Treasures Series - - Too late to Collect?

Post by jamminjake245 »

Hello, I have been intrested in starting a collection of Disney Treasure Series (W/ the tin!) If I do I want all of them - - from wave 1. Is it still too late to do that and where might I go?
Wants Muppet Babies on DVD!!
Hopefully if Duckales and Rescue Rangers sell well we will get it!! Don't forget Gummi Bears!

I would see Amazon.com to see which ones they still have in stock. Otherwise just start with the fifth releases. They are great to have but probably the first wave of DVD's probably too expensive.

Finding the first few waves WITH TINS will probably be DIFFICULT and EXPENSIVE. The main two sources that I would check would be Amazon's Marketplace sellers and Ebay. For both sources, you need to be careful and check the seller's feedback to cut down on the risk of being cheated.

Personally, if I had to start collecting the Treasures series now, I would first order the Wave 5 from Amazon. I would then buy what sets Amazon still offers from the previous waves from Amazon itself. I would then do a search of the various "regular" business websites (Best Buy, Circuit City, Barnes and Noble, other video websites...) to compare what is available and at what cost. I would then compare those costs against Amazon Marketplace offers. Ebay (and similar auction websites) would be my last choice, but probably necessary for the sets with tins.

However, it would be easier for me, because I wouldn't need the tins - I would just look for the sets without tins, which should still be relatively decently priced - considering you are talking about out-of-release DVD items.

The best of luck if you do decide to start now collecting the Treasures with tins, especially the first 3 waves!!!

I've bought two older treasures (Silly Symphonies and Behind the Scenes) off ebay- seller was redford-films. He's amazing and the last time I checked he had 100% feedback and a score of like 10,000 or something.

He does sell Treasures in the tin but the two I got didn't have the tin (came from those multipacks sold by DMC, costco, & the like). I didn't have much money to spend and I know the tin is "collectible" but I really was just interested in the material on the discs.

I don't think he has many treasures up now, but has sold tons in the past.

Maybe he'll put some more up to sell soon.

And if you're looking for a lightsabre- he sells tons of those too

I agree that your best bets are ebay and amazon marketplace. Goodluck!

I too came kinda late to the table with collecting the Treasures - I started with Wave 3 (the On The Front Lines set really caught my attention). I then bought what ones where still available at the online stores and went to eBay for the rest. The most expensive ones for me where Mickey Mouse In Living Color Vol. 1 and The Complete Goofy set - but when I totalled how much I'd paid for the whole series and worked out the average cost I was happy with what I'd paid!

Did you actually want every single one? whatever way you go, count on spending a few hundred for wave 1. and a little less for wave 2. The Costco set, if you can find it ,IMO might be a better bet if money is at all an issue. ( they are just 'tins' after all.)
If you are a Disney Movie Club member, you can find some of the last couple of waves reasonably priced- wave 3 is 89.95$ wave 4 is 75.90$
This is if you're already a member....

It would have been more practical and cheaper to get them all from the start, of course. Now you will have to pay quite a bit for some of them. But if you can get some of them much cheaper without the tins, I'd say the tins are not really important, compared to the importance of what's inside these sets.

But I must say I wonder why the first MM set is so expensive. There were made 150000 copies of the R1 edition with the tin. Most of the others are about as "rare", except the Frontlines set.

My tips on doing the Treasures

1. I would find a code online somewhere to hack your DVD player to make it multi-region. You may be thinking "what is he on about", but you may be interested in knowing that in the UK, the Treasure sets are more widely available (although the UK has a limited sampling). Yes, you can buy Silly Symphonies and Mickey Mouse in Living Colour Volume 1 at amazing prices (aprox only around $10 on Amazon!).

2. Join the Disney Movie Club (using one of the links at the bottom of the page). As others have mentioned, once you've signed up, you have the chance to get the last two Waves at reasonable prices and securely. I think they may have (though I'm not 100% sure) some of the live action sets from the first two waves.

3. If you can, try and get the Ultimate Treasure Chest (which contains the first two Treasures waves). It often pops up on E-Bay and in the Trade section of the forum. Although no tins appear, I personally don't mind as you're getting OOP material and that is more important, IMO, to glorified cymballs.

I also came to the Treasures collecting a bit late, starting only a few months before Wave 4 was released. Of course at that point there wasn't much trouble still finding Wave 3 in stores (in fact, combining the stock of assorted stores around me, there are still 2-3 copies of each Wave 3 title). I was also lucky enough to find all of Wave 2 in stores after looking a bit harder; though I honestly believe I got the last (new & sealed) tins of The Complete Goofy and Mickey Mouse in B&W vol. 1 available in the city as I haven't seen any since. There still seem to be between 4-7 Behind the Scenes around the city, though. Out of the Wave 1 tins, I only wanted two (Mickey Mouse in Living Colour vol. 1 and Silly Symphonies), and purchased them both from Ebay (both sealed, tin versions).

When Wave 4 came out, I bought it in the first week (didn't bother with Mickey Mouse Club, though); and will do the same when Wave 5 is released (though like Wave 1, I'll only be getting 2 of the 4 tins: Donald vol. 2 and Rarities).

I've only just started my treasure collecting about 2 weeks ago now. As Wonderlicious said they are widely available over here in the UK. They are all still on sale right now at £5.99, i think thats about $10/11?

Ahem....I have four remaining tins. They are *gently* used, that is, viewed once and have all of the original packaging and inserts. I could certainly help anyone start their collection and I'm only asking what I paid for them.

Yes, I believe you are right about that. I have been going to Amazon for my waves, and I just started with trying to collect the original tins myself about 2 weeks ago. I have done searches on the internet for them and all but impossible to find any online source (other than the Amazon secondary market sellers) and I have not tried Ebay but if folks here are saying that is a good source, then great. I have decided because of the cost that I cannot afford to get them all. I've written off some of the very early waves except for maybe 1 or 2 releases. I am awaiting "Behind the Scenes at Walt Disney Studios" from one of the Amazon secondary market sellers who claimed to have a tin in perfect condition. Amazon will refund to you if you get taken, so I would consider them for source for these tins.

It's never too late to start collecting. I would go ahead and get the sets from the coming wave that you want, and then check Amazon for availability on last years sets (or check the stores) ... there may be several left in both last years and perhaps the previous wave. Waves I & II will present a problem IF money is no object and IF you cannot wait, but I am of the opinion that all of the Treasures will be re-released somewhere down the road. Good luck - you will not be disappointed with the ones that you do get!

I started late in the game too, I just bought my first two treasures last August. Luckily my Blockbuster still has some treasures from wave three. :)

I have several Treasures for sell on my ebay store. I will also recommend redford films, i've bought from him in the past and was happy with the purchase. His metal tin sets are more expensive then I charge, but it depends on what you want.

I don't have any of the of Wave 4 for sell because you can still get those almost anywhere and Wave 3 - TomorrowLand is really the only one I have trouble finding.

I have a couple from Wave 1 and a couple from Wave 2 for sell. I still have Behind the Scenes that I just had the time to put on the ebay store yet.

I think you still have time to build your collection from the beginning. It may take some time and searching but they are out there.

I think it's too late to collection Wave 1 and 2 since they are so expensive on e-bay. I got my Wave 1 and 2 from the Ultimate Treasure Box Set at Costco like 2 years ago and they are tinless.

I also have Wave 3 and 4 with tins and will get Wave 5 soon from Amazon.

Can someone throw out an estimate what the current total cost would be to accumulate the entire Treasures collection to date, all with tins, and without all tins? I see redford-films sells the Mickey in Color with tin, new, for $399 on Ebay. Ouch. Also wondering what people think the entire collection in tins will be worth 5, 10 and 25 years from now versus without tins? Now that's a tough question - especially considering the chance of re-release in Blu-Ray format (sorry - don't mean to give you Treasure tin collectors an ulcer ;) I suppose the tins will not become worthless if they re-release in blu-ray in 5-10 years since a lot of people like the nostalgia of the old stuff, but it's not vinyl records anymore its all just 0's and 1's.

First off- welcome to UD!

I think the reason redford-films has the Mickey... vol 1 for $399 is because it's such a low number (#54 out of 150,000). They usually don't go for that much, and he usually doesn't sell them for that much. At this point in the game, if you want them for the value of what is on the discs, then get the ones w/o tins (and no, they don't take up all that much space as you asked in your other post- they are just easier to see on the shelves and not as tall if you don't have the tin). He has a great deal up right now- the entire wave 1 & 2 box set (no tins) for $200 buy it now: http://cgi.ebay.com/Disney-Treasures-Se ... dZViewItem

I'm sorry I can't give you all the detail you want... it'd take forever (and a time machine) to be able to tell what they would be worth in 25 years without the tins

Try checking out completed auctions on ebay. That will give you an idea of how much it would cost to get all of these.

The way I look at it- the data on the disks is more important to me, but collector's value plays a role too. I can't afford to buy Mickey in Living Color vol 1 for $80 but find that it would be worth it to "buy it now" for $45 without the tin. But if I found an incredible deal on the DVD set w/ the tin, then I'd go for that.

Goodluck!
