Permanent Vacation thread/forum suggestion

Post by Loomis »

After posting my holiday report, I had the idea that the thread might become an all in one Disney holiday report/planning/query thread.

The Semi-Official Disney Vacation Thread

Naturally, Loomis is not the most influential of people around here, so the thread failed dismally in that goal :)

However, since then I noticed that at least two new threads on Disney holidays have gone up:

Disneyland vs Disneyworld

Disneyworld - First week in January

Given that the idea of my thread was to have one convenient place for people to ask questions about their upcoming holidays, or simply talk about their plans/previous trips (i.e. learning from the collective wisdom of the site), I would like to humbly suggest that either a sticky thread be placed in Off Topic - as I think there is enough interest to at least warrant this much - or experiment further by opening a whole Disney Vacation forum. Let us not forget that there are now 11 Disney parks around the world, in addition to the cruises!

Also, by virtue of the fact that this is my 4000th post, I think legally someone has to comply with it...

Won't that fact make it difficult to cover all aspects of the park vacation in a single thread? You'd think that the cardboard slipcover (of which there are primarily two types) needn't merit more than one thread, but you know how that needs to be policed. I've considered making a separate Disney Parks forum in the past and as the site continues to grow, I'm leaning towards doing that (and potentially a Disney Music forum as well) in the near-future. But I think as it is, having just one thread for all Disney vacation issues might make it tough to keep things focused enough and assure that new queries posed to the thread don't get lost in the shuffle. Any other thoughts or opinions on the matter?

Which goes to my alternate suggestion, a sub forum within the confines of the board.

However, there may not be enough interest to justify that (but we thought the same about the international thread at first too).

I definitely think the Parks forum is a great concept - and in fact, a UD Forum overhaul in general would be a good idea; what with the increased traffic these days, and a bazillion threads jammed into one all-compassing board (i.e. Off-Topic), I think the creation of a few more topic-specific forums would do wonders for browsing and discussion here.

Prolly would be a good idea to get it up before Christmas - this place becomes a total zoo at that time. Gotta be planned carefully, though! :P *pulls out hard hat and blueprints*

Give me a chance to discuss the Disney parks, and I'll bite. (Loomis, I know I prompted you to do your thread and then never replied... I shall- I just haven't been able to spend a lot of time on the boards this week).

There are primarily three kinds of things that I see going in a Disney Parks discussion forum: vacation planning advice, theme park news & rumors, and discussion of the theme parks in general. (There would be/are polls & games too, but I would think those would stay in that forum, just like polls on Disney DVDs do now). WDW-based boards have separate forums for each of those three kinds of discussion, but I think we'd be able to confine them all to one General Disney Theme Parks forum, and there would therefore be plenty to keep that forum active. There's certainly enough to discuss (and I agree that it actually is too much for just one thread). Even if you were to take all the Disney parks threads we've had in the past and move them to a forum, it would probably be a fairly large collection.

I hadn't thought of a Disney music forum before, but that's pretty cool too, especially for new releases and the like, now that UD is involved with that aspect too.

But what happens when there is a DVD about the music of the theme parks? :P

 Then'll we'll start a thread in GD about the DVD, and a thread in the Music Forum about what we think of the music?

OR, we could have some kind of mirror thingy, so that the thread appears in both forums, and no matter which one we reply in, it'll be seen in both!

OR, we'll get so mixed up in the different forums that navigating around The Lion King's DVD would seem like a piece of cake!

Anyways, I'm all for a Parks forum, simply because whenever I think of Off-Topic here, I generally associate it as "Anything Non-Disney", and since Parks are Disney, they should probably get a forum of their own.

I'll second a parks forum. Trust me, my non-polls and games post count will multiply in a hurry! :D

Anybody else think this thread was about Aerosmith at first?

Ok, I didn't really think that, but it could be.

For those of you who don't know, Permanent Vacation is an Aerosmith album/song/lyric, which is fitting, as they also have a WDW attraction.

I'm up for a Disney Theme Park forum! It almost feels I like I belong at Mice Age or the theme parks discussions more than I belong at UD because even though I love Disney movies a collect several of them on DVD, I'm actually more interested in the Disney theme parks more than anything else at Disney! So it's kinda a shame alot of people here haven't been to Disneyland, Walt Disney World or any Disney theme park for that matter, because I usually love talking about rides and attractions!

As for a Disney music thread, ehhh, no thanks. That would be over kill IMO!

I am all for the Disney Parks forum. I am reluctant to agree to a Disney Music, though, because I don't see an awful lot of threads about Disney music. Maybe that's just me, though.

Well, the people have spoken!

A vacation forum it is. :)

As Aaron pointed out, it will take the form of vacation planning advice, theme park news & rumors, and discussion of the theme parks in general, but there is probably no need to sub-divide the forum as other boards seem to. I think one Disney Vacation Forum will be sufficient.

I imagine that it will become quite a popular topic, and definitely justify its own existence.

Ooh. Now I'm excited for you! I can relive my holiday vicariously through you :D

And if we had a separate forum, Tony could start a whole thread in it, dedicated to his excitement.

Hee hee, yes Loomis, I could start my own....

Only 3 more sleeps now.. It was soooo hard working yesterday knowing that DISNEYLAND is only a few days away... I just wish I could press a button like on "Google Earth" and instantly transport myself there.. Oh well, at least our Qantas flight is only 12.5 hours from Brisbane to Los Angeles and they have the all important seat back T.V's !

I don't know what I'm excited about the most, but am looking forward to the parades, fireworks and of course the first "snowfall" of the season on November 11 on Main Street after the fireworks. My Daughter is sure to love 'Santa's Reindeer round-up" in the former Big Thunder BBQ area at the back of the park. No doubt I will love it too ! :) We are also booked to go the Blue Bayou next Monday. That is were I proposed to my Wife, back on Halloween 1992.

:D :D :D Thanks, Luke! I'm so glad to be able to discuss parks stuff more in-depth with the UD community now as opposed to other places!
