Atlantis CE- great, loved it, found CE at reasonable price
Brother Bear- loved it
Bug's Life- pretty good
Dave- haven't watched yet, got for $3 at walmart
Dinosaur- better than expected
Elf- haven't watched yet, got for less than $4 at gamestop
Emperor's New Groove CE- loved it, wanted CE before went OOP
Fire in the Sky- ok movie, bf insisted on the buy at gamestop
Fun & Fancy Free- animated classic, not bad
Home on the Range- disappointed but necessary as animated classic
The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit- haven't watched yet, $6 at walmart
The Moonspinners- also $6 walmart buy, IMPRESSED with how much I enjoyed this as a blind buy
The Incredibles- definitely disappointed but bought used for cheap
Mulan- loved
Murder at 1600- haven't watched yet, another $3 walmart buy
Treasure Planet- liked a LOT, gamestop purchase
Vertical Limit- bf insisted, horrible movie, at least it was cheap!

I've never been really disappointed in a blind buy because usually if it wasn't that great I didn't spend too much on it anyway :)

Numerous Blind Buys

Post by creid »

I really guilty of numerous blind buy movies and the total would reach over a hundred if you include all the Warners box sets I purchase where I have only seen 2 of the 5 movies. (With the Astaire/Rogers DVD set, I saw Swing Time & Top Hat but not the other three movies.) Then on top of that I have blind bought noir PD copies which probably do not count because I paid $1-2 per movie. Here are my favorite and not-so-favorite true blind buys:

Best: In July 2004, I just reading about noir movies, and I decided to purchase the Warners Noir Set Volume 1. It was pre-order $35 for five films, Out Of The Past, Murder My Sweet, Gun Crazy, The Set-Up and The Asphalt Jungle. I never saw any of these movies so I fretted over the decision to buy. I researched each movie and found all five movies got imbd user scores over 7.5 and Out Of The Past got an 8.0. All I can say I loved watching these movies with the commentaries and have turned into a noir freak. It was my favorite DVD purchase of all time because it so fun to blind buy movies you end up loving like Out Of The Past.

Worst: Death Sport is "sequel" to Death Race 2000, my favorite exploitation film of the 1970's. The sequel had Roger Corman producing and David Carradine starring again and this movie had Claudia Jennings (The Pamela Anderson of the 1970's) in it. I fretted over this buy on the Amazon marketplace because I could purchase a copy for under $3.00 before shipping. However, the imdb had a score of 3.9 and even the positive reviews are about how bad the filmmaking was. But I bought it from caiman who was none too happy to ship to me immediately. However the movie was really that bad and a 3.9 rating is kind. There is endless motorcycle scenes with random explosions all the time. David appears to drugged out most of the movie and the only person who seems to care is Claudia.

Lesson: Trust imbd as a good source if you would like a movie or not.

I know I've done the "blind buy" on about five DVD's, but the only ones I can think of right now are The Triplets of Belleville and Sleepy Hollow. So far I haven't been disappointed in my blind buys... luckily.

Alexander (still havn't watched it)
How is Steamboy? I got Akira as a blind buy, because you can't be an animation lover without seeing the "must" titles such as this one. I respect it, but don't love it. Is Steamboy much of an improvement? I like the lead's character design...

Anyway, I blind buy most of the used DVDs I get from video stories. The three most recent would be: Mystic River, I Heart Huckabees, and Punch-Drunk Love. I never have any complaints because I only buy movies that I've seen or that have gotten really good reviews or if they interest me. :)

The animation is Steamboy is very very good. However the story is lacking in a few areas, although it is not bad. I havn't watched it since it came out, so I really cannot remember tons of much more. However it is much less violent than Akira.
Best Movies of 2009:

3. The Hurt Locker

LOL, same here. My mom has essentially banned me from buying DVDs (at least with her knowledge of me buying them so I have to be discreet), and whenever they feel like watching a movie, they go to Al-Buster's aka My Room.
