What other Disney movies are going to be musicals?

Post by Lady »

They already have the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and the Aladdin musicals. Does anyone know of any other projects they have in development or are considering? The more recent animated releases don't seem to be that song-heavy and/or profitable enough.

I hope they make the Little Mermaid into a musical. That had wonderful music.

I consider Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, and Hunchback musicals. Even if the characters didn't sing as much as in the 3 you mentioned, music still played an important part in the story.

I'm confused.

Are you asking what movies will next be broadway shows or Disney theme park stage shows?

I know the next broadway show planned will be The Little Mermaid. It is currently in development.

Yeah, that person's asking about broadway musicals. Right now Disney's working on broadway versions of The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, and Mary Poppins. From what I hear, The Little Mermaid is going smoothly with the exception of one problem-the underwater effects. They're apparantly having trouble doing that effect on stage without making it look cheesy. Julie Taymor (the woman responsible for The Lion King on Broadway) is in charge of Pinocchio, so expect a very artsy rendition of that film. As for Mary Poppins, I've heard absolutely nothing on this except for the fact that they plan to do it.

So then is the Broadway version possibly the same as the rumoured remake starring Queen Latifa?

I'm pretty sure it isn't. From what I hear, the remake with Latifah will be an actual film, not a show.

The Mary Poppins show is a collaberation between Disney (who own the stage rights to the movie's songs) and Cameron Mackintosh (producer of Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, and Cats, who owns the stage rights to the original P.L. Travers books.) As of the last I heard they're trying to get it on the fast track for a 2004-2005 debut to coincide with and capatalize on the 40th annversary of the movie.

As previously mentioned, they've got The Little Mermaid in devolepment and Julie Taymor is doing Pinocchio. I also heard, somewhere, that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a possibility, and that they might work to transfer Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular from California Adventure to Broadway. Tarzan is also reportedly being devoleped.

On the opposing end, DreamWorks is playing copycat again. Coming soon: Shrek The Musical and Catch Me If You Can The Musical.
