Well when watching "Bruce Almighty" on t.v., I happened to see a "critics are raving" t.v. spot for Narnia! And alot of possitive reviews, but I tried to look at the corner to see which people were saying these comments! Most of them were just small reviewers on the radio or t.v. that 90% of the world has never heard of! However I believe I remember seeing a possitive review from "Entertainment Magazine". Also the world's favorite critcis, Ebert and Roper, gave it "Two Thumbs Up"! Any film that gets Two Thumbs Up from them has to be good right?
Anyway, so it looks like the majority of the critics are liking Narnia! But even if they didn't, I can give you a fact right now: THE CRITICS HAVE, AND WILL ALWAYS, HAVE POOR TASTE IN MOVIES!!!
So I really don't think a couple negative reviews are going to make this a bad film!

This week's Christmas Radio Times in the UK (the one with the Dr. Who cover
) includes a FREE NARNIA CD.

I assume this is from one of the BBCs own Radio adaptations, but you can get disc 1 of Prince Caspian inside the magazine (presumably with an opportunity to buy the rest at a knockdown price).
Remember - Other listing magazines are available

did he actually say the vulgar thing about Disney, the article isn't too clear? anyway real Disney movies can not be considered common or banal. And Disney movies are not sugarcoated to the degree most people think, yes The Little Mermaid was, but a lot of them were not.Paka wrote:Hmm... yeah, I saw that article a couple days ago via IMDb. The "vulgarity" comment is rather ambiguous, as vulgar doesn't necessarily mean "offensive" or "distasteful." It can also be used to signify "common" or "banal" - which Disney's sugary retellings of darker classic children's literature could certainly be seen as.
C.S. Lewis is a great author though.

Well, I just got back from the screening tonight, as I mentioned in the above post....
......and I have to say, this movie is quite good. I can't recall anything significant that was really cut out from the book. Quite honestly, it's one of the most faithful adaptations from a novel I've ever seen on-screen. I suppose this is one of the reasons its running time is on the long side, at about 2 hours, 15-20 minutes. I didn't mind the time, however, and from what I could tell, none of the children that were present got bored as a result of the length either.
The children's acting was all very good, and remained faithful to the descriptions of the novel. Peter was a bit cookie-cutter in his nobility and righteousness, but I have no complaints about that as he was so portrayed in the book. Lucy was predictably adorable, and the actress (on top of simply being cute) also did a very good job actually acting and making the character believable, which you don't often expect from children. Edmund, as the most "interesting" character of the 3 was also quite good in his role. And Susan...while, she served mainly to round out the group, it seems. The actress was still quite good, as far as what she had to work with. But the character of Susan has always, at least to me, been the least interesting of the four.
I'm also quite surprised (and pleased, of course) the film only got a PG rating, as it was surprisingly dark and violent at times. Those of you familiar with the novels will be able to guess which parts, and the movie doesn't hold back on any of them.
I very much hope box office results from this film will justify making more, and the series will continue. I can't see them seriously considering The Horse and His Boy, but I hope the others will all get the big screen treatment. I'm particularly rooting for The Magician's Nephew, as that was the book I found most interesting.

I will probably see this opening day, but I don't expect to be blown away by it like I was with The Lord of the Rings series. It's weird, but someone else on an online blog has my exact same feelings: I never once picked up a Tolkein book as a child, but couldn't wait for the movies. The opposite holds true for the Narnia books. I'm not impressed with the director's or screenwriter's credentials, that's all, and compared to the production values of the trailer, parts (such as the costumes) look hokey.
I think C.S. Lewis is the best judge of whether or not his books are adaptable to the screen. It's an issue that always comes up with writers and the potential for making their work into a movie. There's some who really don't care what happens with their work and sign over the rights for the money, and there's others who are deeply concered if their message is transferable to the screen. It's a valid concern.

Hopefully all the books get made into movies. I am currently reading The Horse and his Boy(only read the first chapter so far). I am reading by the current numbering system. Hopefully this film will get a 5/5 from me even if it is from that guy involved with the intellectual wasteland known as Shrek 2.

That's the book least likely te be made into a film, though, at least not one that remains very true to the book. It simply contains so many negative ethnic stereotypes; I could see alot of controversary starting over a movie of it.DaveWadding wrote:Horse and His Boy is my favorite one!GhostHost wrote:Hopefully all the books get made into movies. I'm back from my midnight showing. Only one word can sum up the movie perfectly: Wow.
As an avid fan and reader (avid enough to go to a midnight showing
), I thought it was perfect. TM2 was right, this was one of the best text to screen adaptions I've seen. It kept many many minor parts which I thought for SURE would be cut...but there they were. The visuals were beautiful, the acting was plus, and the cheeky comments added to beef up the dialogue were all pretty funny. I didn't laugh, because I was too focused on analyzing it the first time, but they all were very much appreciated in lightening it up just a touch.
These comments actually gave Susan a little of what she was lacking in the book, which was a touch a depth and roundness to her character (if you know what I mean). They gave other characters a touch of depth as well, like Mr. Beaver for example.
I just HAD to come back and add this in: my favorite performance was Tilda Swinton as the White Witch. Simply bonechilling.
All around just a fabulous, fabulous movie that actually exceeded my astronomical expectations in every way.
Take it from a HUGE Narnia geek: 10/10.

It's a good movie, one that I thiink needs a second viewing (or more), it's better than Lord of the Rings in my opinion.
PS: Watch the credits for a while when they come on at the end of the movie.

Can I ask a honest question? I heard that this movie was very christian. I'm interested in watching it but getting this christian morality forced down my throat is certainly something i don't want to spend my money on, so anyone can tell me how christian it really is?
I just wish one day someone would make the Discworld into movies, not just always these black and white stories. :/

Heard from who? The 500000000000 articles the press has ran on that since the movie was announced? Maybe it's because I've made a habit of glossing over the connotations, but the movie didnt seem THAT overtly Christian to me. The media just trumped it up as the 2nd coming of the Passion because that will sell papers and more tickets.Werwolf wrote:Can I ask a honest question? I heard that this movie was very christian. No, I havn't seen the movie, but in the book the only major Christian parts are when the children are called Daughters and Sons of Adam and Eve. However there are many subtle Christian parts, but they arn't forced down your throat (which wouldn't make sense anyways since you have the choice to go see a movie).Werwolf wrote:Can I ask a honest question?
