OK, so I caved and got the Gift Set, all I can say, is that Aladdin and the Little Mermaid better have gift sets, cause I got this one, hoping to have the whole gift set collection, but if it is the only one then I don't think it will have been worth it, but it is certainly nice to look at! I really only had to pay $15, my mom gave me the $20 to cover the rest, so that's cool, I only payed what I would have payed for just the movie at Circut City.
Anyway wondering who else caved or who already got it.

I just bought the Platinum Edition from the Toys R Us deal today. Got Sleeping Beauty with it.
Amazon is like the only place I'd consider buying the Gift Set from at this point, since it's about $30 shipped from them after Share the Love. I still kinda want the Gift Set...might have to live without it though. Would it have killed one store to place a decent discount on this? Thing is it's the packaging that intrigues me most of all - if there was just an Art of Lion King book (which there is), I don't see myself paying $20 for that and some drawings...but maybe I will. After all, it's my favorrrrrrite Disney movie.

I used to sell computer books and software titles into Mass Market accounts (Fry's, Office Depot, Office Max, BJ's Wholesale Clubs and worked closely with the reps that called on Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. I can say with confidence that Disney probably issued a strong warning on pricing of the Gif Set during launch week.Luke wrote: Would it have killed one store to place a decent discount on this?
Think about this scenario:
WDS offers Best Buy a rebate program that would enable them to price the Gift Set down to $20 this week. Meanwhile Wal-Mart, which orders 20,000 more units of that product knows nothing about this and is blind-sided on release day. Guess who is going to be very pissed??
This stuff happens all the time and on MAJOR releases you will not only see publishers hold back on rebate dollars, they will actually tell the stores that they cannot go below a certain price that first week. If they do they risk WDS closing off the replenishment lines.
Really you all have no idea what goes into getting product on the shelves ... and believe me, not only do you not want to know, a lot of it would shock the hell out of you. I'll say this much, as a result of my dealings with buyers at two major Mass Market accounts I have not set foot in their stores since I left that position.

i figured something like that would be the case a while back and prepared myself to pay upwards of $40 for it. and especially after seeing the ads in our sunday paper of how inexpensive the regular 2 disc set was selling at places, i figured there would not be as nice a discount on the box set. anyway, i prepared to pay as much as i did, and i went out and bought it first thing this morning on the way to work. we just got done watching the movie alone. will watch the extras tomorrow afternoon

I agree, and that's why I didn't buy the gift set. Maybe the book is nice, but I don't need the sketches.....The free lithographs from The Disney Store are beautiful! Well I haven't opened it yet, ok now is the moment of truth, do I stick by my decision to own the gift set, and open it, or do I wait till tomarrow, and return it. I'm torn straight dowen the middle! First it feels like every fiber of my being is saying "you don't need it" but the other half is saying, "you payed what you would have for the movie, who cares how much extra it cost your mom" I mean I have just a tiny voice saying, it looks good, even if you don't need it. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I'm weak, I'm just going to open it now, even if I regret it later on....

And...it's just about official that I'm NOT getting the Gift Set now that Amazon has raised the price to 25% off. Oh well, I would have liked to own it. Indianajdp is probably right, that it's instruction from Disney that's making this a non-deal. I'd rather have a 3rd disc with some real extras than the other things, anyway.

Well, now that I have opened it, I am glad that I got the gift set. I don't think the pics on the internet, really did this justice, the book seemes to be of very good quality, and the drawings are GREAT! I love the smell of them. They look like they are sketched right there, on the paper you holg in your hand, one of the best ones is of the adult Simba, and it is pencil, and penciled in (with a brown color pencil) and you can smell the pencil on the paper! Others are done in ink. They each reflect the styling of the artist, I would say even if the book isn't worth it, cuase the info and story can be found on the DVD, it's definately nice to look at or flip through, and the drawings are absolutely great!
I guess if you haven't bought it yet, and you don't think the extra money is worth it, then don't get it, but if you have it now, or it is on order, and you are waiting for it, I think that you won't be dissappionted, atleast I hope not.
The DVD is another story but that will be discussed in one of the other threads, specific to that, at another time...

The book in the gift set is a huge disappointment. Half is simply promoting the DVD (Which you've already bought!) while the second half is a children's storybook.
Also, I don't think the pictures in the book are that great. But the overall packaging and presentation of the book are great.
But it is nothing like the excellent Snow White book that was given away FREE with the UK 2 disc Snow White. That was an excellent book which really got into the making of the film.

I'm sorta glad to hear the book in the gift set wasn't anything spectacular. I was all for the gift set leading up to this week but with no real deals I just couldn't justify it...especially with all of the great movies coming out right now! I mean I was trying to get a second unopened set of Treasures for my collection and ended up selling off the ones I had acquired to finance all of the DVD's I plan to get!

Ultimately, I'm glad I'm passing on the Gift Set. I was as happy about is announcement as anyone, and I was even singing praises after the questionably high $49.99 SRP...but then was when I was thinking it'd be just $15-$20 more than the regular DVD....and it's more like $25 more than the regular DVD. And of course, while it'd look nice, it wouldn't make the DVD any less fluffy.
