Buying Sleeping Beauty DVD Legit

Post by aristocrat2005 »

Hi guys,

Sleeping Beauty is one of my all-time Disney favs and one that I really want to have on DVD. I did not manage to get my hands on it during the 2003, but lately I've been checking online on various sites, like amazon.com's used/new section and ebay. I have been hearing all these warnings about bootleg DVD's and Asian pirated copies. Has anyone had successful in obtaining the US Release from 2003 (New or like new condition) at a reasonable price?

Are there are any plans to re-release it in the future (a definite date?)

P.S. Thanks to the webmaster for updating about the revised Disney release schedule...can not wait to get my hands on the Little Mermaid in 2006 instead of 2008!

I don't think there is a definitive release date yet. I personally bought my copy (make that, sealed PERFECT copy  ) from DisneyGuy in the Trade forum for a pretty good price. I know that you can find them on Amazon Marketplace or Ebay but you're right- you need to be very careful about ordering from these people. You can also sometimes find a good price on the Amazon marketplace (as we all know, Alan recently found the Fantasia Anthology for $35, when MSRP was $69.99  ) you just have to know what to look for.

I bought Peter Pan off ebay (it's probably my fav movie after Alice in Wonderland and I JUST COULDN'T live without it until the next release 8) ) I got an ok price but it was legit - the picture even showed that it was sealed. (although sometimes people can use the same photo for multiple dvds or steal them from others, so watch out for that)

Here is the bootleg thread where a lot of people give tips on identifying bootlegs and how to avoid buying them.
http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... 21&start=0

It's quite long a long thread so these are a few things that might help:

- AVOID if it says 1 disc edition or only comes with 1 disc (SB was 2 disc)
- AVOID if it says it doesn't come with the case (comes with sleeve)
- AVOID if it comes from an Asian country
- AVOID if you look at the feedback and the user has a history of unhappy customers or if they accuse them of bootlegging
- AVOID if you look at the feedback and the seller is selling like 20 copies (or has in their history) of the same DVD. You'll see this a lot with Little Mermaid dvds.
- if the auction (on ebay that is) ends in the middle of a weekday or in the middle of the night they will often go for a lower price. Evening is the prime time people are checking/bidding and I know a lot of workplaces ban certain sites (ie ebay- my mom has this problem)
- email the seller and directly ask them "is this a bootleg?" Bootleggers won't answer

Those are just a few things, I know there have to be more but I can't think of any right now. If you have no qualms about buying a good condition used DVD, check out www.gamestop.com to see if a store near you has them in stock. I've found some good copies at those stores (and some not so good ones as well). Go to the website, type in the name of the DVD, then on the page put in your zipcode to check for places near you. Go into the store and check it out to see if it's in the condition that you'd be satisfied with.

That's all I've got for now. Goodluck on the search!!!! :D

I tour the Pawn Shops here in Wichita and have come up with a lot of gems by just being patient. I found a two-disc "Sleeping Beauty", minus the slipcover, for $6.50. Then in one Pawn Shop I found someone's collection of Disney that they had pawned and then let go, and they were selling the whole thing as a set - not individually - for $175. There were 40 titles including some live action and animated movies and I wish I had the money at that time. Some other lucky person got that stuff by the time I returned with cash in hand.

Most importantly it is good to be cautious about your purchases. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I really like being able to physically look at the product and handle it before buying. There are lots of dishonest people out there that try to push off 'seconds' as the original. Once again, buyer beware.

Try rental shops like Hollywood video and Blockbuster first. Thats where I found my copies of B&tB and Snow White brand new. One of them even had 3 copies of pinocchio, Hollywood video is the best place to find OOP DVD's because no one thinks to buy movies there.

Yeah. Try those places first. I found Beauty and the Beast brand new. Had to pay a bit more than I wanted to. I've even found some gold edition DVDs at Blockbuster. They weren't movies I wanted however.
Dragon, not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing.

There was never a fantasia trilogy because only two fantasia films have been made. I think you mean't fantasia anthology.
