Ok people, this post was made to discuss EVERYTHING about box sets. Which ones do you have, which ones do you like, which ones you don't.

Everything regarding box sets.

Ok, I'll start with the ones I don't like:

1. X-Men Collection: all the DVDS fall from their holders, because they don't hold them

2. Simpsons 6th Season: I thought that I could get used to it but I don't. I hate that it takes so much time to open it and be extra careful not to break it.

3. The first 3 Seasons of Xena: They range from 7 till 9 DVDS per season, and they each have their own holder. That means that you have to unfold every single season to their max. The same thing like TLOTR EE but twice as much to unfold.

4. Alpha Cases: I hve 2 of these for 2 anime series. Not only do they look hideous, they're also a pain to open when you just want a specific DVD and they take SO MUCH space. Just take in consideration that they carry almost 8 DVDs each.

5. The Nightmare on Elm St. Collection: I actually don't mind much here the cardboard snap case, since they're hold inside a box and each one has a "piece" that forms a Freddy puzzle... but, since they're cardboard they already suffered quite a lot of damage.


The ones I like:

1. Escaflowne Collection: it looks for what I've seen in pictures, like Alien Quadrilogy. It's like a book. Each DVD holder is transparent and look/almost feel like the pages from a book.

2. Thin DVD cases: The ones used in Charmed. They're elgant, practical and "cute".

I don't like:

Keepcases - I hate when companies use this to release TV shows, it takes up too much space.

I like:
Thincases - For example: Bewitched: S1, The Nanny: S1. Those sets were perfect, they only took up the space of a keepcase, yet they were able to hold 3-4 discs.

Digipaks - For example: The Golden Girls and Home Improvement, see thincases.

I pretty much like all my box sets. Yes even the digipacks!

Edit: Actually my Pink Panther digipack annoys me! My "Pink Panther Strikes Again" keeps slipping!

My X-Men Collection digipak holds the discs fine. Hmm...

Anyway, I HATE the case for the Dune 3-Disc edition. It looks cool when you first see it, but then Discs 2 and 3 always seem to fall out!

I love snappers, don't know why. And digipaks are always cool, even if you have to open the entire thing.

Keepcases are big and bulky, I prefer the thinner ones now.

The two-disc thincases are the best. The only ones I have of that is Doogie Howser Season 2.

I hate the new case for Star Trek: Nemesis (2-disc edition). It's like a digipak with the two overlaying discs, but I'm always afraid I'm gonna crack the disc.

I love the Star Trek I-VI boxset, simply because it's better art than the 10 movie collection.

Desperate Housewives has a unique type of boxset. Clear slipcover over a digipak.

The standard movie collection boxsets I have are Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, and Audrey Hepburn. I love it when boxsets come with a disc exclusive only to that set (well, just the Greta Garbo collection so far for me). I wanna get the Alien Quadrilogy simply because of Disc 9 (with the trailers, sweet.)

The coolest boxset I've seen was for Sliders Season 1 and 2, you know, with those floating discs...

Yes, I'm with you guys that say that hate when studios just put their DVDS in a box and that's it. Not because of that, there are some exampke that they're cool, like LOTR, but one thing is that it looks cool and other that it takes so much space.


Can someone please post pictures, if you have from The Matrix Collection and Alien Quadrilogy.

I have to say that digiSTACKS are the best types of boxset holder, failing that, the Amarays in a box.

I love the look at aesthetic qualities of a well-made digi-pack, but after multiple viewings and openings - as is the case with a TV series such as the original X-Files releases - the cardboard (and in those cases the slipcovers) - tend to wear our dramatically.

The recent Star Trek releases seem to have it right, and the R2/R4 have been doing it since DS9. They have a thick stylized plastic outer casing, which is guaranteed to look good on your shelf for the life of the DVD format. Inside you have a digistack with 6 or 7 discs. Very little wear and tear involved.

That said, I'm a sucker for a box set that has no practical use whatsoever but looks really cool.

I have liked the move to thincases on most of Paramount/Universal's titles, simply because they take less room on a shelf.

The worst of all the box sets that is Seinfeld.

I have the first two sets and they just feel cheaply made.

The best boxset, of course, will be the Doctor Who "TARDIS" set (which also has 14 hours of supplements!)

Although the TARDIS looks a little squat. It must have been distorted in the Time Vortex at some point.

Failing that the best box set I own is:
The UK Alien Quadrilogy - with a Digistack system of 'pages'


And

Battle of the Planets Megaset! 12 Discs Baby!

(I also have all 5 of the Australian Battle of the Planets 3 disc sets)

From a content point of view I also have a soft spot for the classic and new Captain Scarlets - the first of which comes with a disc exclusive to the boxset. The X-Files sets have a lot of time and effort put into them (and I actually like the latter seasons so there). No one can fault the Loony Tunes sets either.

Sadly, there are too many boxsets that don't go the extra mile. The Brady Bunch sets are noticable for their animated covers, but supplements are slight on the 1st season, and missing on the others. M*A*S*H is the same. Good sets, no supplements. (I'm hoping for a big blow out of specials for the final season).

Lord Of The Rings 1: Its my 4th favorite movie and its great to see all that stuff that wasnt in theaters.. but i wont buy the extended editions of 2 and 3 because they would be to long for me.

Simpsons Season 3: idk why but this is my favorite simpson saeson

South Park The Complete Sixth Season: Not the best season(sesaon 2 is my favorite) but this is deffinatley the funniest one

I have to say that I have a slight fondness for the Hulk boxset:



and one of the pride and joys of my collection is the R4/Australian exclusive tin set of Astro Boy - The Complete 1980s series:



That lid is one of the sturdiest you'll get on a tin set. The same company are releasing a silver tin next month for the 1960s series!

I don't know if you'd call it a box set, but I hate my Full House Box set. In order to get out discs 2 or 4 I have to take out disc 1 or 3 get the other disc out then put the first disc back. Pain in the butt.

We have several box sets.

The ones that fold out...(are those the digipaks?)...are the ones that annoy me the most. Of that type we have Friends, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel. I hate having to unfold them to get to the disc I want.

I like the ones that are like a book...the Smallville sets are the only ones we have like that.

My favorite are the sets that come in separate disc cases like Reba, Charmed, and That '70s Show. The discs are easy to get to and they don't take up quite as much space.

I only have one where the discs overlap one another and that is Lois and Clark. It doesn't really bother me but then we haven't watched it yet. The case for the set is thinner than some of the others though.

That's all of the sets we have besides Star Wars and Superman. I do have House and Las Vegas ordered but they haven't arrived yet.

Thats why I first bought the standard edition DVD of LOTR first, and then going to save up for the extended editions. That way, I can watch the shorter version on the regular DVd, and then watch all those countless hours of bonus features on the EE

My goodness, I'm the same way. I'm such a sucker for cool or imaginative packaging. My most extravagant box set packaging would have to be plexi-glass Schindler's List box. The thing is huge and just sits on a shelf where no one sees it, but it looked so cool I couldn't not buy it.

Also, if somethings includes a book or reproductions of old press materials that usually gets me too. Like the platinum colector's boxes, the Spiderman
ones and the Warner Gone with the Wind, Ben-Hur and Wizard of Oz sets.

Those Hulk and Astorboy boxes look super cool to me, I don't think we have those region 1 though. The Hulk one reminded me of the Battlestar Galactica set. That packaging made me wish I liked the show.

Doesn't the 'shorter' version come on the extended editions also?

No, the EE's only come with the extended movie, and 2 discs of bonus features (and someone correct me, but all the bonus features on the EE's are completely different from the 2-discers). So if you're a big LOTR fanatic and want all the features and both versions of the movie, you'll have to get the 2-disc sets AND the 4-disc sets.

I love those extras too. I wasn't even expecting them with To Kill A Mockingbird (I never read the specs for the 2-disc, I just knew I was gonna upgrade it), so when I picked it up at Wal-Mart and saw it was thicker than The Sting and The Deer Hunter, I was like, "Whoa, what else did they include?"

I have a bunch of DVD box sets and I like most of them.

I'm not a fan of keepcases anymore... they aren't that special now and I always get annoyed by the plastic getting little scratches. It happens to all DVDs but it still annoys me.

I like keepcases and I don't mind you have to do a lot of folding but I prefer the use of keepcases on sets with 2 (Moulin Rouge) to 4 discs (The Simpsons).

I kind of like the book design that Smallville and The OC uses but Smallville's third season cheaped out a bit there and it feels cheaper much like The Simpsons season six set. If done right this is my favourite way to package TV shows on DVD with 5 or more discs.

Slimpaks or the thin packs or whatever you want to call them are okay but I haven't 'fallen in love' with them. Some do not seem to hold discs that well if you keep using the disc and popping it off and on but it sure beats a boxset with all regular sized keepcases! One little annoyance I have with slimpaks are when the cover art is the same on all cases. I don't think this is overly common though... some try to be different.

I'm not a fan of saving space most times. I don't like flipper discs with no disc art because those kind of discs seem to have lots of problems, no disc art of course and tend to damage easier.
I'm also not a fan of sets like 'Full House' that double-up and overlap discs but that's less of a problem for me since it is better than going the way of the flipper.

The ultimate annoyance though is season sets that change the design of the package or cover art design between releases. Some examples are Alias which I believe went from keepcases to thin packs, Law & Order which changed the design a bit and of course The Simpsons. (do I need to explain)

Those are the best sets and like I have said many times I would love my favourite movies to have the ultimate collector's sets with everything from old and new bonus features, reproductions and (yeah I have said it a million times) a soundtrack. ET's ultimate set is one of my favourites because of all the stuff it includes. I just wish it had a card inside (much like Disney's Treasures) that featured the original movie poster with maybe some facts on the other side like it's opening weekend info, domestic and worldwide box office numbers, a quick outline of the plot perhaps and anything else.

The Spider-man sets are amazing as well with the comics included and more. I just wish they were more consistant packages.

I love the new Batman Begins set too (the deluxe version) and how it included the comics in there too. It's great how they released a barebones set and deluxe set on the same day! If only Fox would learn from Warner Bros. and even Disney (collector's sets).
I kind of wish the Batman Begins deluxe edition came out in a digipak though but it works.

So anyways my favourite gift set so far still is ET but others have been great. I must say that the newest release of The Wizard of Oz looks super-amazing. (I hope more movies are reated that way!)
