French DVD Covers More Beautiful Than American Ones

Post by PaulAtreides »

I've realized that the french covers for some of Disney's films are actually more beautiful than the american ones. I'll give you some examples:

Compared to the american one.

Or Image compared to the american one.

Or finally Image

What do you guys think? From which country do the best looking covers come from?

Disney in France obviously sells to a different category of people (obviously collectors) since all their packaging is top notch and sometimes more is added (Peter Pan for example). It's just Disney's way of marketing their product to the right people. :)

Those are indeed beautiful. But since this is a thread about cover art, I find the Japanese R2 TLM cover to be superior then what the US got.

I must say, she looks stunning. I love the unusual pose she has going on in the art. Sabastian and Flounder look way too shiny though and the background is unimaginative. Good cover overall though.

The Japanese covers for Disney movies aren't that different from the US counterparts. But I really like the covers for Beauty and The Beast and the sequel too.

Deluxe edition seems suitable for a film like this one.

A bit blurry I know, but very, very, very pretty.

The cover art of Beauty and the Beast the Enchanted Christmas is the same as the UK's re-release of the animated feature

Yeah, the french covers are much better, and they have more language tracks than the UK editions have, if the bonus discs were in english, i'd probably import a lot more!

Most of the bonus discs are in English - they give you the choice when the disc is first entered, like the main feature discs do.

Out of all my French discs, only Atlantis has a French only bonus disc.

So Fantasia 2 Disc, Peter Pan 2 Disc, Lion King 2 Disc, Pocahontas 2 disc, Lilo and Stitch 2 disc all have English second discs.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Really, ah fair enough, the only French dvd i got was BATB, and i was sad to find that i could only listen to it in French, and another language (cant remember it just yet) but that there was no english settiing. So i was watching people speaking in English, dubbed in French, and there i was lip reading

Thanks though, suppose i just assumed

I'd imagine it's because the average person in France values aesthetics more than your average North American, and many would probably be unwilling to buy a product presented in an unattractive way. Disney France is simply marketing in a way that will appeal to the most people in the country it's being sold in. In some respects it's a good thing, as it obviously results in superior presentation of products. On the other side of the coin, it's also created a much more superficial society as far as a person's looks go.

Of course, I would applaud Disney North America if they decided to use France's cover art. However, unless the average consumer here decides he/she has to find the presentation of a product visually appealing in order to purchase it, I very much doubt the mediocre covers we get will ever change. Disney knows the people buying the majority of their titles are either indiscriminating children or their equally indiscriminating parents.

I like those French covers too... especially Brother Bear and Pocahontas.
But I have to admit that I like the US covers of most of the Disney Movies very much, too, but that's probably because most of our German ones look a little cheap... well, I don't like them a lot.
