Morning Report
I went to watch the new song first. Its not bad at all, the animation was fine too. Was it needed? No. But does it detract? No, just a different way to see the movie. My only complaint is that there is a very slight pause, I assume due to the seemless branching, right after the scene. It seems that the pause isn't as bad in the theatrical version. Final conclusion, it is okay but was needed to sell more copies.

Hi I'm new here. Dont know if this was mentioned here yet. Here is a link to some pics that show redone anim for the DVD compared to the LD. WHat you think?

Welcome to the forum. Those shots were posted in another thread. What's the point of reanimating something like that?
It really bothers me that they couldn't give us the original theatrical cut, and yet they're advertising the fact that they are. What a load of crap. As I've said before, none of the changes alone bothers me significantly...but it's the 'why?' aspect...and the fact that they're done throughout that does.
Why couldn't they just leave the blue castle opening logo alone?

Amen to that! I've got 2 VHS copies of it and i'm not parting from neither even thought one has a line accross the bottom and the other is in perfect condition! But BVHE is going to hear from me tomorrow!catNC wrote:it kinda makes me glad i'm still holding on to my old "crappy" vhs tapes...that way i know i'll at least have something closer to the original
I'm just looking at the 'helpful' table in the back of the Lion King booklet - the one that looks like a train timetable where it says which supplements can be found where.
What the hell were Disney thinking? It's needlessly complicated - multiple menus, repeated supplements etc. What is the point. Especially when there are the predefined 'Journeys' and the main 'index' menu.
Can anyone explain what the continents are actually for on the second DVD? Do they serve a purpose or are they designed to confuse people?

I think they were overzealously trying to make the DVD "experiential" (laughable word, BTW). They describe it as "you can take a chartered journey, or explore the continents on your own" or something of the like. I enjoy the different menus on BATB and SW (like the different sections of the kingdom or castle). But I agree - Disney went too far on this one.2099net wrote:I'm just looking at the 'helpful' table in the back of the Lion King booklet - the one that looks like a train timetable where it says which supplements can be found where.

Initial Impressions of the second disc.
(1) The Continents system totally sucks! Just how frustrating is it to find what you want? Plus, there's no over all index page like there is on the first disc, even though the 2nd disc has way more supplements? Excuse me, is any one at Disney DVD at home with the lights on?
(2) Where's the storyboard galleries? Where's the background galleries? Where's the concept art galleries? Where's the galleries apart from the character design ones (which incidently seem pretty weak)?
We get International CD covers in a gallery but none of the beautiful backgrounds? And to add insult to injury, none of the missing galleries are represented in the 'companion' book. Hello Disney, was this DVD assembled on auto-pilot?
(3) Virtual Safari. I can live with this but... not sure how I feel about a 1.5 version (and presumably a 2 one as well) on future releases. Also, this should have been placed on the first disc and the 2nd disc should of had the first disc's deleted scenes in the film section.
(4) Publicity. Very strange. As far as I can see we not only have no trailers, but no posters or advertising at all for the original release. All we get is posters from the IMAX release and Internation CD soundtrack covers - something I've been desperate too see for years.
(5) Out of everything I've looked at so far (only a small fraction I must admit) the Disney and Animals featurette is the most interesting - it could of (and should of) been longer.
Overall, this is Disney's most disappointing release to date. Not because it's the worst disc Disney has ever produced, but it promised so much and delivers so little. If it took them 2 years to assemble this release, I think some people must have been asleep for 18 months.

The extras that are there on the disc have been trimmed down as well. Like the part with Elton John talking about how they originally gave "Can you feel the love tonight?" to Pumbaa to sing. On the LD, his interview on that ran on a bit longer and it was funny! They then had Thomas Schumacher acknowledging that Elton was indeed correct. Its too bad they trimmed them all down. All in all, its still a nice set. I guess one day when I get a DVD recorder, I'll have to transfer the real extras over to DVD.

OK - I've found the background art gallaries etc now.
Seems like the only way you can get to them is America > Glendale > Art Galleries.
For some reason they're not included in the "film" journey
There's a treasure trove of content here (but it's still disappointing compared to Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Atlantis etc) and they've hidden it 2 menus down with no other links to it? The damn CD covers and IMAX posters are on every damn continent.
The whole thing's a mess.
If the DVD producers feel the need to give away a free "bus timetable" just so you can locate the contents of the disc, you know you're in touble. Why they couldn't just produce an index menu like on other Disney releases is beyond me.

I'm about to look at the other galleries now. From the few Character gallaries I've looked at we get Scar's voice introducing us to the character and concept ideas on the initial introduction screen, but no voices on the actual pics. A good thing is the character designers and animators are credited in this voice over.
The gallaries are not virtual 'animated' either but presented like those on the Treasure Planet disc. You just skip through. There are no thumbnails.
While I approve of the lack of animation, the other all presentation is very weak for what are usually my favorite features of the multi-disc sets. Another step backwards for Disney DVD

Hello, it's me again. Last post on the topic for a while (and it will be as I'm going to bed. I'm not so addicted I've started sleep-posting. Not yet anyway).
Because I may come across too negative (I have been accused so in the past) I just thought I'd add the Stage Journey segment on the second disc is good. Very, very, very good. So there. It's not all doom and gloom from 2099net. Night night everyone!
