The Lion King got off to a modest new start in the home video market Tuesday, selling more than 2 million combined DVD and VHS units during its first day in release, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While that doesn't set any sales records, most video industry observers expect the number to grow significantly throughout the fourth quarter. Executives at Buena Vista Home Entertainment declined comment on Day 1 sales or initial shipment numbers, but video buyers at several national retail chains said they were more focused on long-term sales of the animated title, which remains the top-selling home video title of all time. "Lion King is a different animal when it comes to home video," one national video buyer said. "We didn't expect to have massive sales right on street date, but we do expect that it will have long legs on the shelf." National retail chains are expected to use the rereleased Lion King in loss-leader marketing campaigns designed to pull in parents shopping for clothing and other goods for the entire family, meaning that Disney is likely to command prime shelf space at such major retailers as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Toys "R" Us and grocery store chains throughout the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday gift-purchasing seasons. The original Lion King video sold about 32 million VHS units.
