Well, this has its roots quite deep in history - at least compared to the sort of time spans we're dealing with in our age of technology...
It has to do with the fact that the AC output has 60 Hz in America and 50 Hz in Europe.
Yeah, I knew they were different, but you'd think with all the new technology developing, we could just make one standard and stop all this NTSC/PAL encoding/decoding stuff. I guess if it were that simple it would've happened already.

I definately agree with what most posters here have said. The decision-making process of BVHE North America has become completely unintelligible. Some recenty decisions which I'm both resentful of and baffled by:
1. Continuously pushing back the already ambiguous Region 1 release date for the 2-disc Lilo & Stitch SE.
2. Releasing a single-disc Tarzan SE in Region 1 while a port of the original (and highly sought-after) 2-disc CE was released in most other parts of the world.
3. Releasing a single-disc The Emperor's New Groove SE despite the fact both single and 2-disc editions of the movie already exist and were in print, at least, until very recently. Why not just lower the inflated price of the existing 2-disc CE and start advertising that; would should be more cost-effective than creating an entirely new disc.
