How to Get a Parent to Stop Smoking
Hello, both my parents smoke and have been since for decades. My mother is 52 and my father is 48. I am worried about their health since my mother has recently obtained the "smoker's laugh" (you know the hissing) I want them to stop, but I don't know what I can do. I want them to live a long healthy live, but with smoking that is not possible. The only way I can possibly end their habit is guilt. Can someone please tell me what I can do - before it is too late. If such a great mean such as Walt Disney is defeated by lung cancer than one chance do my parents have?

I think you waited too long.
My mom used to smoke. What I did was that back when I was little (around 8 or 9) , I used to put red ants on her box of cigarrettes; that way she was going to be bitten

Well, obvioulsy that didn't work. The reason why she stopped was that obviously she saw how concerned I was about her and she felt touched.
.. but if most people have been smoking for so many years, no it is hard for them to stop. Even knowing its bad for their health.

As a former smoker (I recently quit, and have been smoke-free for over 2 months), I can say it comes down to how much you want to quit. I just can't put it any other way. I ended up having bronchitis for the second time in four months, and I just said, "ENOUGH". I didn't want to be sick because of a bad habit. I got some nicotine gum, and chewed that. After three weeks, I was off of the gum, and now, I am done with cigarettes and nicotine!
My Mom used to smoke, and my Sister said she prayed every night for my Mom to stop smoking. After thirty years, my Mom finally decided to stop. She has now been smoke free for almost three years!
So, there is hope. Don't give up.

My mother smokes too. She's almost 50. I think MadonnasManOne is right about wanting to quit. It's a super-bitch trying. It's like any other average chemical addiction, because there's also an emotional side to it. It serves to ease the nerves and emotionally it's a comfort behavior. A very bad habit to be sure, but also something to help her cope. My mother would only quit smoking if it required 0 effort and she could just eat candy and watch TV and forget about it. You can't just forget about because of the whole emotional addiction to the behavior.

1. Steal their cigarettes and throw them away.
2. STASHONE's idea is good, have them think you're smoking so that they stop.
3. Steal their cigarettes and throw them away.
4. The patch?
5. Steal their cigarettes and throw them away.
6. The gum?
6. Steal their cigarettes and throw them away.
7. Pretend you're getting sick from their smoke and always cough when they're smoking.
8. Steal their cigarettes and throw them away.
9. Ask them when you'll be allowed to smoke, make it seem like a good thing when they know it's not, and get mad when they say "No, smoking's not good for you" and you say "But you do it!" and they say "Well I was stupid" and you say "I want to be stupid too!". Essentially, make them realize that they're not teenagers anymore, they don't need to smoke to fit in, and that giving it up will be the best gift they could give you (besides life of course).
