD (click here for more details), but I've gradually become more appreciative of TV on DVD, especially after buying the wonderful Simpsons season boxsets. Needless to say, aside from those, I don't buy that much, and probably won't; I'll probably only buy Simpsons things and a few other shows that I really enjoy and aren't on TV that much (yes, The Simpsons is on a lot, but still, gotta love those audio commentaries :p). I'll probably get Futurama, DuckTales, Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers and Malcom in the Middle DVDs soon, as they aren't on TV that much and I like them.

Everytime I see a Simpson season on sale, I'll get it. Then it will slowly be complete (which is totally fine to me, I have no time to watch it).

If I'm in between two series, I wouldn't just try and finish one series first, I'd just buy whatever is on sale.

I love to watch TV DVD but there is only limited number shows I deem purchasable even with the falling prices:

The Simpsons - Want to Own through Season 12. Own through 6 Christmas
Seinfeld - Own All Seasons and own through 6 after Christmas
I Love Lucy - Want all seasons and waiting for Paramount to drop the price. (And they generally do.)
Twlight Zone - Want all seasons and waiting for Image to drop the price. (Being Image I don't know.)
Star Trek (Original Series) - Want all seasons and waiting for Paramount to drop the price. (And they generally do.) Might get one for Christmas
The Honeymooners - Want all one season and will likely purchase in 2006.
Cheers - Want the Diane years (1-5) and own all five. May purchase more with price reductions.
South Park - Want through season 4 but only have two for now.
Mary Tyler Moore - Want all seven for $15/piece. Own first season.
Sanford & Son - Want first four seasons and have yet to get one.
Friends - Want through 4 and own through 3 as they are $20/Amazon and get a WB $10 per season. So only $10.
Monty Phython - I will buy the entire set.

There are a lot of shows that I want, but don't own yet. I buy what I can, when I can...

For instance, I recently have found some great prices on TV shows, so I have probably almost doubled my collection of TV on DVD (not counting anime) in the last couple of months.

Arrested Development - S1 & S2 - $14.99 each (Black Friday)
Family Guy S2 - 24.99 (Black Friday)
Land of the Lost S3 - $9.99 (used) - I don't have S2 yet.
Leave it to Beaver S1 (in the lunch box)
The Man Show S4 - $15.99 - I don't have S2 or S3 yet.
The Muppet Show S1 w/ felt cover
Scrubs S1 & S2 w/ Best Buy bonus discs - $24.99 each
Simpsons S3 - 19.99 (used)

I only collect a small number of TV shows which I plan on buying ALL seasons:

Friends (completed)
Seinfeld (own 1-4, missing 5&6)
ER (own 1-3, currently up to date)
CSI Las Vegas (own 1-5, currently up to date)

I also own:
Season 1 of MacGyver
Season 1 and 2 of the Commish
Season 1 of Renegade
I have no intention of buying any more of these seasons, except for season 5 of MacGyver because the seasons are just far to expensive.

I'm going to buy full series box sets of these shows when my holiday overtime check comes in:
Buffy
Sex and the City
I'd also like to sell my Friends season sets and buy the complete series set, but it's just so much work, I don't think I'll ever get around to doing it, unless someone wants to buy all of them from me at a reasonable price.

If they're released, I'll buy complete series box sets of:
24
Law and Order: Special Victims Unit

24 is up to Season 4, I think, as far as DVDs go. Season Five is this January, isn't it?

And Law & Order SVU had a strange release schedule. They did season one, then went and did season five, then went back to season two. I'm not sure if 3 and 4 are released, though. That's another series I can add to my list of "wait until the complete series is on DVD". Of course, I'll probably be waiting several more years since SVU is still going strong in the ratings.

I've Netflixed season 4, which I'm watching now...but I don't want to buy each season by itself since each season is really expensive. I don't watch 24 on TV either, so watching the new seasons on DVD are the first time I'm seeing them. I'm hoping to just buy a complete series set.
As for SVU, I just recently started watching this show, but since we have a serious amount of reruns so I've seen practially every episode. I'd much rather buy a box set since the DVDs are being released out of order.
