Has anyone ever seen the uncut "Make Mine Music"?

Post by Wonderlicious »

Make Mine Music may just be the only animated classic that I have never seen the majority of (I saw the Peter and the Wolf and Willie the Operatic Whale segments on rented video as a kid, which I loved). The film also got four out of five stars in the UK Radio Times film guide, whilst the other package films (save for Melody Time, which got a mediocre two star rating) got three stars out of five. Therefore, I have an interest in the movie and it's on my movie wish list, yet I am aware that it has been subject to possibly some of the most stupid censorship ever in animation with a whole seven minutes of footage removed for being "too violent".

I understand that it came out unedited on rental video in the UK twenty years ago (I have been on E-Bay looking for it, actually), I hear that it was shown uncut on Vault Disney in America a few years ago and I'm sure some random networks have shown it across the world at one point or another so I was wondering if you've seen the film with The Martins and the Coys included. If so, where did you see it? What were your thoughts on it and of its snipping out in the 2000 Gold Collection DVD release?

Although I can't judge the film properly, I personally find the editing a bit pointless, for the following reasons:

1. Kids have been subject to cartoon violence from an early age. How many of us saw Looney Tunes, Donald Duck shorts and Tom and Jerry classics as young ones? And are we all axe murderers or cocky pests? I think not...

2. The kids who are supposedly being cleansed of pain may not be watching this kind of film. I think a five year old girl would rather watch Cinderella or The Little Mermaid to a musical anthology.

That's my $0.02. :D

Well I have seen and own Make Mine Music on VHS. I have the VHs that Disney so kindly released unedited before they got so prudish. ;) It wasn't jsut a rental, it was released in shops too.

I have to say, the scene is quite a funny one. perahps not the best in MMM, but certainly not the worst. In fact it has been a while since i last watched, so my mind is at a blank as to what happens in the section, perahps it's time for a revisit.

Anyway, I completely agree with your points Wondy. Somehow Disney are afraid the gun wielding cartoon characters are a bad influence on kids, yet they have no problems with the bullets that fly in Pocahontas or The Incredibles? And compared to Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam blasting Daffy Duck to bits in virtually every cartoon they star in, the MMM scene is light on violence.

It's nonsense if you ask me. and I hopes it gets an uncut DVD release soon.

I have and I do it frecuently

HBO show this movie very often, and uncensured at least here

I really wonder why the censored the movie, because even when they have a lot of guns, shots and all its part of the US history isn`t?

I was lucky enough to tape it some ten years ago. The version shown was uncut. I've also got the Japanese laserdisc.

There is a lot of gun-fighting and dying and even some drinking in the MatC segment, but everything in good humour, of course.

As a "Disney historian" I totally despise the practice of editing out such material.

This is how I saw it (now I'm showing my age!) back in the early to mid 80s here in the UK. Betamax rental videos from the local store (before VHS killed it). Saw most of the 1940s output this way, the "non feature" film productions such as Saludos Amigos and so on.

Looking back I consider myself lucky to have done so because as you say, finding the films in unedited format, or actually released can be a pain in the arse. Indeed, there's only 4 Disney animated films I haven't gotten around to seeing yet and they are all 1990 and later...

I own the first edition of "Make Mine Music" on VHS, and the particular piece we are discussing is there. Then I also checked the re-issue of the VHS tape that came out in the late 80's early 90's and the clip has been clipped.

A friend of mine has the Japanese Laser Disc and so I made a DVD-R copy of Make Mine Music from that.

I don't understand what Disney is trying to prove by making these 'small' edits. Just leave it alone. We are all aware that this is "just a cartoon".

I own the Japanese LD and have made a DVD-R copy of it with nice menus and a chapter stop for every short.

It's a keeper until Disney legitimately releases the film uncut.

I recorded Make Mine Music off of Vault Disney back in 1997 or 98 and it included the Martin and the Coys. I'm really sick of Disney caving in to the PC police.
It all started with a mouse.

Same as I did too, but ended up on DVD-R. "Make Mine Music" was a great movie featuring "Peter and the Wolf", "Martin & the Coys", "All the Cats Joined In", "After You've Gone", "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing At the Met" and some others. Excellent film from beginning to end.
