Sadly, I must agree that Jarhead will not be nominated for any major cats . However, I wouldn't be so quick to assume Memoirs of a Geisha will fail as horribly at the B.O.

But right now Geisha isn't getting the best reviews at rottentomatoes, but that can always change.

There are only 10 reviews so far, and a movie of this caliber will certainly generate anywhere between 150-200 reviews. I agree with TheLittleMeman, even if Memoirs of a Geisha doesn't get Best Picture/Best Director/Best Actress nominations, I am still expecting a count of around eight, including: Costume Design, Art Direction, Cinematography, Score, Make-up, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, and it's biggest chance of a "big" award, Best Supporting Actress for Li Gong.

Please don't start dissing a movie that's an unargued modern classic by saying it doesn't have stuff that it does. You are only making yourself look foolish. Do yourself a favor and just say you didn't "get" the movie.

Alright! Fine! I didn't GET IT! I didn't get why those people flew around throughout the movie. I didn't care for the whole "sword that had powers" or what laughable nonsense. I didn't really get the ending with him jumping off the cliff or whatever it was. I didn't get it.

I agree with Prince Eric (regardless of my thoughts on the movie). If your favourite movie is about talking lions and their problems in life, I'm sure you can "suspend disbelief" (as PE so nicely put it) in a few flying human-beings.

Anyways, I agree with Eric on what I already partially agreed on. I think Memoirs of a Geisha will be The Aviator, but without Picture and Director. It will be nominated in almost everything and from what I can see, I can't see anything beating it for at least Costume Design and Makeup.

As for Brokeback, I suspect a M$B/Aviator type match, between that of BBM and Munich, in their respective parts. Brokeback Mountain will be the darling and take home Picture, Director, Actor, and if they're lucky Supporting Actor or Actress. Munich will be nominated in everything and win many of the techies, or like Gangs of New York, not win anything.

The one award that I have total, undying faith that Mountain will win in will be Director for Ang Lee. Spielberg or none, Lee is the king this year.

It's late opening won't help it, but the initial reviews are trickling in and they are absolutely glowing. It's not your typical period piece. It's very experimental, just as you would expect from Terrance Malick. He could pose a serious threat the Ang Lee's director trophy, especially since he was passed up for his World War II epic (The Thin Red Line) in 1998 to Steven Spielberg! The Academy is basically going to have to decide if they want to give another trophy to Speilberg this year, or to a deserving past nominee that is in need of a little Golden guy! That's what this year's race boils down to. They have a lot to choose from - Ang Lee, Terrence Malick, Rob Marshall, David Cronenberg, George Clooney, Jame Ivory, James Mangold, Fernando Mierelles...Please people, there's too much to choose from than Speilberg.

Anyway, I would love to see a triple combination of Memoirs of a Geisha, Brokeback Mountain, and The New World split the pot in terms of a sweep in nominations and wins. All visually oriented movies by also-ran directors. Hmm...weird pattern.

I agree with everything in that statement, Eric. I just really want Mountain to win either Picture or Director, so I can prove for once that the Academy will not give Spielberg Picture just because he lost to, if I may say myself, a better film (Shakespeare in Love)...

Um, Brokeback Mountain has been made for close to eight months already. It made it's debut at the Toronto Film Festival in September and is going to be released on December 9th to the general public...so it's going to be eligible for Oscars for this year. There is a huge difference between Boys Don't Cry and Brokeback Mountain. Brokeback Mountain is a romantic epic that has high production values. That's usually up Oscar's ally.

By whose standards do I say Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a classic? Let's see, by just about every major film critics and film organization worth listening to, that's who. Not to mention it's 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. You obviously have no knowledge about the wuxia genre. The people were not "flying" around, genius. The fact the characters could manipulate gravity and leap between trees was a sign of their martial arts prowess. I find it funny that you call something this intelligent and resonant garbage when half the movies you endorse are indeed garbage. Funny how things work out.

P.S. Just how many and what movies have you seen by Ang Lee besides the obvious?

Prince Eric, I will have you know that I am a big fan of Ang Lee's and have seen most of his movies. I have not liked them all, but I respect his direction and subject matter.

He has made 10 films and I have seen six of them and "Brokeback Mountain" will be the seventh. My favorite of his is "The Ice Storm" and you know my least favorite. Once again just because critics rave about a movie doesn't make it a classic. "The Wizard of Oz" received a lot of negative reviews when it first opened and now look at it - that's a classic. CTHD is an acquired taste for those who like martial arts movies. I am not one of those, thus I refer to it as 'garbage'.

Ang Lee's version of "Sense & Sensibility" was very good and until the most recent version was one of the best of that particular movies remakes.

As for your remarks about "King Kong" - I will issue you this challenge. If "King Kong" doesn't get one nomination in one of the major categories I will go away, if you do the same if it does.

I never place myself above anyone else in my like or dislike of a movie or genre. You seem to think that you are above all else when it comes to saying what is good and what is bad.

Oh, so you don't think King Kong will get nominated because it's a remake? Okay. I thought you meant it wouldn't recieve any nominations because it's more of an "action" film. As for King Kong, I doubt it will recieve any awards either. Star Wars is definetely going to win the "technical" awards, while something else will win the other awards. I doubt King Kong will even get nominated for "Best Picture" or "Best Director".

OK, but when I say that I do not particularly care for a genre, I don't call it "garbage," because I'm not naturally disposed to it in the first place. You calling something garbage you are biased against in the first place is just plain ignorant.

There is never any guarantee what will be nominated, but going by the past, you can always make good predictions. I didn't say I hate King Kong because I haven't even seen it which I plan on doing! So know, I'm not even going to participate in your bogus challenge, because it doesn't make sense. I have a pretty good idea that it won't be nominated in the majors, because that's just common sense, but I'm not going to say I'm going to shut-up for good because I'm wrong this once.

Hmm. Puzzling idea. If I were Universal, I would re-release it in theatres, and then release it on DVD. I suspect to bomb again in theatres, but do very well on DVD, since more people will give it a chance (so they don't have to leave their homes ) I, personally will buy the disc, and go see the flick. I thought it was tremendous - Crowe's best film to date!

On the subject of Oscar's I much rather have Mr. Crowe be nominated than Eric Bana for Munich, but, you know I guess I'm bias against anything Munich I think the best chance for a major nom. would be Supporting Actor for Paul Giamatti.
